I'm surprised that there was no mention of the Sovereign Base Areas, which are actually British territory. They are also the only British territory where the Euro is the legal currency.
Quick note on 4:53, the junta didn't support "EOKA" but rather created a new paramilitary organisation named "EOKA B". The first EOKA was disbanded in 1959.
EOKA B was a continuation of EOKA with almost all of the leadership of EOKA, leading EOKA B ! Up until today there are far right groups in Cyprus in support of EOKA B and their sick dream of Enosis and ethnic cleansing.
You forgot to mention that the US (president at the time) and NATO, actually encouraged the Turkish invasion of 1974, in part due to concerns that the UK would've given up on its military bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. That would have left Cyprus more exposed to the USSR's sphere of influence. Also despite how the ethnic groups of Cyprus separated after the unofficial division, the Republic of Cyprus, "on the south", where the Greek Cypriots where displaced to, is still the same country founded in 1960 (that was supposed to represent both communities). These events left a lot of Cypriots, not only the Greek Cypriots, sceptical and sometimes resentful against NATO, across the political spectrum. A full NATO member launched a full scale invasion against a much, much weaker opponent, twice.
1974 British army had a large excercise on Cyprus when the Greeks paratroopers landed on the island and British forces were taken back to Britain leaving United Nations NATO soldiers behind.
FACT CORRECTION: Even after the Ottomans arrived the majority of the island still spoke greek. The concept of "Greek Cypriot" and "Turkish Cypriot" didn't exist until the British came (Divide and conquer). The main divide was along religious lines (Tax played a big role in many conversions to Islam and also the reason the Cypriot Church is so rich) but many could speak both languages and there were mixed Christian and Muslim villages. Even when the island became a republic the "Greek Cypriots" made up 80% of the population and "Turkish Cypriots" 18% (2% other). In the beginning of the video (1:40) you emphasise that the island "WAS" majority Greek speaking - At any point in time this is factually incorrect. Side note: The Cypriot language does have the characteristics that it could be considered its own language and not just a Greek dialect. The language incorporates a lot of ancient Greek, Italian, and Turkish/Arabic words. But for political reasons I don't think anyone would ever seek to try get Cypriot recognised as it's own language.
Heh, reminds of Maltese language that is basically latinized Arabic. That island also had a history of culture overlaps, but they are pretty united now as one people.
What? I'm Cypriot and I don't think I speak a different language from the Greek mainlanders...nor that our vocabulary is such extremely different from other regions of Greece. Pontic Greek, Cretan Greek, Ionian Island Greek etc are all dialectical different as Cypriot Greek. Even more so, Cypriots participated in all straggles of the Greek people, beginning with the Greek war of Independence. So, I don't want to thinking that you made this comment out of some agenda but you misinformed people trying to pursue a narrative that Cyprus was something "different"...more fluid and more exotic than the rest of the Greek speaking areas when it was actually a very ordinary Greek speaking land with its own specific characteristics. I feel kinda insulted by your comment.
@@vanmars5718 I know. Most people don't realise it, but technically it has the characteristics that would allow it to be classified as its own language. A good example of a language that seems almost indistinguishable from its "parent" language is Scots, which is considered its own language. Cypriot has more deviations from dialects like the Cretan's. Examples "ornitha" is an ancient Greek remnant and "kanjelo" is an Italian word. The Cypriot language has a LOT of these amalgamations that go unnoticed. I'm sorry you feel insulted by the comments but I didn't make up the technicalities of what differences are needed for a "dialect" to be considered its own language... You're not alone in your thinking and your comments are the perfect illustration why I said even though it technically could be classified as its own language, politically it will never happen.
