Here is my critisism: WELL Done! I like the clear and simple demonstration of the whole process. This is the first Video I see of you and it makes me to want to see mire of these. Good Job.
Just what I was looking for. Unfortunately mine did not work. There appears to be a long standing issue where the created flash drive won't load the files or will hang indefinitely. Mine gets stuck on "loading operating system" when trying to boot from the flash drive. I've had similar issues with Linux Mint. Oddly my windows 10 pro boot flash drive does not have this problem. Wish I knew what was technically wrong.
Thank you. I was unable to get the USB creation to work until I saw your video and doing the creation from the backup window instead of downloading the creation tool directly. I followed your instructions and it worked first time.
Absolutely Perfect Video! So very helpful. We have a Synology unit and will use this technique to update all our machines. Your instructional are always Excellent Thank you!
Great video .- thanks - helped a lot. I have Windows 8, 10 and 11 on my network and I'm backing up all of the machines to my NAS. I have created a recovery USB for one of my Windows 11 computers. Do I need to make a recovery USB for each of the machines, for each distinct operating system, or would a single recovery USB be enough to bare metal restore any of the computers on my network?
I plan to use this method to restore my C: volume to a RAID0 supported by my motherboard. Will Active Backup for Business see this volume? I didn't see the option to load the ASUS RAID DRIVERS in this tutorial.
Great video! Does each Windows 10 PC need to have its own restore media made for it or can one restore media be used for all PCs backed up with active backup for business?
I have a question. I recently had a Windows Update erase my data and set my machine back to 2018. I could recover individual files and folders from my NAS without issues. However I tried to recover the ‘Entire Device’ and set it to recover the latest backup, while it completed and said it finished successfully, it actually did nothing at all. The machine was exactly was it was after the crash, still with files and updates from 2018. Now I could not find my Recovery Media USB because they were created several years ago and I had even forgotten about their existence. So I was effectively creating one after the crash. I suspect this was the problem, but I have questions. Is that fact I had misplaced the USB Recovery Media and only created a new one after the crash the reason why my bare metal restore failed to recover to my latest backup? Is there any work around if this situation happens again or do you just have to reinstall all programs and download your data manually?
I am having problem doing a bare metal restore on my laptop which is running Win 7 when I download the recovery file it says Win 10 and it’s not compatible
Is there any difference on restoring a Windows 10 workstation compared to a Windows 11 workstation? I run Windows 11 and my wife has Windows 10, I have backed up her computer to the Synology DS1621+ and I wanted to create the restoral media but my workstation is running Windows 11, do I need to create a recovery disk on a computer running Windows 10 since that is the OS on my wifes computer or will the Restoral media work with Windows 10 and Windows 11? I like the detail you do in your videos.. thanks again Jim
Nice video. I think though it leaves out one vital part for many/most people who are looking for information to restore an actual hardware computer, and that is the network-connectivity. Your guide assumes that the computer being restored to will have network connectivity to the Synology NAS where the ABB recovery images are stored. In my case it's a laptop relies on WiFi to connect to the NAS. There are no WiFi drivers in the default installation of the recovery tool. Only ethernet.
nice video ... using virtual machine does not highlight the biggest challenge. Getting the PC to recognize the USB media drive. After trying on 3 different machines (different age and make - BIOS works differently in each) got it to finally work. thank god! 1) make sure all external ports (especially other USB ports are not in use .. (I had mouse and keyboard added for the laptop) 2) had to reset the BIOS to factory/default settings to have BIOS give the option of the USB as a boot option 3) saw a video of a person moving the USB from one side of the PC to another port, did this too .. not clear this made a difference. Finally...not sure there is a fix for synology to do here ... other than awareness.
Hi and thank you for the video! Which are really the important components on Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit? And is it possible to use recovery flash made on one PC with another PC?
Currently for Worst Case Scenario in which machine is completely trashed, motherboard not working type deal, I still use Aomei Backupper Professional, and backup just my system drive to Syno network share, I used to use this for all my drives but not use active backup for all drives besides system drives, the reason for this is I have tried and tested Aoemi Backupper many times with success, with their "System Image" option, you can even restore to completely different hardware (i.e. new motherboard/amd/intel swap) without issue, as it removes all device specific drivers and replaces with generic windows drivers to create an image that can used to restore to any other machine. Is the baremetal restore that synology offers capable of restoring the System drive with everything installed to different hardware (i.e. motherboard/processor swap)?
Great video TMO. However, including the details of your VM adds a bit of confusion because 99+% of viewers will not have this. But, still worth watching several times just to burn this procedure into our brain cells. One detail that escaped me with all of the videos that I watched on this topic is that just a single recovery media is needed regardless of how many computers are using ABB; I originally thought that a separate recovery media was required for each PC. But, that's just me.
Hi does if affect when I create the ISO file on a different computer instead of the computer that i will restore? When I try to restore, it won't boot on the VM's hard disk even though the recovery is successful.. any thoughts? Thanks!
Well, in my real world, HP ENVY13 laptop is wireless only. The boot media does not include proper WiFi drivers. So can't get to the image backups on the NAS which is sitting on the same table. I am stuck!
Winpe images like this synology winpe image usually dont include wifi drivers at all. Usually, in wireless only laptops what you should do is buy a USB or thunderbolt etherner adapter and then use that to connect your laptop via cable
@@TechMeOut5 Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Will buy an ethernet adapter right away. Did not know this thing existed. BTW, the winpe does support built-in trackpad either, ugh! Will have to buy a USB hub to plug an external mouse in. This laptop only has two USB ports. Should have done some recovery planning before a disaster strikes.
This is a common question ww have answered before. In short: it could work, it could fail...there's no guarantee. Its not up to synology, its up to how well the drivers will work or clash with each other
Thank you. Very nice of you to share this. Really cool. I wish they had this for android and iphone as well. Imagine you could back up everything the same way like this!!!!
Thanks for your video, exactly what I was looking for! The only question is that do you need to create ISO media for each PC that is to be backed up, or only one ISO is required, we can use the same ISO to restore different PC as long as there are backup in NAS? Thanks!
You will need to understand what caused the failure and fix it. With as much as we do want to share our knowledge for the benefit of the community, we can't really walk hand in hand with everyone. There can be a lot of factors in play here so we cant realistically pin point the ones you encounter
Great video when restoring to the same computer hardware. I would like to find one with detailed steps when restoring to a totally different computer such as if the backed up Windows 10 computer was stolen but you have your ABB ready to restore. Thank you
According to my experience you can do that. If you restore to the sane model then no issues are expected as long the hard drive is at least the same size or larger. If you restore to a different model from a different manufacturer that you are only limited by the compatibility or lack of conflicts between drivers. In most cases, even this scenario mostly works
This product mainly aims to allow you to restore a computer in case of a hard drive failing. This can be streched to even restore one computer to a different computer as long as its the same model (even if they slightly different internals like higher cpu or more ram, it will still work). In some cases i have seen this working in caes where restoration of an older model to a newer model (for example dell optiplex 7040 to dell optiplex 7060). Other than these special use caes...its your gamble to perform
I was just recalling a scenario at my business the last time a computer failed. we scrambled to get it replaced as quickly as possible to get the employe back up and running. I was trying to avoid the pain of reconfiguring the total system and was hoping active backup could relieve me of some of that work.
