Draining coolant... A technique I have used since my early apprentice days... Using a 2m piece of flexible rubber fuel tubing remove the top radiator bung, insert rubber hose until it reaches the bottom of the radiator. Induce siphoning out the coolant (I use my mouth for quick suction... Maybe use your syringe for safety reasons) as the coolant flows neatly without a single spillage remove the top thermostat bung and the coolant header tank cap and sit back and wait. Most models will drain down everything, 300tdi you will be left with a small amount in the engine block. But man is it a whole lot less bother and hassle than any other method. Salvage everything!

Problem with the 300 is the pump is high and keeps coolant in the block higher than than than bottom of the rad

I had the tensor stud break on my disco. What a pain to sort out. Luckily, I didn't have to walk too far to a hardware store and buy some threaded rod. It was a pity I didn't have a left hand drill bit. At least I was mobile again.

Some northern bloke, not sure what his name was, gave a really good tip on how to get the bolts out of those pulleys. He suggested using a small stilsons to hold the pulley while undoing the bolts. I’m sure if you do a search on RUclips you should be able to find it 😂

Why is the Expansion tank on LR black , a clear tank like in any normal
car could save many 300tdi engines .So you can see the coolant without
    opening the bottle.
I think there are a coolant level sensor add on , but I don't see the
corresponding warning light on dash in defender , perhaps a RR
    phenomena..

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 года назад

The tank is a high pressure tank and was probably made out of the materials available back in the day - later replacement tanks are almost clear

Serious question Mike. How long can you function in the current shutdown? I'm an essential worker in the UK it's weird driving about at the mo, every day is like a Sunday.

Well, I have lots of projects of my own to do - depends on parts supply, but no customers popping in
Being in this biz for so long, I have got so used to bad times I squirrel cash away for the bad times, and pay off all debts straight away
I have no mortgage, and pay my electric, phone and council tax a year in advance
My earning time is in the spring and summer - so you get used to having no work in winter. I never get cabin fever like many do !
I am so lucky to live above the shop, so I have no commute, and the RUclips thing takes a lot of my time up, so not so bad
Now spring is here it gives me opportunity to go through the containers and have a good sort out - bit too cold over winter!
But the town is dead, petrol is so cheap they are almost giving it away - mate said in just outside Toronto it was 60 cents a litre - 34p!
      Keep safe and keep smiling!
      Mike

Hi Mike, did you fill genuine LR antifreeze in? Heinz

No, I use a Canadian made universal premix coolant

@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks again. I checked the link and find, this type of antifreeze is low in silicates, not totally free as the OATs normally are. I read some articles about the proper antifreeze for LR TDi engines - apart from never ending discussions in forums etc. - I kept in mind, that silicates might have a negative effect on the water pump sealing. I could imagine that the abrasive effect of silicates (as mechanical corrosion inhabitor?) might destroy the bearing ( of the water pump) over a period of time.

I'm in the UK as well - Caplugs only seem to exist in North America 🤔 I bought a rubber (test tube) bung off fleaBay size 17mm-20.5mm, that fitted my 300tdi hose a treat.
