Metoprolol 10+ side effects | Things to be aware of while taking metoprolol

  • Metoprolol is known for its brand Lopressor, Betaloc and Toprol XL is used to treat high blood pressure, also called hypertension, irregular heart rhythm, also called arrhythmia, heart failure, to prevent chest pains caused by angina, and improve the survival after a heart attack. It is also use to prevent migraine headaches.
Metoprolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. It works by reducing the work
load of the heart, thus the strain of the heart. it lowers the heart rate and also widens the blood
    vessels to reduce blood pressure.
When you must not take metoprolol
    Do not take metroprolol if
you are allergic to it or any beta blockers that you might have in the past
or any other ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. If it’s your first time taking it, you will
only know it after you take it. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of
breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the
body; rash, itching or hives on the skin, if this happens, send yourself to the hospital
    immediately.
    more in video
I want to particularly talk about Asthma, taking a beta blocker may trigger your asthma symptoms or make them worse. However Not everybody with asthma is sensitive to these medicines and this is rare with metoprolol. Your doctor may decide to prescribe you a different medicine or increase the dose of your asthma preventer medication.
    Medication interaction
    Anti-inflammatories such as diclofenac (e.g.
Voltaren Rapid), ibuprofen (e.g. Nurofen), mefenamic acid
(e.g. Ponstan), naproxen (e.g. Naprogesic) which you can
buy without a script from a pharmacy.more in video
How to take it? How much to take it?
Dependent on your condition and what other medication you are taking, the doctor will
    prescribe you the appropriate dose.
Doses usually ranges from 12.5mg-200mg. It comes in slow release tablets which is taken
once a day or immediate release which is taken anywhere from 2 to 4 times
Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water.
It does not matter if you take metoprolol before or after food.
    more in video....
    Things to be aware of:
Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication
    affects you.
    • and no alcohol while you are on this medication as it can make you extra drowsy.
    • Remember to spend time reading the medication leaflet when you first receive the
medication from your pharmacist. it’s not gonna take you a lot of time, may
10 minutes. If your pharmacist forgets to give it to you, remind them. I will also put
one through a link down in the description box for you.
    Diabetes
If you have diabetes you need to take extra care to measure
your blood glucose levels regularly because Beta-blockers
can cause an increase in blood glucose levels, especially when you
first start taking them. This effect usually settles with
time.metoprolol can reduce the warning signs of a low blood
sugar level such as feeling of fast, irregular or strong heartbeats
    (palpitations) or tremor.
    Side Effects:
    • Tiredness, weak and dizziness - if this happen, stop
what you are doing - rest, sit down or lie down until the
dizziness goes away. do not drink alcohol. do not drive,
operate machinates and do anything else that could be
    dangerous.
    • you might get light headedness as well especially you stand up too quickly, we call
that orthostatic hypotension. so be careful when getting up from a lying
down of sitting position to prevent any falls. get up slowly, if possible hold onto
    something as you get up.
    • Headache - Headache should only last for 1 week. if it
goes longer than that, or its severe, see your doctor.
things you could do within this week is have lots of rest,
drink plenty of water, avoid drinking alcohol and ask your
pharmacist to recommend a painkiller for you.

They have tried to put me on Beta Blockers for years. The side effects are way worse than they help. The side effect they do not mention is what it does to your brain. Serious Vertigo and fuzzy thinking.

Why I understand advising people of possible side effects, too many read that as guaranteed side effects. I've been taking metoprolol succinate for 21 years, and I have had no adverse reactions to it at all. As someone that used to have trembling fingers from hypertension, a rapid heartbeat, and a thick heart muscle as a result of the hypertension, this drug has taken care of all of these symptoms, and as a result I feel calmer, and my heart is no longer thick walled. So for me personally, I like this particular drug.