@@paris-panda What is considered dialect and what a language is a very thin line that always makes linguistics disagree. More importantly coming here, in a video that has nothing to do with language but about the Turkish invasion and occupation as a reason for us not join NATO and you feel that most important thing to let people known is that somehow the rest of the world should tell Cypriots that actually aren't really speak Greek but something else is EXTREMELY provocative holding a lot of agenda. Are u serious dude? You do that to us? Like what? We are Greeks like it or not... And when you have a state being invaded and separated by a power with an imperialistic ideology, is truly out of place and insensitive to try to pursue whatever tried to pursue. Do u understand that or you still you'll try to play the fool??? Delete your comment now
The video downplays NATO’s role in the invasion. NATO governments had agreed to the “Acheson Plan” which said Greece would overthrow the Cypriot government and conquer the island (thus becoming NATO territory) and Turkey would be given some parts. This is exactly what happened in 1974, with the NATO-controlled Greek Dictatorship supporting EOKA B’s coup, but because the Cypriot President survived the attack and because the Greek Junta fell the legitimate Cypriot government returned to the southern part. Today, Cypriots blame NATO for the invasion and the vast majority opposes it.
The Greek word for union is "enosis" stressed on the first vowel "e" E-nosis , the final "s" is often silent but not a biggie issue. At 7:10 " during the first world war the country's president" was said in error. Cyprus didn't become independent till 1960, during WW1 it was still a British territory.
@RanStuff British territories did not have presidents, Cyprus like other colonies had a British appointed Governor. The comment was in reference to the obvious error by the creator of the program.
@PwP well, Makarios III shown on photo is actually the first CY president but he was 1 year old when WW1 has started :) He might say something by the end, probably
Cyprus can't join due to the Greek-Turkish conflict on the island. Greece and Turkey are both NATO members tho, and should anyone from outside attack Cyprus both are highly likely to intervene are they not? Can't imagine them allowing anyone new get involved on the island.
Yes the British have their military here and the island is full of Russians really so many Russians live here that I think soon Cyprus will be very interesting for Russia
Did you forget to mention that it was the Greeks who booted out Turkish Cypriots from parliament in 1961, and hijacked parliament completely disregarding international mechanisms?
Exactly or that the turks pleaded with UK and France to stop greece military dictatorship from decimating turkish Cypriots... Which they ignored OF COURSE TURKEY HAD TO ACT
7:05 "In fact, during the First World War, the country's first president took part in the 1961 founding meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement". World War One happened from 1914 to 1918. The Non-Aligned Movement _was_ founded in 1961, and Cyprus _did_ take part of its founding. Did you mix up World War One with the Cold War?
Turkey will pretend to care like they are doing now, so that the president of Turkey can try to get something to ease the economy back home by getting concessions from NATO.
If the Greeks and Turks agree to a two-state solution on the island, this would pave the way for a membership in NATO for both nations. The Turks and the Greeks should have their own states on the island.
@@JayJay5244, completely wrong. The Turks and the Greeks have proved that they're able to peacefully co-exist on the same island if they both have their own state. This is a de-facto situation on the island since 1974. If this secession achieved to provide peace on the island, why not to recognize it and continue with this peace? Peace is always better than the war and conflict.
Most Turkish Cypriot descend from Islamised Greek Cypriots , Cypriot Latins(Levantines) and Cypriot Maronites. Only a small percentage comes from Ottoman settlers and most spoke Greek for a long time before adopting Turkish, in fact some still do speak Greek Cypriot as their only native language like in the village of Louroudjina.
1:58 the map shown here has been the status quo since 1974, not prior to that. Throughout the Ottoman period and British period, the Turks of the island were scattered all across. According to British government statistics in 1960 81.14% of the island were Greek and 18.86% of the island were Turkish. For the north to become fully Turkish about 200.000 Greeks were forced to leave their homes by the Turkish army, and 6.000 Turks from the south moved to the north.
NATO has been doing the dirty on Cyprus for decades. TLDR Forgot to mention the two holocausts of Greeks and Armenians at the end of the Ottoman Empire. 3 million died.
