When I was 7 years old, I began to lucid dream and I stopped sleep walking. It was in 1987. I think it's because my Sensei had begun teaching us meditation, and my older brother was assisting me with meditation before sleep. This fellow seems so familiar to me.
I began training with Chogyam Trungpa in 1981. I've never figured him out. My connection isn't a matter of choice. For those of you bothered by his drinking (sake), I suggest you listen to the video without watching it. There's a level of clarity that is separate from his drinking. Also, the energy of those meetings is not communicated here.
Sandra my teacher is Reggie Ray, and he once said to us, "Don't even try to understand Trungpa Rimpoche". I guess the reasoning behind his actions can only be understood at or about the level of wisdom from which they were created. Thanks for your own clarity

I love this teacher. I recently suffered the same in as Trungpa ,left sided paralysis from a car accident. The chronic pain is 24/7. Nobody ever acknowledges that he is likely in a lot of pain from this serous injury. It would drive even the toughest to drink. Sorry you did not get better help with physical pain Trungpa. Its amazing what he did give of himself with a spinal cord injury and no meds.Incredible.🙂🙂
I have told people repeatedly from the very beginning that he was in a tremendous amount of pain all the time and that that was the reason for drinking ( If he was drinking!) and the drugs. I drank from his glass once. Supposedly it was straight Vodka. I found it to be straight water! But I do not think you could have "drunk from his "cup"." You have to be very qualified to do that.
As this was the seminary I attended I can say that for me, the words of the teacher was one aspect of the teaching. His immeasurable presence of kindness and the way he moves with such gentleness were also teaching us. He captured all our perceptions. We meet the buddha. Oh! How fortunate we are!
Marjolaine Robert It’s an example of what not to do - precepts state no alcohol. He knew yet led a poor example for students - there is a responsibility as a teacher. Can anyone imagine all the monasteries being run by drunken abbots? Unfortunately, he shows us our own choices, and died young when ppl and students still wud be appreciative of his teachings... Accept things as they are. Addiction is a destructive force. Clear as day. I listen to his teachings from 1970s because he was clear then, I can get what I need from that era. Just because a person is addicted doesn't preclude them from love and basic respect. Rest well warrior.
He was the only Rinpochhe who put his heart and soul to lay the basic foundation of Buddhism in the west by giving up monastic vows to live amongst the westerners, to deeply understand the western way of thoughts and to explain Buddha’s wisdom in the most chewable manner possible! For that, I believe Westerners today and those who in those days, had the opportunity to experience his teachings personally, owe a lot to him. But then there are some of us who doesn’t have the merit to see him as a great master but only think about his drinking and other unconventional way of living that we feel are not in line with the tradition of ‘normal’ spiritual masters we are more familiar with !
But he was so compassionate: he took on himself all the ignorance, the lust, the hatred, the pain of his disciples until he was burnt. He followed his disciple down to the bottom of Hell : nevertheless, something remained clear and pure within him.
This is the very first teaching i saw and he truly touched my heart from which compassion poured out. I briefly saw a documentary on his life and we need to consider what he went through. Fled from tibet under extreme hardships, entering the western society and culture, while leaving back his destroyed monastery.i feel he is holding a mirror.
Been avoiding his teachings for years but ive learned from duncan trussel, ram dass, david nichtern, and other people that studied under him cause i heard of bad stuff... i saw his picture for the first time and it freaked me out how crazy the feeling was. I wake up the next day still thinking about the picture and the feeling is even crazier... so i look him up at night because i cannot stop thibking about his face... then i see he has the same birthday as me... march 5th... You wouldnt believe how i ended up listening to his students either... his actions have altered my life before i even met him... Scary how connected i feel to him by how he "forced his way into my life"... So much shit led me to this weird man that has the same birthday as me
Even we are not in the stage of physical comfort and well ness of pictures world, we keep our right motivation of thought n consciousness for enlightenment n faith, devotion to Buddha dharma. He seems to be focused like a laser on that glass, yet the volume of sake/15-22% alcohol (or vodka/30-60%) doesn't seem to change until towards the end. Maybe it's an enigmatic trick to keep people watching him. They might think they're missing his words, but they're not really. Also, people might contemplate his actions long after the Satsang is over, which is what he wants.
Lots of people wonder how he was able to speak being so drunk. Well, the unfortunate truth is that he was doing a lot of cocaine, which he kept hidden from most except for a few in the inner circle. So keep in mind, when watching his videos and reading comments of people praising this man, keep in might that his drinking and drug habits not only harmed himself, they harmed his family and many other people, some of whom suffer to this day. In the end, he was just human, and was suffering because he could not handle the world, but this was made complicated because his job was to be a sort of 'life philosopher'. So he drank and took drugs to hide from it all. I hope he has found peace in the astral.
wow you're just the ultimate gossipy "insider"! You have no idea who was harmed and who was helped and neither do they. See Robert Frost The Road Not Taken and anyway it's just basic Buddhism 101 to understand what "free will" might mean or not and what Karma is or is not and to wonder if there is a difference between standing on one side of the street or the other. Imagination is all we have and when we lose that to linear "science" thinking we have nothing to live by. Jump off the cliff or go back to unitarian universalist church which can teach you to respect everyone and humble your smart self,. Boom! Everything that I have at one time or other perceived as negatives in my life have transformed to be my greatest teachers and comforts. That's called growth. That's called transformation. Vajrayana is all about TRANSFORMATION. Not fairy stories of good and evil and "sociologists" reports about what harms and what helps. I guess sociology is a dead science now but you get my drift. Trungpa seems to demonstrate with his actions some key point of what he is talking about. He is much of an actor or showman. As if he has read the mind of those around him and is both speaking and showing the deepest thing he could communicate to that particular audience at that time. If you are trying to figure out Trungpa Rinpoche maybe consider this feature. Usually, it seems, that if you more deeply consider what is said and done, the actual message could mean much more than what you might understand at first glance. This quality is what makes him so enigmatic, and his explanations something unique still to this day. This is also why I think he intended for us to listen to his talks, and watch his videos, and wrote only one book. As the first Modern Tibetan Buddhist teacher, his medium of communication were the modern technologies of recording and video. Lets face it, most Buddhist teachers have no entertainment value for the modern western audience.
This is a lesson in addiction. Even a realized master can be taken down by addiction. I saw him in 1974 and he was drinking a lot then. Eleven years later and he can barely speak. He can't take his mind off the alcohol or his hand off the glass. I'm so grateful I saw the truth and didn't do more than read his great books. Obviously written before his downfall.
Thanks for this comment! Have a couple of his books at home but been wondering if he was really authentic and had really any sorts of realization. Specially the abuse allegations kind of have me thinking if they were true. His teaching seemed to be full of elegance and beauty.