Most people don’t experience side effects, if they do, it’s usually minor and hoes aways in a short period of times. These medication are life savers. And the benefits outweighs the potential side effects sooo much, that’s why it is on the market. These information are consumer information available when you receive the medication. It is important as well for people to be able to identify certain side effects and deal with them fast.

@@soonkiethepharmacist I've seen many say they would rather live with hypertension than take medication for it. They ignore the fact that hypertension also has side effects, and they're not possible side effects, they're guaranteed.

Some people have a negative reaction and doctors really need to listen these complaints! I found that this drug put my heart in AFib, my doctor didn't believe so... because it was not a symptom or side effect listed on warning label. Have had quite a few cardioversions and as soon as I took this drug, I was right back in AFib. After years and years of being on this drug and having chronic Afib I finally was given an ablation and now off of drug...too late, years of Afib put a strain on heart and scar tissues on lungs. This drug needs to be tested further and doctors need to "listen" when patients tell them a symptom or side effect that is not listed on label. Not everyone reacts to drugs in the same way. My sisters are also complaining of same issue. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been on metoprolol about a year. I’m 28 and used to be very physically active but took a year off for school and got out of shape cardiovascularly. I started taking metoprolol for hypertension and anxiety, and it worked fine until recently when I have started working out again... I find it extremely hard to workout now. When my heart rate is increased I start to get heart palpitations until I rest... it’s frightening. I cannot run anymore without getting tired fast... I feel like an old man with CHF! Is this normal? My doctor doubled my dose during finals since I had higher BP from stress, and I’ve been taking the same dose even though I graduated and have low stress now. There is a wonderful book named "Ototoxic Drugs Exposed" which discusses the damaging possible side effects to the ears from various drugs. Metoprolol is listed as having 6. When I told my doctor that my tinnitus was worse after taking Metoprolol, she said that it was not possible because tinnitus was not listed as a side effect. My pharmacist said that it was listed as a side effect. I looked and found another beta blocker with less possible side effects but I'm pretty sure that the damage has already been done. Everybody's system is different and some people might be able to tolerate some medicines better than other people. I'm just sorry that I didn't stand my ground.

Hello Bill, happy new year! Thank you for watching. You would need to consult your doctor about other treatments for afib. Tell him your concerns. I am not in the position to give you any personal advice on medication choices not knowing your condition thoroughly. Normally pharmacist only make prescription medication treatment suggestions directly to doctors after doctors tell us the exactly patient’s condition. We don’t directly consult patients about medication choices unless initiated by a doctor, and the report will always directly go back to the doctor first to make final decisions. Directly consulting patients might Influence their perception on their medication choices with the doctor and it might not be the best outcome for the patient. So talk to your doctor about it. You might even want to seek a second doctor’s opinion. 😊

Hyperkaelemia (Too much Potassium in your blood) is a rare side effect of metoprolol. Banana contains high in Potassium and it might further increase your potassium levels in your blood and cause all sorts of heart problem if you have metoprolol induced hyperkaelemia. Iwas previously on Atenolol and only stopped by Dr. orders due to my blood pressure being too low. What can I do besides talking to my doctor or pharmacist? The swollen tongue, anxiety and burning mouth are the most worrisome symptoms, and I feel I can't wait due to the severity of symptoms.

Hi Rebecca, I think the symptoms that you are experiencing is related to you stopping the atenolol maybe too quickly? Low blood pressure is also a very serious thing as well. Yes you do need to go back and talk to your doctor about this. Usually beta blockers are stopped slowly and in a dose reduction over a set period. But again every situation is different. You need to speak to your doctor again it another doctor. Tell them what happened.

@@soonkiethepharmacistI was put on Atenolol 25 mg for some episodes of Afib, anxiety and fast heart rate 26 years ago. I am now 67 and haven’t had any of those symptoms in at least 8-10 years. I would like to wean off the 25 mg or switch to something different. Is Metoprolol safer than Atenolol? My BP has went from 120/78 to 140/90 in last couple years. I have a choice of increasing the Atenolol to 50 mg one a day or try something like Metoprolol. Or would there be something better or just stay with Atenolol but increase to 50 mg. On Atenolol 25 mg my HR stays between 65-80. I’m just thinking my body might need a break from this drug after 26 years.

