I have listened to this multiple times and a few of the Stories provoked tears. Just recalling them now is doing it again. How could I love a man I never met? Such are the mysteries of this profound lineage he left to us.. 🙏🥲
Once Trungpa invited many great Beat poets to Boulder. Snyder, Waldeman, Ginsberg, and others. They gave a presentation about poetry, its purpose, and a class they wanted to start when Naropa U got off the ground. Trungpa wandered in, coming down the aisle past me a bit late, as usual, took his seat on the dias and set down a tall glass full of clear liquid which he said was Vodka. Throughout the presentation, he kept drinking and drinking from a glass that never emptied if you looked, and gave the appearance of being very drunk, to the point that he took the huge Tibetan ringing bowl used to announce the beginning, put it upside down over his head and began beating it! The whole audience of UC students and professors was absolutely still in shock! I was sitting in the back. As a child of three divorces and a lot of alchoholism, I was in such fear and turmoil, I could hardly watch. I had a sneaking suspicion, tho. In the midst of my fear, the thot that it was only water suddenly rushed in, but I couldn't bear to watch the show and had to leave. That was how I learned about the depth of fear I had in my childhood, which I had not realized before. No violence, but just things I couldn't understand and yelling that frightened me so much. I believe Trungpa was drinking water! and I believe the thot that it was only water was from him to re-assure me. The rest was my projection from fear on the present situation. That was a really important understanding for me. I still have to be careful about unfounded projections coming from the past. Remember, you don't have to believe what you think! I reallly wanted to go up to the stage and take a drink from his glass to find out, but I didn't have the guts. I was naughty, but also very shy in those days!
I must admit this I come from the shambhala lineage and I never heard this story but his reputation doesn't exceed him. To just hear this now 03/28/2021 is amazing. This is my tibetan buddhist name "Chumpa Chogong". Fabulous legend !!!
My favorite Trungpa story was about saki. Japanese executives for a saki corporation wanted to increase exports, so they actually flew to a wine shop in Boulder to see how the operator sold so much product. The owner said that he didn't sell to many people, but one customer (Trungpa) bought alot. Lol!
To add to that, as Trungpas student, many of us drank what he drank! Kiku Masamuni sake…although it’s possible he drank more than all of us combined! Even so, his talks were crystal clear.
The falling down the stairs situation was with John Fabbro and not exactly how you told it. After the fall (it's not at a clear that your threw himself down) he spend a lot of time with John Fabbro giving him special attention which was frankly wonderful. But even then there was no claim that Rinpoche did this on purpose although that was one possibility. It was something that happened, and for that you should read Lady Diana's book (his wife) which has a section on that situation. The house Kasung at Kalapa Court (often myself) would walk behind Rinpoche to make sure that this didn't happen again. One time with me he pretended to fall a little and I stopped it, and he said "just testing" in his high voice. One thing that is always true is that I felt that he was open to who I was and I shared with him both my good and low moments (knowing what I should and utter confusion) because on that level I felt no fear. Just remember what the Buddha and the Vidyadhara said: "you are responsible for yourself". There's nobody to catch you which is one of the lessons. There seem to be a lot of people who seemed to have thought that he could live their life for them. Rinpoche said that the path is the teachings meeting real life. He was not responsible for every student - we made our choice and had to face the consequences, not always great. Drive all blames into oneself (or "one" in another translation).
True mahasiddhas don't say about themselves but everyone can feel them and this is the man , whom I have respected as my Guru I can get the feeling of a true mahasiddha Jay guru Tsem Rinpoche
Wow...... I'm just getting to know both Trungpa & Tsem Rinpoche now. 🙏 Fascinating story and he is the pioneer of spreading Buddhism in the West. Same goes in our ordinary people with ordinary life.......Some people look like a bad person in the eyes but they shows the good sign when they died, due to their faith and devotion to the Dharma.
Lama Tsonghkapa clearly mentioned: if a lama teaches something that is against the dharma it should be avoided and opposed. If the lama’s teaching is in accord with the dharma it should be followed, if it is in discord with the Dharma it should not be followed. Maybe he did crazy stuff and had fun, but that is not dharma in my opinion.
I don't know about this. Unless you understand you really don't exist as an individual. The Baghdad gita says god is in the dog eater. The gnostic gospels say god is in the whore. I finally realized they have no idea they are supposed to worry about a reputation.
Chögyam Trungpa saved my life and I never even met him. He made look in the mirror and see basic goodness. Forever grateful. In tears
have you ever met any of his students ?

I was VCTRs student and knew John Perks, the author of the book. There are aspects of Johns book that resonate with my experience of our teacher.
John Riley Perks

The more I learn about Trungpa, the more I doubt he was a true mahasiddha. I don't think he was crazy wisdom. He was just crazy.
Oh God, not fecking Trungpa yet again. Actually Trungpa's star has continued to FALL after his death as we learn more and more about his sad story.