Declassified CIA documents show maps that Turkey wanted to partion Northern Cyprus as early as the 1940's while still a British colony. What you have to understand moderates from both sides wanted to keep out of politics, Turkish right wingers wanted to be close politically to Ankera and do their bidding for partion and right wings Greek Cypriots wanted to be politically close to Greece to secure it from further occupation and Turkish partition. These two factions from communities were EOKA and TNT. If you read the London Zurich agreement the vice president had to be a Turkish Cypriot and had veto power on all policies and a fixed number of Turkish Cypriots seats in parliament. All of which is undemocratic. If you add in that right wing Turkish Cypriots nationalist were actively working with Ankera in perusing a partion you have inter communal violence.
A Turkish-speaking Cypriot here. I just want to mention something that Turkish-speaking Cypriots do not want trnc or they are not 'enemies' with Greek speaking Cypriots. We want to reunify Cyprus. We want to get rid of Turkey, UK and Greece and live peacefully in our own state, Republic of Cyprus. Turkish-speaking Cypriots have been used as an excuse for bigger powers to do things in Cyprus. I am sorry to say that.
⚪🟠 I can tell you in 4 sentences: Cyprus is divided into ethnically Greek and Turkish parts who don't like each other. Greece and Turkey support their respective ethnic brothers and also don't like each other. Greece and Turkey are both in NATO. Cyprus joining would bring this issue to the forefront. Edit: read the thread before commenting "that's an oversimplification hurrdurr" Yeah no shit it's over half a century of history in 4 sentences, dafuq u expect Sherlock
this is complete bullshit, cyprus is divided into 2 halves, one has greek speaking Cypriots, the other is occupied by Turkey and has turkish speaking Cypriots. the 2 parts don’t dislike each other, a large majority of both communities support reunification and many many people from both communities cross to the other side every day to work, go to school, buy groceries, see their friends etc. While yes greek speaking cypriots do like Greece, the same cannot he said for turkish speaking cypriots where there’s a growing resentment towards Turkey, since they’re actively colonising north cyprus, trying to destroy the turkish cypriot identity and interfering in our democracy. Cyprus is Cypriot, not Greek, not Turkish, and peace in Cyprus will not be prevented
Unlike Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots genuinely supported UN’s unification plan and voted overwhelmingly yes back in 2004. Yet Greek Cypriots were rewarded with EU membership despite of their opposition to unification. International isolation of Turkish Cypriots still continues to this day.
1. EOKA laid arms and disbanded in 1959. The colonels junta took power in 1967. 2. The WW1 has nothing to do with the founding meeting of the non - aligned that happened almost 40 years later. 3. In 1963 the vast majority of the Turkish Cypriots revolted against the Cypriot state and set up their own militias and semi - independent enclaves. 4. Russians started coming in the island of Cyprus after the collapse of the USSR, and not in 1960. But the same applies to Ukrainians as well. 5. Cyprus was forced to move into a service economy having lost 70% of its agricultural lands by the Turkish army and it's richest and most developed city as well. I am afraid your knowledge about Cyprus is quite limited.
Untile the late 1960s the turkish speaking population was less than 16%, the english speaking around 4% and the Cyprian Greek speaking population 80% (!!!). Even during the Ottoman occupation, Greeks were the majority on Cyprus.
As a Cypriot, I found the video a decent quick analysis on the matter. Cudos for that. BUT, man... I 'm not sure if you did it in purpose or your animator was just confused, but at 5:38 and other timestamps, you presented the splitted Cyprus with TRNC's flag, that no one recognizes, ...and most importantly, Greece's flag at the bottom.... Cyprus is NOT Greece's territory! We are independent since 1960 and we have our own flag that you used plenty of times. The appropriate thing is to use that flag to show the south despite that internationally the whole island is acknowledged as the Republic of Cyprus. After 1960, Greece's and Turkey's flags aren't the ones to officially represent Cyprus, Cyprus's flag is - and let's hope one day we will be able to see the flag waving in the north as well.