Trungpa’s books are brilliant translations of Tibetan Buddhist teachings that are expressed specifically in ways that Western students can most easily access the understanding and timeless truth at the root of the words. Definitely read his books. There are no perfect teachers. Some are more perfect than others.
@@lynlavalight Yes his books are brilliant. The way he translates Buddhism is pretty creative, uplifting and pragmatic. Human dignity seems to underline his teaching.
From what I understand, he was always corrupt in terms of violating the precepts. Alcohol may have aggravated this, that is why it's elevated to the level of the other 4 precepts when it appears less harmful on the surface.
The buddha himself was taken down by lust in one of his previous lifes as a king's retinue. he had purified his mind and master the way to walk on air as if walking on earth, water and fire. One day he paid a visit to his king, and by a stroke of fate as he was decending from the air to the king's chamber he didn't find the king but the beautiful queen, naked in her glorious alluring feminine form. the former life of the buddha locked eye with the queen and they both serve each other's lusts. I watched chogyam trungpa's talk with jiddhu krishnamurti on meditation and I can say with confidence he's a meditation master with significant accomplishment. And in another occasion I watched his talk on how to meditate and his tip on focusing especially on the outbreath had a very big impact on my own meditation practice. The dhamma as in prajnaparamita (condensed).. amala ... avimala...neither pure nor impure... with significant emphasis on the impure part.

