    One of my close friends had a giant collection of typewriters. He even knew how to repair them. Sadly he passed away in 2018. He was 19. Every time I use mine, I think about him and his family.

    One my of my favorite machines. It’s not as robust as some of the larger portables but that click is just so darn satisfying. I also love the snappy action. The carriage on these were always finicky, but it also added to the charm.

    My dad told me his father used to have one of these for working (this exact model), and he was very fast at typing. Now I don’t know who keeps that typewriter nowadays (probably one of my cousins), but I really would like to find it, I don’t care if I already have a Lettera 35 just for me 😄. As for my grandad, he died several years before I was born so I never had the chance to meet him.

    My life has changed after seeing this video... I have now become an Olivetti Lettera 22 hunter. I have 2 and am picking up another today. I've been learning to fix them up and fantasize about being an Olivetti Lettera Repair Specialist. I've got the bug! I have one that locks after I type past the last margin, so the carriage won't move unless I press the carriage release or margin release button. I'm pretty sure it's a silent return/loose dog issue. They are all so different, it's fascinating.

    I use to have an Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter. It was my first keyboard. I used it to typewrite some of homework papers in high school. Unfortunately, it was stolen years later in 1978 from my apartment while I was at work. I miss that typewriter very much.

    • @dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121
      @dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121  8 лет назад +64

      Because of the quality. This typewriter was designed by Marcello Nizzoli, and Olivetti manufactured top-notch machines, while the Olivetti Tropical (which I assume is one of the typewriters you mean) was not actually manufactured by Olivetti, but only used the name, on a more economical typewriter made in Brazil. Compared to the clunky feeling of a re-brand, typing on a typewriter like this really makes you enjoy a feel of high-quality machine.

    Hi my Olivetti Lettera 22 has a skipping issue. This happens only when I'm typing very fast, when I'm typing slowing and not forcefully but pronouncedly the skipping doesn't happen at all. I don't want to immediately assume it's an issue with the machine because it could be an issue with me. I am fairly new to typing and this is my first machine, so it could be because I am importing my typing style on the computer keyboard to the typewriter.
    Another thing is that Olivettis have personal touch adjustment. You can adjust the softness of the touch from 1 to 4. Is it because I'm not being able to align myself with the touch adjustment that the skipping happens? I am asking all this before I take it to the repair store (who will definitely say that it is a problem with the machine).

    • @JenniferAnneCourt
      @JenniferAnneCourt 4 года назад

      I was recently watching another video that might cover this issue. I think it might be the escapement mechanism? The video was Joe Van Cleave's youtube video: TWVS Episode 5 - Shopping for Typewriters. I'm not sure how easy it is to fix on your own but it sounds like just cleaning and oiling. I'm looking into getting an Olivett Lettera 22 and can't stop watching videos about them. Such fascinating machines!

    • @Yanomer3d
      @Yanomer3d 3 года назад +2

      This issue is maybe caused of not oiling the carriage, or probably the function where you can adjust the typing force, setting it to the lowest option will make the keys double press causing it to skip

    • @Ryowazza99
      @Ryowazza99 7 лет назад +2

      I have a Lettera 32 and I don't understand how can you type so easily and fast with all fingers, it looks like you are pressing very slightly. With my lettera 32 I have to press pretty hard and I can't be that fast cause I mostly use the forefinger in order to type clearly. On the computer instead I am really fast.
      I'm thinking to switch to a lettera 22 but it's hard to find a clean one, even if I live in Italy.

    • @dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121

      These machines use Olivetti specific spools that require a locking nut that hold them in place on the advance carrier. Check to make sure those are snug as the carrier will slip without those in place. Make sure the ribbon-reverse is operable

    • @peterdiertens
      @peterdiertens 5 лет назад

      @@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 That's some of the idiosyncrasies of a typewriter. Using the L for a 1. I've had my history with typewriters, in the early eighties I studied journalism. Started off with a full electronic typewriters, that could only print on thermal paper, basically 9 dot matrix. I changed that terrible contraption for a Brother electric typewriter, essentially the same as this mechanism, but with a motor that made the arms hit the paper. The whining motor drove me crazy, so in the end I changed that one for a full mechanical desk writer that was certainly not portable. (Blikman&Sartonrius) A behemoth of a machine, that because of its height had great lever qualities. That's what I used to finish my study. It was all computers from then on. Except for a in between job I took, had to take a typing test. Got up to 180+ characters per minute and got a typing job (with just 4 fingers, mind you - the reporter way of typing) But just this weekend, I gave my son one of the last Olivetti models, the ET 55, a great electronic typewriter. www.moma.org/collection/works/3641 I found this great studie on typewriters, typefaces and Olivetti in particular: www.olivettiani.org/wp-content/uploads/TypeOlivetti_MariaRamos.pdf