@@emiryalcn8922 It seems you Turks are still 50 years back lol. Greece doesn't care and hasn't intervened in Cyprus' politics for decades. We've been doing our own thing, they are doing theirs and we respect each other's sovereignty, something Turkey FAILS to do so repeatedly with every neighboring nation. The north of the island is de facto illegally occupied by Turkey, it became its puppet state, or like you call it, its ''backyard'', it acts only through Turkey and does whatever Turkey says. It's disgraceful and a shame.
@@robbielamont It's one nationality yes but with two ethnicities. The language is not the problem, especially since before the Turkish Invasion in 1974 the turkish Cypriots also talked the Cypriot dialect (it's greek with a lot of ancient words, different syntax and some turkish words). The only problem is that Turkey illegally occupies the north part of the country since 1974 and imported a lot of Turkish settlers there to influence the island and change its demographics. What is been asked for decades is for Turkey to stop the illegal occupation of the north and remove its troops so Cyprus can be united again. Greece and Turkey should not have a say in Cyprus' politics.
Well now do not over say ... the greek element and Greece is the largest in the entire "free part" of the island. The language, customs and even the national anthem of Cyprus are Greek. If it was not the island under the occupation of UK it would be entirely a "Greek island". The fact that an independence was "given" for the eyes of the world does not mean that the historical and social relationship that Cyprus has with Greece should be forgotten.
@@Downtimelegion Let's not mix things up. I only made a comment on the fact that Greece's flag shouldn't be used alone to represent the free parts of Cyprus but also Cyprus' flag or just Cyprus' flag since it has been independent since 1960. There are many things that us Cypriots try to do in order to adapt to this new circumstances we live in. Back in the 50s, YES, Cyprus should be part of Greece since it has been a greek speaking island for thousands of years and it was(and still is) mainly consisted by Greeks. Or even as an independent nation, Cyprus should be considered a Greek oriented country with a Turkish minority who could live and cooperate together with the greek Cypriots... that ofcourse if the British, Turkey and the then Greece's junta didn't screw things up. Today though, we need to adapt to the new reality in order to achieve peace. Turkey invaded in 1974 and the whole wide world codemns or should codemn it for it. They've been trying to change the country's demographics by importing more Turks to the island and they influence the north more and more each year, every day. They should be codemned for that as well... but what can Cyprus do? Throw all the Turks to the sea, act violently because Turkey is also violent?...We''ll only get more wars and bloodshed. What is needed to do is finally try putting things behind and being united for once, for peace, and if Turkey is still ignoring these calls, it will only make itself look bad internationally. Cyprus has always been a greek populated island, it's common sense by now. But it's also independent and is seeking for peace and a better future for all its citizens. Also, we kinda got used to being independent...our language might be greek but it uses a different dialect and far more ancient greek words than modern day Greece does that sometimes Greeks really don't understand us. So it makes sense to be on our own without ofcourse forgetting our greek ancestry and roots, that will never happen. Let's agree on one thing though, the Turkish troops need to like...LEAVE..., no idea what the f they want in our nation, Turkey is still trying to get the whole of Cyprus but they won't suceed.
Cyrpus can't join NATO because 1/3 of it s occupied by Turkey and countries with territorial disputes can't join. The reason it s occupied by Turkey is because the British squatters wanted to at least have a base there and true to style they did in Cyprus exactly the same thing they did everywhere else they went or left. Divide and conquer. As long as there's a problem they can play "arbitor", they declared for themselves a base as sovereign territory and the "natives" can squabble all they like. As for NATO it doesn't need Cyrpus to join because the UK already has a base there and the UK is in NATO and that's all the island has to offer them anyway. Things always change so who knows, maybe one day France or the US or God forbid Russia or China will come to "protect" the Pakistani or Indian minorities in Britain which are of similar size to the Turkish minority in Cyprus. 🤣

There are still several British military bases on Cyprus as well (Akrotiri and Dhekelia), they even have their own police. And it's not like all this rather large territories surrounded by fence, you can legally enter there if you would like to (except the bases itself). So the island has 4 types of territories now - Republic of Cyprus, occupied northern territories, UN buffer zone territories, territories of British bases.
