I have spent an unusual amount of time agonizing over the title and thumbnail for this video. I'm not sure I can vocalize exactly why they've been so difficult, but they have. I know I usually write a lot more here, but I'm very hungry and want to catch Pokemon and get a pizza.

I used to not be upset that T&B got cancelled. Then I realized: This got cancelled but 13 Reasons Why got another season, and they had to apologize for the previous seasons being so bad that a notable increase in suicides may have been caused by the show.
It's upsetting that Netflix would rather promote and romanticize suicide than have more seasons of a show that respectfully tackles a myriad of topics.
Netflix is mostly doubling down on dark, edgy, teen shows. 13 reasons fits that to a T.
I think the live action adaptation of death note is the culmination of this dark, edgy, romance drama aesthetic they've been doubling down on for certain shows. Like its trying to echo the vibe of twilight without being as awkward.
I think this is why: any show that gets a lot of press, either because it's good or because it's bad, brings more people to the platform. After the first season, that increase gets smaller and smaller, but those diminishing returns aren't even. After a couple of seasons, a really good show has pretty much reached its potential for Netflix in terms of new subscribers, but a bad show, especially one that's gotten worse or more outrageous over time, will still have people saying "wow, is it really that bad? I've got to check this out!" Netflix only cares about increasing its profits through new subscribers, which means that bad, cheap tv shows that last about three seasons or bad, cheap movies that have a sequel or two are the strongest bet. Emily in Paris will keep getting renewed until people stop making video essays and memes about it.

I’ve heard people propose that Tuca and Bertie was too unpopular to warrant renewal because of its unnecessary crude sexual humor...... but like if that was true Big Mouth would have died quick. Uhh.
Tuca and Bertie was honestly one of the best things I saw this year. The revelation of Bertie's childhood sexual abuse completely lines up with her character, and her struggles, without being the one thing that makes her who she is. It reminds me a bit of Catch 22, how the absurd plot circles and circles this one terrible event in her life without quite being able to bear to look at it. But in the end Bertie talks about what happened and faces the reality of it and takes steps forward.
I'm so happy someone's talking about this show. It's so... Bizarre, but good. Like an ogre, with layers.

I'm glad I saw this before diving into the series. Netflix seems to really get off on killing its best content... *cough*Sense8*cough* I may still check out Tuca and Bertie, but going into it with the knowledge that it's over and done with will certainly help me manage my expectations! Sigh...
This was particularly upsetting because I heard the announcement of Tuca & Bertie months in advance, but netflix did so little marketing for it that I didn't even know it was released until two days before they cancelled it. (And I'm a woman who watches adult cartoons so this should've been all over my "new releases" feed.
I'm a huge fan of bojack horseman and I was sooo disappointed with the show. Of course I didn't expect it to be the same and was open minded.
But the first episode was so incredibly cringy and not funny it felt like watching Amy Schumer. After the first 7 minutes or so I skipped through the rest of the episode hoping it would tone down but it didn't. I was shocked with how incredibly bad it was and never wasted one more thought on it until I saw this video

Thank you so much for covering Tuca & Bertie! I fell in love with it instantly and was devastated when it got canceled in such an untimely way. It was the best show that came out this year and it's one of the only shows that I've seen gracefully address not just sex and boundaries but mental health and generational trauma. I think you summed it up perfectly: compromises are difficult, but worth it.
Bojack Horseman adressed mental health better then any other recent show...6years ago when it started.

I believe while Bojack covers a wide range of issues societal mental and personal the way T&B (as a show and characters) handles and even displays how they manifest in a person and in society are different.

That is why you should have non-verbal signs that something isn't okay alongside safeword, like a certain gesture, clicking tongue, snapping fingers, especially for when the scene requires the sub to have their mouth covered.
That's something I think is really well covered in Jenny Trout's The Boss series. Sometimes the sub is lost in sub headspace to the extent that she is unable to safe word, so her Dom makes sure to keep checking in and safe word when he is uncomfortable carrying on.

