- While Republican candidates in many states downplay their opposition to abortion, the most vehement wing of the movement, which helped overturn Roe v. Wade - those who advocate prosecuting patients, outlawing contraception, and banning IVF - are increasingly outspoken. Meanwhile, some state legislatures continue to advance new restrictions, like a proposal moving in Louisiana to include abortion medications mifepristone and misoprostol on the list of the most dangerous drugs.
Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Rachel Roubein of The Washington Post, and Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins schools of public health and nursing and Politico Magazine join KFF Health News’ Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more.

I was 19 when roe v wade was handed down. Also, planned parenthood came to my town of about 60,000. Best thing that happened imo. My cousin had a boyfriend she later married all thru jr and sr high school. Her mother took her out of state for 2 abortions which my mother financially helped support. So, when PP came to town, I immediately went to get contraception since by that time I at 19 wanted to have sex with my boyfriend who I ultimately married. I was pragmatic and knew our family doctor would tell my parents. I never had an abortion. However, I became a teacher at a school about 25 miles away from the city I grew up in. One of my students came to me very worried she might be pregnant. After talking with her, I told her to wait a couple of weeks to see. One day she came to me all smiles. So then I had a very serious conversation about her options. Now she had a choice. She could go to PP and get on contraceptives or continue to risk pregnancy. She chose to get on the pill and finished high school, married the young man, had children and lived a good life. We did not have the option of metaprostan.
People are going to do what people do, even if they have to travel 2 states away.
So legalize drugs, murder, anything because people will do what they want to do.

I still think we are approaching this abortion debate all wrong. If we truly want to end abortion, if that is the goal, then instead of going after women, we should be going after men.
A woman can sleep with 100 guys in a year, and only carry one baby to term. However a man can sleep with a 100 women in a year, and potentially make 100 babies.
So, let's start giving vasectomies to prepubescent boys, and once they turn say 25, and are married, then they can have the vasectomy reversed. If any men father a child out of wedlock then we can make it punishable by a felony charge and a $10,000 fine per incident.
I bet we could eliminate abortions altogether almost immediately. Either that or men will stay the hell out of women's reproductive care. Both are acceptable.

Worst part of anti abortion laws - every woman seeking an abortion must make it public knowledge as it is taken to court for deliberation as a legal matter written for prosperity. Enough women have suffered from these absolutist laws that disregards the fact that a miscarriage requires an abortion and fetus with birth defects that will not live a healthy life with much cost towards caregivers are mercy abortions. A medical team perhaps should be paneled for each jurisdiction to determine if human and necessary to protect the mother to keep it outside the court system for financial, privacy, and timely reasons.

@@jonathandevereaux298 also the fetus may be severely defective or handicapped and cannot function and survive on its own without 24/7 caregivers in which case perhaps an abortion is the mercifully option versus life long pain and suffering for parents and child. These two exceptions are the exceptions in addition to rape and incest, which are difficult and painful enough that hiring a lawyer and due process compounds the experience. A heartbeat alone doesn’t make a person. I personally never chose an abortion and would choose life and adoption, but the exceptions are situations I never dealt with but have known friends and relatives who have- making abortion the best and only option in certain cases. You haven’t lived life long enough to understand that yet.

Exactly, let’s murderers alone too! Abortion is seen as murder by a lot of people. We don’t consider the right to murder as a right to be protected. I was young and ignorant when we passed RoeVsWade. I was with the celebratory crowd when I was freshman in high school. Then I found out the fetuses were alive! If other states are passing laws to allow abortions for “at request”, then that is on their consciences! Medical doctors need to refuse to perform abortions unless medically necessary!

I respect everyone’s body. Someone needs to protect and respect the living human within you. I don’t get it. Whatever happened to pregnancy prevention? Why has abortion taken the place of prevention and responsibility? At the risk of sounding cruel, anyone who wants an abortion should have your watch one…first.

That's fine. However, you people keep purposely ignoring the medical emergency reasons for abortion. It seems that some of the legislation in various states banning abortion actually prioritizes the life of the fetus OVER the actual living, Breathing humans we can see and touch and feel compassion for as well. It seems like the baby IS the most Important being here. Do you see that? Have you picked up on that at all? Have you thought about how this whole thing impacts the woman, her partner, and her family? What do you say about those who actually used birth control measures and STILL got pregnant?? I just wonder if your bleeding hearts are thinking anything about these women as much as you're spending time and energy worrying about these babies, manyof which, will be born into abusive, neglectful, or traumatizing homes. Did you ever think about a woman actually having to make this decision for the protection of that baby? Just something to consider if you haven't already.

I'm all for the ACTUAL health of the mother and baby instances, along with grapes. All other instances are uncalled for (responsibility for one's actions should always be taken into consideration, BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO, actions have consequences)

We don't typically consider this murder, we consider this exercise of our human right of bodily autonomy, our ownership of ourselves.
It's the same for a woman and the embryo inside her. It's her right to exercise her right to bodily autonomy to say no to use of her body by another. It doesn't matter if the other is a embryo, a relative, spouse, the president, or a Nobel Prize winning physicist. Nobody has the right to use her body without her consent. Yet only in the case of the embryo do you think of it as murder.