3:42 too bad, Turkey didn't originally own that land, the Ottomans (they are no more) and greece did. This is similar to CCP China (the republic of China is in Taiwan) and Taiwan and Russia (the soviet Union is gone) and Ukraine.
Remember the Volt Europa episode 10 months ago? Well the Cyprus branch which is called Neo Kyma/Volt Cyprus (it also announced a candidate for the upcoming 2023 presidential elections) is advocating for NATO membership and has a very pragmatic solution to the partition problem in the form of a Federation but with the twist of the formation of a Federal District.
Cyprus's EU membership is a breach of international law since the founding agreement of the state prohibits Cyprus from joining any international organization of which both Türkiye and Greece are not members.
Guys why are so many of your videos filled with visual glitches and small mistakes like at 3:04 This is so easy to spot, makes me question the quality of the actual info in the vid as well

Cyprus is not officially in NATO but in reality has troops from NATO member states. At the northern half, Turkey has an active military personnel of around 40k soldiers (mainland Turks). On the southern part, Greece has around 1k soldiers (mainland Greeks). Apart from that, there are 2 British military bases in Cyprus which belong to the UK and are therefore not considered Cypriot land due to the Treaty of Establishment in 1960. There are 3.5k active British troops in a 100 sq miles area. Those bases have been and are also used for NATO operations in the Middle East. To conclude, although, the Republic of Cyprus is not officially a member of NATO, there are 3 types of personnel which belong to the alliance.
Completely untrue. For starters the Republic of Cyprus completely funds the small Greek troops there with the intend to protect some zones too from the Turks. The Republic also provides electricity to the bases of Britain and also to the occupying's Turks because Greeks are in enclaves there. All 5 armies in the island including the UN forces and the Cypriot National Guard (the largest by far force on the island) are entirely relied on the republic. If Cyprus stopped feeding the British they would die the next day by starvation.
What would even be the benefit of Cyprus joining NATO if there are protocols in the EU that require military intervention in times of war between an EU member
Because it has no disputed territories. It’s a single country that’s being occupied by Turkey. Every single country on the planet recognizes this except from the occupiers themselves.
Okay get your facts straight it was the United States telling turkey to invade because of Turks wanted the whole island they couldn't take it without the United States support that's why Greece went to defend it okay get your story straight.
Generally fine video… but dude it’s unbelievable that whenever you showed a map of the split island you showed the following: a ‘TRNC’ flag for the occupied parts (UN designated as Turkish occupied parts), and a flag of ‘Greece’ for the internationally recognized ‘Rep. of Cyprus’ which has its own flag. In other words, Showing flag for the unrecognized invasion ridden north but not showing the flag of the recognized republic controlled areas. Unbelievable these Brits!!!

@Madaleine Well it seems there is a problem if after all these comments you still call us "Greeks". I'm a greek speaking Cypriot, the nation has been independent for 60 years now, get over it. And please, enough with the Turkish propaganda, there was no genocide against Turks, you need to know the difference between that and a "massacre". But ofcourse, I don't expect Turks to know the difference after denying the historically proven genocides they did to Armenians, Pontic Greeks and Assyrians. Who's next in your list, the Syrians or the Kurds?
Big mistake. It was not the settlement of Turks during the Ottoman times that made the Turkish population in Cyprus. It is the transformation of Greeks from Christianity to Ilam because of the oppression that the Turks imposed on anyone who was not Muslim during those times. The Turks of Cyprus are the result of oppression of the natives, not of immigration. It was those who did not have the strength and the stamina to hold against the Turkish oppression that made the Turkish Cypriot population. When Turkey sold the island to the British in the 19th century, most of those "Turks" immigrated to Turkey.
To tell the truth never will be resolved between Turkey and Cyprus, simply because Turkey never give back to Cyprus territory that holding occupied. Soon Turkey plans to integrate that part with the rest of Turkey. Cyprus is next to Syria and everyone knows the role of Russia there. The question is nato likes to see the Russian Navy park in Cyprus. For those who know Geostrategic very well, Cyprus is the best location geographically for Nato. My opinion is Nato should make Cyprus NATO members immediately. All other opinions are secondary. And don't forget Turkey threatening war on Cyprus and Greece.