As someone who gets frustrated By sex scenes in Media. I was fine with what was going on in Tuca and Bertie, Mostly because it was buried into the narrative and did seem like a progression. A lot of the time those scenes just seem dropped in there for no purpose and at times completely at odds with whats going on.
From just the clips you played here I've fallen instantly in love with this show's aesthetic. If only Netflix advertised this show AT ALL. From what I saw of it I thought it was just Diet Bojack

After being together w someone for 5 years and them breaking their depression for the first time, we're having to discover the hard way that i have needs ive become accustomed to fulfilling with them thru my own effort & without their (or my) knowing it's happening or how important it is, that i now can't bc of their newfound health & independence, it's been a struggle having to learn my boundaries and needs the hard way now that they're better

I really like that they show Speckle being the one to use the safewords. A lot of folks aren't really aware that it's okay for the dominant one to use it.
Bertie and speckles relationship gave me a lot more confidence to sort out my own. I can’t really describe how good it is to have a show explore the same problems you’re going through, pat you on the back and let you know it’s ok to experience them, point out how your problems affect others and encourage you to fix yourself and your relationships. This show was so much more than I expected, it was really special.
Seeing the Patreon draft version of this was so surreal because you brought up points with zero context since the clips weren't there. Now it makes considerably more sense.

As someone who finds it difficult to get interpersonal relationships, the fact that everyone has issues trying to determine their own boundaries, as well as others, is nice to know. I guess I never understood that the messy, exhausting chaos of understanding where the lines are is necessary and common, so I ended up avoiding it entirely.
Just do whatever people ask of me because I have no clue what my limits are, and I pray I never have to find out where others are because that would require crossing them. That also stopped me from really talking to people past pleasantries and necessities, often.
But you're right; we can't make it alone. No-one really can. So it's time to start wading into the cold muddy water; because there's definitely treasure at the bottom.

How far did you go? It made me really uncomfortable and not impressed at first so I skipped it but then when u was dead bored i pushed thtiugh that out of curiosity, and maybe around episode 4 or 5 the show really started doing it for me.
I sometimes feel prudish, a lot of these newer Netflix animated series place an inordinate amount of emphasis on sex and sexuality, and I'm just not comfortable with that.
@@10z20 thats absolutely okay, no need to feel invalid for that. I think there is a lot of value in it as an unexplored part of art though. This kind of art can help people understand themselves in real life, snd media has had a huge blindspot for sexuality until recently.

@@steinistein8611 Have you watched the show? One of the things I was most impressed by their use of nudity. When it comes to breasts they aren't just sexy, they're also funny, sometimes they're an expression of freedom, and other times they're a burden or a vulnerability. Instead of treating them just as an object for lust, they're explored as a human experience; in a way that's both meaningful and playful.
Far and away the most criminally underrated show on Netflix and I'm STILL mad about it
I honestly don't get sex scenes in shows/movies; they just make me uncomfortable. This one described actually sounds like it contributed to the overall narrative / characterization, though. Like, in a way where actually showing the sex scene is necessary and not gratuitous.
Neutral Narwhal I would say there’s probably a few reasons for that, one could just be having come from a more sex-negative society/upbringing, but it can also be mixed with a healthy dose of mainstream media’s pretty wack ideas about women. A lot of sex scenes out there seem to only exist to show us a naked woman for sex appeal to a male gaze and usually it’s a very “conventionally attractive” person. Nothing is wrong with being pretty but it can really alienate us average folks from it feeling like a human experience and connecting.
I think there are movies and shows and games etc that get stuff right and make sex feel like a more intimate narrative storytelling device, but it’s usually in stuff that’s not got as much “blockbuster” mainstream appeal. If you feel like exploring more things like that, I think kink and queer spaces have a lot of interesting media that portrays sex really differently.

Ackthrice agreed. However, because I, as an American in the US, I consider my peers quite culturally diverse. There are people who over share their sex life, people who don’t have one at all by choice, people who like keeping it private and other variations.
For me, sex is something I would find awkward because it felt like I was expected to be a prude by others, when in reality I simply enjoyed it. And felt constantly shamed for liking it.

the more and more I think about tuca and bertie, the more genius I recognize behind the writing and just all its brilliant, nuanced decisions. as a born and raised woman, I've never once seen a show that felt like it was specifically written by women like tuca and bertie. it really speaks to my unique experiences and perspectives that I rarely see depicted, the s2 episode vibe check being one of the best fucking things ive seen in a LONG time. ive never seen sexual assault trauma portrayed more perfectly than in bertie. it's not a flawless show, but goddam it says a LOT and it says it so fucking well. to see female sexuality portrayed so relatably, it means a lot to me.

You ever hear something and realize that you're gonna be using that as a descriptor or argument for the rest of your life in a tonof different ways that will interlace into huge amounts of lifelong points you present to others? "We can't know our boundaries until we hit them" just became one of those things, and I'm glad I became so aware of it while watching this video.