Most people that we worship can't overcome some aspect of their life. And even if they did, they would find something to bash. Drunk or not, he preached things that could make someone question themselves, and didn't preach violence, or teach dogmatic thinking to cling to one thing. He preached to go above your false self. Why does everyone go to the rose garden and look at the thorns.

If being human was an obstacle to enlightenment, we would all be pretty screwed. Nice to see an adult guru. Where I grew up no one liked (or trusted) people who didn't engage with life. Fighting, drinking, sex, drugs, rock n roll these are all the things adults do. I not only want but EXPECT my teacher to have done them and be completely unconcerned whether you do them or not, not because it is enlightened, but, because it is basic adult behaviour. The primary school rules, don't swear, don't fart people can also have their own guru, where people get offended by the slightest negative feeling.

There's a phrase from the Bible, about " treasures in vessels of clay" which sums up Trungpa. At one level he seems a fucked up drunk; at another he manifests a clarity despite this which is seldom manifested in people who are stone cold sober. A paradox. Go figure!
Very sad. I visited Samye Ling in southern Scotland which he founded - this would be around 1974 - he had left five years earlier. It was here I discovered Tibetan Buddhism. Throughout the following years, I had great respect for him. But then I came across this video about ten years ago and it saddens me to see what was once a great Buddhist teacher drunk, pissed, and can hardly talk properly. I wonder where he is today - still drinking?
To all folks irritated by his state of drunkenness: There is a nice story of HAN SHAN cominout of the mountains to his monk friend in a monastery. And why yes, these guys liked booze / moonshine / wine very VERY much (maybe it is the chill over there !)
I have to come out of retirement on my posting. My grandfather, a musician and choir director, said that if he could live his life over he would never have abused alcohol. This is a pathetic display of a lack of compassion for others in that his alcohol abuse confuses the spiritual lives of the auditors. Trungpa's behavior shows that he perceives that he is psychologically separate from others in that he does not understand the interpersonal psychological effects he has on others. Someone like this can only take us so far and we can go farther.
He might have some levels of realization, but USA proves too much of temptation, booze, drugs, sex, he was an addict. A lot addicts are really smart and brilliant like that.

Perhaps that explains his slow speak and lack of aliveness, rather than him being spiritual and enlightened. I am sure meditation and his intense intelligence allowed him to hide his hungover and coke aftermath state better. What do you think?
He typically drank first thing in the morning -- huge amounts -- and continued throughout the day. When he would have a talk or gathering, he used cocaine to make himself somewhat coherent.

He's just a human. Great teachers, master meditators are still only human, and not necessarily enlightened. He was not above attachment. I doubt he wouldve chosen the harm the alcohol did to his body had he been full seeing all the time.
No, many different teachers have different styles. For example, Ramana Maharshi taught by speaking very little or not at all, only answering questions from pupils after sitting for long periods of time. Alan Watts did his teachings in even more of a lecture format with poetic delivery. Osho is known for being more explicitly comedic than most spiritual teachers, using obscenities and curse words often in order to point to spiritual truth. Ram Dass liked to include kirtan or musical chanting with his teachings. etc....
+Kieran Wilson except not by nisargadatta maharaj who acknowledged him as a great being. In fact I know of no teacher who has doubted his realization, his personal flaws aside!
I am a devotee of Adi Da Samraj and once again I can only say that one must follow ones heart in relation to spiritual masters. I have been listening to (on amazon audio) OSHO a lot lately and I must say he is a brilliant sage. He would probably be what Adi Da referred to as a sixth stage realise. As for this chap we are watching I must conclude also that of he touches your heart in a deep way then listen to him. If he offends then listen even more.
He was a known alcoholic. That beverage he was drinking was more than likely "Gin". I was shocked to see how often he was taking sips out of it and starring at it during his talk.
Well, nice of you to defend him but, be honest, it was 80% of it was incomprehensible and, you are probably accurate that at least the other 20% of my attention was occupied with "why are they showing this to the public anyway?" Which is weirder -- that he is wearing a Japanese Zen Monk costume or that Shambala posted a video of him so drunk that he cannot string two words together or hold his head up? I find that rather disrespectful. I realize he was drunk all the time but I've watched many of his videos which are boozy around the edges but so coherent, poetic and in mastery of his immense language skills. This is just unnecessary for people to relive.