The non-aligned movement is not an issue today. The foreign policy of the island does not depend on the choices of the country's first president. There are many scholars and analysts within Greece and Cyprus raising the question of NATO membership. Basically, only the communist party of Cyprus (AKEL) opposes this idea. As to the connections with Russia, look at the sanctions that Cyprus follows against Russia in the European Union. The ties with Russia cannot block NATO membership, Turkish veto can.

Another factor might be the UK's sovereign base areas. Parts of Cyprus are actually still British territory, with a significant UK military presence. As long as British forces are on Cyprus the island is pretty safe, as any attack on the country would likely result in a response from the UK, a vastly more powerful country.

This video has half truths and several variations about this topic. The Cyprus issue is by no means simple and NATO is largely responsible for what happened and will happen on this island.
Doesn’t Cyprus already have a status within NATO, guaranteeing it protection BECAUSE Greece & Turkey both claim it & have joint ownership, in addition to the U.K. Sovereign Bases which train for & support Brit mil’ on deployments & exercises both in NATO & outside NATO?
No, neither Greece nor Turkey claim it. Turkey militarily occupies the Northern third but considers it an independent Republic. The entire island legally belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, which de fact controls only the Southern part and since 1964 has been run by Greek Cypriots (but it is a legitimate government independent from Greece). The Republic of Cyprus refuses to join NATO because of popular resentment against it due to the invasion, although currently there is one major candidate for President who supports NATO membership.
You didn't mention that according to the united nations and the international court of justice turkey has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity
Cyprus is divided because it was always in Turkeys plan to divide the island and the Greeks stupidly gave them a reason with its plan to unite Greece with Cyprus. US Kissinger approved the invasion and rolled out the red carpet even reassuring Turkey that Greece was in no position to and would not get majorly involved and Turkey entered into Cyprus murdering raping and dividing the island. The greek cypriots barely had any weapons and were even using rocks. The Christian South legitimate part of Cyprus is wealthy , well functioning financial system, freedom of speech and the illegally occupied North of Cyprus is poor and people are arrested for being against policies , this is fact. The government in the North even had major issues trying to pay there electricity bill.

There are two more British military units on the island but outside the SBA.

It's all the British and Turkish and Greece fult they made it a problem

The north of the island is de facto illegally occupied by Turkey, it became its puppet state, or like you call it, its ''backyard'', it acts only through Turkey and does whatever Turkey says. It's disgraceful and a shame.
Im confused, is Cypriot it’s own nationality and Turkish vs Greek Cypriot is just the language barrier?

TLDR: Countries with ongoing territorial disputes cannot join NATO.
This included Ukraine from 2014
Cyrpus can't join NATO because 1/3 of it s occupied by Turkey and countries with territorial disputes can't join. 🤣

The non-aligned movement is not an issue today. The foreign policy of the island does not depend on the choices of the country's first president. There are many scholars and analysts within Greece and Cyprus raising the question of NATO membership. Basically, only the communist party of Cyprus (AKEL) opposes this idea. @@theo3357 Probably added an extra 0. 50 sounds about right.
@@Tamamo-no-Bae cypriot greeks and turks have been fighting, like, just around max 80-90 years.
Yes what EOKA did back then was a mistake and Greece was run by a dictator. I can't think of any country that didn't had its ups and downs, I can't think of any civilization or ethnicity that didn't had a dark moment. It's been 50 years, Greece has no claims over the Island Cypriots don't want to be part of Greece, in fact we grown to love our Country and our own history. What is Turkey still doing there?. If you think Turkey is there to protect Turkish Cypriots then you live in another universe. Turkey wants to expand on each side and they will use anything they can. I live in Limassol, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots still live together and they are no issues at all. Cyprus is a European country, with police, with courts, a democracy with human rights and its own military. We can live together united. The only obstacle is Turkey. Whoever supports a 2 state solution has clearly not idea what that mean for Cypriots, and when you agreed for your own country to slit it up, then come talk to me. My family is from the North, the pain it amhas cost the people i love all this year is so hard to explain. Let Cyprus unite again. Turkey should not control the future of a country, what do you not get?