Spoilers for Season 2
They do it again in S2 of Tuca and Bertie. Bertie gets dirty dreams of Pastry Pete. She feels ashamed, but talks about it with her therapist and eventually Speckle. She and Speckle discuss about their “forbidden” crushes and engage in sex with Speckle doing hair pulling (like Pete did), exciting Bertie. He asks if this is ok and continues after her consent.
It is once again showing the budding healthy relationship they have.

I'm just watching this video for the first time after leaving a long-term relationship for very similar reasons to Bertie and Speckle. I didn't even know this show existed, but something about your analysis really affected me. There really isn't enough media portrayal of amicable breakups that come about, not through abuse or drama, but through simple divergence of need. Anyway, thanks for the video
Adult Swim has quietly become responsible for the sound, look, feel, and sentiment of modern counterculture. It's an incubator of talents like Flying Lotus and Tyler the Creator, Eric Andre and Hanibal Buress, and now, Dan Harmon and Lisa Hanawalt. I'm hoping adult swim continues to do so with an eye for risky, weird, and mindful content.
There's something so deliciously ironic about a show looking like a children's picture book while being one of the most intimate & detailed examinations of modern adulthood.
So happy it's getting a second season. It's incredibly well written and visually unique.

A really great movie that similarly uses scenes of intimacy (and explicit sex scenes) to explore themes, character, plot, aesthetic, and tone (among other aspects) is the 2017 film "The Handmaiden", directed by Park Chan-Wook. Different scenes involving intimacy and/or sex throughout the film are used to explore the themes of personal freedom, power dynamics, societal oppression, love, lust, grief, separation, connection, story-telling, duplicity, metatextualism, symbolism, abuse, and more.

I never even considered this a sex scene, there was too much story building for it to be just a sex scene. More often than not a sex scene is just there for filling while the actual story building happens before and after the actual scene, not during. Tuca & Bertie is an amazing show, I love it so much.
I found this after watching Curio’s video, and this did not disappoint. I love Tuca and Bertie, I’ve watched it 3 times. It’s comforting but also educational. Thank for making this video, I learned more about my favorite TV show in such a genuine and meaningful way.

Speckles is a fucking treasure
The importance of such an analysis for inspiring screenwriters/directors/creators is so big. It helps to more clearly define what constitutes a good narrative and how one might be able to actually explore an idea inside the context of the story, independently of the visual style. It's so important in this age in which almost anyone has access to the means of producing good-looking content (which is awesome), but not necessarily a good, compelling story, bc that depends on abilities and experiences.

I haven't seen it since, but every single time I've thought about it I've realized I like it a little more, and now it's one of my favorite things on Netflix. If this ever gets a second season I'm going to be so fucking happy. Barring that, if they make another show like this or Bojack that'll make me equally happy.

I checked the show out because of this video, and MAN now I'm sad it was cancelled so fast. I have bad anxiety, and I've never seen a show that understands it so well as Tuca and Bertie.

Nuanced and thoughtful, but with a hopeful and generally positive bent. I really appreciate how you manage to be critical, not letting media off the hook for it's miss-steps, but without being judgmental. Your analysis of 50 Shades was a much-needed one and this follow-up (though also great as a stand-alone) enhances it even more.

Thank you for this. When I saw this pop up I realised I needed to Actually watch Birdie and Tuca. It's such a great show and I'm really glad I did. They handle pretty much every issue like this, tenderly and with humor. It really helps when most adult issues are portrayed as extremely serious struggles for which their only two answers. The perfect one and the absolute worst one. It's always more complicated and it comes down to communicating with your loved ones throughout the issue.

One can always hope that they will pick up Tuca and Bertie again in a few years. With Netflix shows, it seems like they have a model that allows shows to skip a year if they don't have the resources to pick it up immediately and to continue it on later. Tuca and Bertie might be that, but people have to watch it, it has to have an ongoing following, or it will not be made.

that bit about running into invisible boundaries sucked shit for me emotionally. i mean, you did an excellent job, but wow that was just a whole lot of hurt in me i didn’t know was there. i don’t know that i can honestly say thank you yet, as i’m still in the “things suck” part, but i can thank you for making me recognize all that stuff buried deep in me. i can’t build a better future for myself if i don’t know the material i’ve been working with.