Accept things as they are. Addiction is a destructive force. Clear as day. I listen to his teachings from 1970s because he was clear then, I can get what I need from that era. Just because a person is addicted doesn't preclude them from love and basic respect. Rest well warrior.
He was the only Rinpochhe who put his heart and soul to lay the basic foundation of Buddhism in the west by giving up monastic vows to live amongst the westerners, to deeply understand the western way of thoughts and to explain Buddha’s wisdom in the most chewable manner possible! For that, I believe Westerners today and those who in those days, had the opportunity to experience his teachings personally, owe a lot to him. But then there are some of us who doesn’t have the merit to see him as a great master but only think about his drinking and other unconventional way of living that we feel are not in line with the tradition of ‘normal’ spiritual masters we are more familiar with !
But he was so compassionate: he took on himself all the ignorance, the lust, the hatred, the pain of his disciples until he was burnt. He followed his disciple down to the bottom of Hell : nevertheless, something remained clear and pure within him.
That is such an interesting way of looking at him- I also remember a Ram Dass talk- where he speaks of Trungpa in this way-

Been avoiding his teachings for years but ive learned from duncan trussel, ram dass, david nichtern, and other people that studied under him cause i heard of bad stuff... i saw his picture for the first time and it freaked me out how crazy the feeling was. I wake up the next day still thinking about the picture and the feeling is even crazier... so i look him up at night because i cannot stop thibking about his face... then i see he has the same birthday as me... march 5th...
You wouldnt believe how i ended up listening to his students either... his actions have altered my life before i even met him...

He seems to be focused like a laser on that glass, yet the volume of sake/15-22% alcohol (or vodka/30-60%) doesn't seem to change until towards the end. Maybe it's an enigmatic trick to keep people watching him. They might think they're missing his words, but they're not really. Also, people might contemplate his actions long after the Satsang is over, which is what he wants.

Lots of people wonder how he was able to speak being so drunk. Well, the unfortunate truth is that he was doing a lot of cocaine, which he kept hidden from most except for a few in the inner circle. So keep in mind, when watching his videos and reading comments of people praising this man, keep in might that his drinking and drug habits not only harmed himself, they harmed his family and many other people, some of whom suffer to this day. In the end, he was just human, and was suffering because he could not handle the world, but this was made complicated because his job was to be a sort of 'life philosopher'. So he drank and took drugs to hide from it all. I hope he has found peace in the astral.

Trungpa seems to demonstrate with his actions some key point of what he is talking about. He is much of an actor or showman. As if he has read the mind of those around him and is both speaking and showing the deepest thing he could communicate to that particular audience at that time. If you are trying to figure out Trungpa Rinpoche maybe consider this feature. Usually, it seems, that if you more deeply consider what is said and done, the actual message could mean much more than what you might understand at first glance. This quality is what makes him so enigmatic, and his explanations something unique still to this day. This is also why I think he intended for us to listen to his talks, and watch his videos, and wrote only one book. As the first Modern Tibetan Buddhist teacher, his medium of communication were the modern technologies of recording and video. Lets face it, most Buddhist teachers have no entertainment value for the modern western audience.