Then why dont you tell me why greek cypriots are against unification while turkish cypriots have been voting yes to that proposal since a long time
@toprowsky123 don't compare Cyprus now with what it used to be 50 years ago. The country just came out of British Rule the country was not stable. Those things were ok back then but not now. Now Cyprus is in Europe and has no interest of Joining Greece or anyone.
@@jaimelannister8631 We are against Turkish idea of reunification. Have you actually looked at the plan that Greek Cypriots rejected? Have you actually read about the obstacles and what Turkey is asking? Come back when you do.
Why did you reject the referendum? Speak a little morally, this is the choice of the Greeks. The only concern of the Greeks is to annex the whole of Cyprus. You either kill or exile the Turkish Cypriots at the first opportunity. Tell your lies to children.
@toprowsky123 with your logic is Like telling me that Turkey, after the occup in 2016, should had remained divided by another country. And Germany shoukd have been devided two, and England shoukd had have someone controlling them so they don't attack scots. That doesn't make any sense. You can't do this with people, countries have their own issues, not everything is pretty. But countries are countries. Stop picking and matching. Are you Cypriots? All this writing and not one sentence about Turkeys ottoman empire dreaming, who is hostile Greece? They are literally trying to erase helenism. Have you watched the news lately? Turkey is threatening the Greek Islands and greek sovereignty. Like.. wake up sometime. You keep talking about Cyprus past when Turkey is doing these things for Centuries, even now. Why aren't you talking about a possible division of turkey so we can control their hostility? Why aren't you using the same logic with Turkey?
The length of the video should have been three seconds. It is not possible for Southern Cyprus to join NATO because Turkiye does not recognize Southern Cyprus as a state. That is it.
Funny how they recognised it till 1974 when they invaded.
7:07 wasn’t aware the First World War occurred during 1961 lol
Until this year I just know Cyprus and Ireland are not NATO member
0:23 isn't Luxembourg a NATO member? it's not colored in
I've always wondered what would happen if Jack had to sit on his hands while presenting.....
tldr for this video: no, they won’t be joining nato anytime soon
Well yes, realistically Cyprus will just not join nato
Never we will not join nato with Turkey and our territory
In 1974 Portugal became a democracy, in 197x Spain became a democracy, and many other things happened. Why the 1970s? Why so many historical events?
Malta?
Stop shilling for a plattform nobody wants! Seriously, Nebula may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the fact that you use a monetization scheme that is outdated (especially since Nebula is for documentaries only it seems) makes it unpopular IMHO!
Make it like RUclips (funded by advertising before the video) and you might get a lot more people over there!
7:08 this sentence doesn't makes sense
you missed Luxembourg on the NATO map 😂
turkey occupies almost half of Cyprus illegally
Another factor might be the UK's sovereign base areas. Parts of Cyprus are actually still British territory, with a significant UK military presence. As long as British forces are on Cyprus the island is pretty safe, as any attack on the country would likely result in a response from the UK, a vastly more powerful country.
Rubbish, they wouldn't bat an eyelid, they resisted even letting refugees flee the fighting through the bases saying it could result in them being fired upon and I'm British/Cypriot
It didn't in 1974...
@@Pyrrhic537 Well yeah, but Turkey is also a NATO member so that makes things a little more... unorthodox. Wouldn't be a good look if NATO troops were shooting at each other. Also I think there was some agreement that if Turkish Cypriots were being persecuted then the UK acknowledged Turkey's right to intervene to protect them, and Cyprus had a lot of instability going on at the time.
@@someguy3766 There was no right to protect anyone only to guarantee the sovereignty of the nation of Cyprus something that Greece, UK and Turkey all betrayed.