Hi Donna, it’s ok. If your are not experiencing anything, it’s all good. Side effects are usually minor and self limiting. If you feel unwell, then let your doctor know. In Australia, if a patient have more than 5 medication and the doctor is suspecting that they are experiencing side effects, the doctor can call for a specialist pharmacist to review and optimize their medication used. You can check with your doctor for services like this. Many of my patients are taking meds like a bowl of cereal, and it’s important for them to keep doing so.

I am taking 25mg metoprolol to 2x a day for a rapid pulse and I started having side effects that were hard to ignore after 6 years. Constant weight gain, breathlessness when walking, low energy and insulin kept going up. He tried switching me to carvedilol lowest dose, cant remember...maybe 3.25mg or something? But was told it was equivalent to my metoprolol dose, and it did not work as well. My heart rate and bp stayed high and never normalized but I was actually loaing weight again for the first time while eating healthy! Ive since switched back because the constant high bp and pulse was too much and while on the metoprolol again, my weight loss has practically stalled yet again. Is my body just used to the metoprolol?? Or is there an adjustment period when switching from one beta blocker to another?

    • @soonkiethepharmacist
      @soonkiethepharmacist  3 года назад +1

Hm... I think it’s the nature of metoprolol. It lowered metabolic rate, your body is slower to burn off calories. In that case you need to eat less, and increase appropriate activities. Keep a diet diary, use a desert plate instead of a normal meal plate. Eat way less than what you usually eat. Because your don’t need those calories, you don’t need them. Otherwise it will turn into weight. 😊

Metoprolol is proven to cause weight gain. Even people who practice eating low carb such as Keto find themselves unable to lose any weight. Yes, it absolutely lowers your metabolism. Of course that doesn't mean it decreases your hunger! I would ask my doctor to switch me to another medication and see if you have success with both lowering your blood pressure and lowering your heart rate. And hopefully Aslo lowering your weight!!😉

The potassium elevation is more a rare side effects. Not everyone is affected. You can still take bananas, just not too much to be on the safe side. Some people take 3-4 banana a day. Yes, you can talk to your doctor about. Blood test would be an accurate reflection of it. If your potassium levels are in normal range while you are on metoprolol and you have been taking a banana a day, you should be ok to continue doing that. :) hope that helps

Community pharmacist like us too the advise and was asking patient to eat 3 big bananas to make up for 2 x600mg potassium tablets. However this is not a good method to do it. • @soonkiethepharmacist

Hi Kevin, I think it’s more of a potential additive dizziness effect to watch out for. Metoprolol may cause dizziness at the start of treatment as blood pressure may drop too low while the body adjust it self. And zolpidem works in the brain to help you sleep which affects consciousness.

I’ve noticed two other side effects.
I take 25mg twice a day and I bicycle a bunch. If I take Melatonin the night before it amplifies the Metoprolol. My heart can’t keep up when I’m cycling. The other interaction is when I eat food with MSG. It cases my heart to race. I read that MSG can block Metropolol so I am careful. Low levels do not seem to effect like a higher amount. I ask at restaurants and check package labels but now days the phrase “and spices” means, includes MSG.

I can attest to that ed side effect. My erection went from a solid 10 to maybe 5 or 6. Worst part is that it also make my penis crooked and feels strained. Told my cardiologists but told me to keep taking it. Great taking a drug for something that I never had a need to take before my CABG but now I "have to" take to not over work my heart. If it has, you can talk to your doctor and discuss it. Many contraindicated and interacting medications are used all the time in real life practise, because there isn’t much choice left, the doctor just have to monitor patients. That’s all. Hope this help. 😊