This is a lesson in addiction. Even a realized master can be taken down by addiction. I saw him in 1974 and he was drinking a lot then. Eleven years later and he can barely speak. He can't take his mind off the alcohol or his hand off the glass. I'm so grateful I saw the truth and didn't do more than read his great books. Obviously written before his downfall.
Thanks for this comment! Have a couple of his books at home but been wondering if he was really authentic and had really any sorts of realization. Specially the abuse allegations kind of have me thinking if they were true. His teaching seemed to be full of elegance and beauty.
@@ratinhoembondeiro646 yes he was authentic. Trungpa’s books are brilliant translations of Tibetan Buddhist teachings that are expressed specifically in ways that Western students can most easily access the understanding and timeless truth at the root of the words. Definitely read his books.

From what I understand, he was always corrupt in terms of violating the precepts. Alcohol may have aggravated this, that is why it's elevated to the level of the other 4 precepts when it appears less harmful on the surface.
The buddha himself was taken down by lust in one of his previous lifes as a king's retinue. he had purified his mind and master the way to walk on air as if walking on earth, water and fire. One day he paid a visit to his king, and by a stroke of fate as he was decending from the air to the king's chamber he didn't find the king but the beautiful queen, naked in her glorious alluring feminine form. the former life of the buddha locked eye with the queen and they both serve each other's lusts. I watched chogyam trungpa's talk with jiddhu krishnamurti on meditation and I can say with confidence he's a meditation master with significant accomplishment. And in another occasion I watched his talk on how to meditate and his tip on focusing especially on the outbreath had a very big impact on my own meditation practice. The dhamma as in prajnaparamita (condensed).. amala ... avimala...neither pure nor impure... with significant emphasis on the impure part.

Most people that we worship can't overcome some aspect of their life. And even if they did, they would find something to bash. Drunk or not, he preached things that could make someone question themselves, and didn't preach violence, or teach dogmatic thinking to cling to one thing. He preached to go above your false self. Why does everyone go to the rose garden and look at the thorns.

Very sad. I visited Samye Ling in southern Scotland which he founded - this would be around 1974 - he had left five years earlier. It was here I discovered Tibetan Buddhism. Throughout the following years, I had great respect for him. But then I came across this video about ten years ago and it saddens me to see what was once a great Buddhist teacher drunk, pissed, and can hardly talk properly. I wonder where he is today - still drinking?

I have to come out of retirement on my posting. My grandfather, a musician and choir director, said that if he could live his life over he would never have abused alcohol. This is a pathetic display of a lack of compassion for others in that his alcohol abuse confuses the spiritual lives of the auditors. Trungpa's behavior shows that he perceives that he is psychologically separate from others in that he does not understand the interpersonal psychological effects he has on others. Someone like this can only take us so far and we can go farther.

Serious question: Does he look hung over? Or maybe on a morning after a coke binge? Statistically, he probably was both. Perhaps that explains his slow speak and lack of aliveness, rather than him being spiritual and enlightened. I am sure meditation and his intense intelligence allowed him to hide his hungover and coke aftermath state better. What do you think?
He typically drank first thing in the morning -- huge amounts -- and continued throughout the day. When he would have a talk or gathering, he used cocaine to make himself somewhat coherent.

No, many different teachers have different styles. For example, Ramana Maharshi taught by speaking very little or not at all, only answering questions from pupils after sitting for long periods of time. Alan Watts did his teachings in even more of a lecture format with poetic delivery. Osho is known for being more explicitly comedic than most spiritual teachers, using obscenities and curse words often in order to point to spiritual truth. Ram Dass liked to include kirtan or musical chanting with his teachings. etc....

I am a devotee of Adi Da Samraj and once again I can only say that one must follow ones heart in relation to spiritual masters. I have been listening to (on amazon audio) OSHO a lot lately and I must say he is a brilliant sage. He would probably be what Adi Da referred to as a sixth stage realise. As for this chap we are watching I must conclude also that of he touches your heart in a deep way then listen to him. If he offends then listen even more.

Which is weirder -- that he is wearing a Japanese Zen Monk costume or that Shambala posted a video of him so drunk that he cannot string two words together or hold his head up? I find that rather disrespectful. I realize he was drunk all the time but I've watched many of his videos which are boozy around the edges but so coherent, poetic and in mastery of his immense language skills.
