My Acura el was overheating about 15 minutes into driving and overflowing the coolant reservoir. I'm in the process of removing the head now. Thanks for the vid, super helpful!

Its amazing what havoc a small warp can cause

How much machining is too much that will pose an issue ..... I had the block surfaced as well they took 5 thousands off

7 years later what would be the price for a resurface

Understand. Most of the problems I've read about are people having problems at idle, but maybe they pushed it beyond that before trying to get it diagnosed with multiple overheats. If it boils over from the overflow in this gen, it's always the HG period. It's unfortunate, but very true. Many people have problems comprehending this issue.

But i did this video because otherwise someone will think its just the head gasket and not check the head , it amazes me how many people will do it that way and then have the problem again , if only they would fix it right the first time , and here the backyard mechanic is showin them how :)

What’s the max you can take off the head

He deff over heated it and had the over flow tank boil over but it never once showed up like that when i was checking it out. I changed the thermostat and took it on the interstate and it finally boiled over. It was a pain to get it to show the problem but once it showed up i knew exactly what was wrong with it. He over heated it a couple times that i know of , he didnt lie he just didnt tell me it would take 15 mins on the interstate before it would do that, around town it was fine

FYI, the head gasket sealing material/better burn characteristics are the problem, not the head deciding to warp on it's own or bad machining from the manufacturer.

tightning sequence plays a big role when it comes to warped head, i always tighten the head bolts of course from inside going outside but in 4 steps: 10, 25, 50, 80 f/lbs and i don't care what people are saying, i had no problems so far

I finally got my head off, same engine D17A2. What I’m concerned about is that looking at your valves I see they are all closed. On mine I have a few that are obviously opened. 1 of them more so then the others. Does this mean It’s bent? My timing belt never broke. I have the engine set at TDC. I’m replacing head gasket and timing belt/h20 pump etc.. I wasn’t planning on having the cost of having my valves redone. Why do you think some of mine are opened up? Thank you

Sounds just like my car. Can drive find around town but if I go out on the interstate for 45min it will overheat and shoot coolant out the reservoir. The head gasket had no cracks in it. No milky dipstick or pummels of white smoke either.

Those d17's will warp a head in a heartbeat and then not overheat until you get on the interstate.

Bullshit! That over heated big time. I have an 02 civic with 92k on it and identified the problem immediately after coming back from a short trip at 86K when I decided to check my oil level. I saw coolant spray on the trans and the overflow was full to the top. It never over heated on my gauge and when I checked for warpage with a straight edge, there was none. Sorry if your customers/friend/whoever lie to you, but the machine shop took a lot of metal off that head to make it level.

If it would have just boiled over at idle it would have made it so much easier for me to diagnose lol This thing was a pain worked perfect no pressure in the Rad , fans worked just right it wasnt until a drive on the interstate so i was now i see lol after that it was straight to tear down and now putting it back together, he did timing and water pump thinking it was that got timing off two teeth , then another shop fixed it all before i got it he was tryin to save some bucks , it cost him more

Should have shown the people how to use the feeler gauge and shop manual specs. on max warp age.