Could Cyprus join NATO.
Britain and USA have a staging platform in Cyprus.
Simply put, we dont really need to or care to join
You really do be saying Byzantines & Romans are different eh? The only reason " Byzantium" is called "Byzantium" is because later historians didn't want to confuse the situation between different time periods within the Roman empire. The Romans never called the Eastern Roman Empire "Byzantium" - it's always been the " Eastern Roman Empire" to them.
So that being said. To name "Byzantine" and "Rome" is ... twice the same thing. The Ottoman Empire would've been better.
I'm done being a smart ass now. Thanks.
Touch some fucking grass
It would had been more accurate to say "after the fall of Rome the eastern half of the empire retained control of the island"... but, that is me being a smarty pants as well. :)
@@keizeradrianus703 Why? Because he offers accurate information to the discussion?
İt is called byzantine because they didn't speak latin or had rome.. İt wasn't roman anymore
@@Polo-rn8ly It didn't contain Rome in its boarders, but they still considered themselves to be "Romans", speaking Latin and Greek.
The majority (~80%) has always been Greek in the past 3000 years. You misspoke when you said this was not the case when the Ottomans came over.
It's impossible for Cyprus to join Nato without giving up the Northern portion of the island.
Or make Turkey leave. The rest of NATO should frankly go and kick Turkey out by force.
Give up the Northern part of their country after it was illegally taken from them? So what is in it for the Greeks?
No
Excellent video. The UK has a military base in Cyprus and they inflicted Peter Andre on us . By extension of the US/UK agreements, I think the United States too. Besides shouldn't they sort out the dispute between Greece and Turkey before joining Nato first? I understand the strategic significance, but I wish for the Greeks and Turks to resolve peacefully. Brits love holidays in Cyprus too.
UK still had piece of land there, not just miltary bases
Don't hold out hope.
UK's presence in the island is useless and serves only to the British national interest. It isn't a peacekeeping force as it didn't do anything at 1974 turkish invasion.
Greece and Turkey are like us and the Irish.
Or us and the french.
Or the southerners and the northerners...
They hate eachother.
@@davidty2006 That's why I don't understand why the Scots sometimes say they hate the English with such vitriol. The English hated the poll tax too and I've never heard any English say the converse. Why won't Cyprus join NATO?
TLDR: Because Turkey will veto it.
@@kostas0352 I didn't mean TLDR as in the channel, but as in the Too Long Didn't Read it originally stands for :P
Kick Turkey out.
This video has half truths and several variations about this topic.
The Cyprus issue is by no means simple and NATO is largely responsible for what happened and will happen on this island.
TLDR for half truths.
Cyprus has too much natural gas reserves to be shared or ceded to either Greece or turkey this is the only reason why it's trapped
And why not??? It's never too late.....
Short answer: NATO but without the A and T
I mean there really is not much to explain. Every country that has unresolved territorial conflicts cannot join NATO, full stop.
You didn't mention that according to the united nations and the international court of justice turkey has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity
You mean EOKA against turks in cyprus
@@tezcanuyank3446 just look what the un and the international criminal court have said and if they mention eoka then ok but I don't think they will
@@tezcanuyank3446How did the Turks arrive in Greek Cyprus & take over in the first place? By bringing gifts & being nice to us? What an idiot 😂
Another video that kinda says, “kick Turkey out of NATO.”
As a Cypriot, I couldn't agree more!! :D (but seriously, Turkey is bad news for many other nations, not just Cyprus)
In a perfect world it would be nice if Cyprus was one again but it wont happen because the occupied North is completely reliant on Turkey. There is 40 000 paid Turkish soldiers in the North when there is no threat at all from the republic of Cyprus.
That's not unlikely it's impossible.
0:28 - Putin: "There won't be any new members joining NATO due to suddenly arising "Legitimate Security Concerns" from Turkey. Something that of course has nothing to do with the huge check we gave Erdogan right before the sanction took effect!"
At least Erdoğan is doing Sweden a favour.
