- In the last quarter of 2018, Apple reported selling close to 47 million iPhones worldwide. But the tech giant is still struggling to make a dent in India, where high import duties and price-sensitive consumers have translated to languid sales.
It's been over a decade since Apple began selling iPhones in India, but the company is still struggling to make a dent in the world's second-largest smartphone market.
According to data from research firm Counterpoint, Samsung and Xiaomi accounted for the majority of smartphone sales in India in the third quarter of 2018, garnering 22 percent and 27 percent of the smartphone market, respectively.
In contrast, Apple made up only about one percent of India's smartphone market share, trailing behind Chinese phone makers Vivo and Oppo.

The issue is, Apple is trying to compete with Xioami and Samsung, both global players....that is just not sustainably possible, as the the pool of buyers is much less. Rather, Apple is becoming like Ferrair (profitable, highly valued), yet not capable of competing with Samsung (Volkswagen) in the long-term, who operates Audi and Porsche as well.

It isn't a 1000 dollar phone when it comes to India, it goes up to like 1400 dollars. It's more than expensive at this point, it's ridiculous.

The value is there - just not for India. iPhone sells incredibly well in other markets that support the premium segment because the ecosystem to support those devices is there. For iPhone in India, there’s no premium ecosystem to support it so the value for iPhone in India goes way down.

I don't see such comments anywhere. I know Apple sells its product as a luxury good and the govt. charges make them go higher but some people are okay with paying with that as we are getting products which are better than the usual. I had an Apple phone in India, it didn't allow me to project to my Android-based TV, Apple maps did not work with my Car (did not work at all actually), and a fair number of useful Indian apps were not available on the App store, not to mention I found stuff like iTunes too gimmicky and counterintuitive compared to just copy pasting what I wanted into the phone.
Needless to say that phone lasted less than 6 months. Moved to a Galaxy S8; its so much better for India.

It's stupid myth that Indians don't want to pay premium for phones. Its blatantly false because Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, etc have no problems selling their high end phones here. They even manufacture them in India because of high demand. Apple wants all the money and doesn't want to put any effort. Thats the problem. Apple has a non existent after sale ecosystem in India, no official Apple stores, many Apple services are not available in India, ones which are available are inferior to Google's or Amazon's offering, prices for iphones are waayyy higher compared to US or EU, Apple is too locked down and too dependent on their Mac and iWatch ecosystem, something which doesn't exist in India.

In a few words, Apple's India marketshare represents how much they would sell in general if people in the rest of the world bought their phone if they actually cared for quality and price
Apple devices have all the quality though the main reason is the price and most of the people rather spend 40k or 50k on a phone
Most of the buyers are US and Canadians. IPhone is the cheapest there with good paying plans
Firstly, apple is way too late in joining the race , India is a android nation now. Secondly, Indian consumers are very informative and educated about the new tech, they care about new camera sensors and processors , they know what price should be charged for the specs of the phone and apple certainly does not appeal to Indian consumers that way
And now android phones with the best specs are geting really cheap too

Apple charges more than US $1500 in India for iPhone XS, still as Tim Cook said, they make progress in India there are people who can afford Apple Products, But I believe the Core customers are Young people and Indians are very keen with their choices, as for as Apple in India, Maps Sucks, Appstore doesnt hold most Indian Banks, Apple pay doesnt work, Siri cant understand Indian Accent, Apple Music dont have a huge collection of Bollywood music, dont have Dual Sim/Micro SD capabilities, I mean these are things we take in granted for a modern smartphone.
Apple doesnt offer that in India, How can it justify its Premium price in India, than in most of the market when they offer great Apple Services and still charges less for an Iphone than in India, where it needs to improve a lot.
Indians are smart to let apple lag behind, If apple doesnt start focusing on India, Indians will be devoted to Android and google services, and Will be too late for Apple to make a Comeback.

I've got 3 uncles who have passed the UPSC exams (one of them lives in Scotland) and all 3 of their families have only Apple products and no android products. The 2 living in India also have a lot of other stuff (One of my uncles living in India has 3 TVs, a driver, goes on international flights on business class with his family and we get to stay in the airport lounge for people who have bought first class tickets whenever we visit him even though we only bought economy class tickets) so it's not really surprising that they have Apple products.
Apple is using the word “premium” too much ..there is nothing premium in an iphone that another phone lacks .

You don't have to make it feel like iPhone to feel the premium/performance tho.
Each brands has pros/cons.
Android devices are universal, and have greatest market share.
However, it's too fragmented so that making apps for it without any complications is miracle.
And they usually have inferior SoCs than iPhones, Quality varying from brands to brands, overall O-O-B experience.
iPhones works great with other Apple devices. However, the closed eco-system might trap you in, unless you'll risk paying a lot to move to the other platform. Rising Apple prices doesn't help that either. You're likely to buy their updated devices one day.

kinda interesting to me because here in the Philippines, they thought people who owns iPhones are rich 😂. Truth is most of the lower class Filipinos who owns iPhones, are usually they got it second hand or they own old model iPhones. My brother gave me an iPhone 5s.It’s already phased out & obsolete but I’m not complaining because it is still usable & working fine but my friends are making fun of me because I own an iPhone 😂. It’s like I bought myself when it’s not. Geez. 😂 .. well let me just say there’s nothing wrong with owning an old model iPhone because the engineering in this phone is genius. When I went to India a couple years ago I tried to buy a case for my iPhone and at the store there was only around four different options for my model. Three of which were different types of clear cases. So I was just gonna go with the other option which had some floral design. But the storekeeper literally told me to choose one of the clear options so I can show off the apple logo lol. I never knew ppl showed off their iPhones. In America almost everyone has an iPhone so it never crossed my mind

The one plus is half the cost and has better features.
