  • Big problems require big solutions. Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans, primarily from rivers. And the plastic that’s afloat within the oceans isn’t going away by itself. To effectively solve the problem, we need to both halt the trash flow from rivers, and remove legacy plastics from the oceans at the same time.
    In our latest podcast, Matthias Egger, Head of Environmental and Social Affairs, discusses how we help local communities by looking at global problems through a holistic but specific lens. Listen to the full podcast here: theoceancleanu...
    While solving pollution on a small scale and changing people's lives, we work on global solutions. We use the data from river deployments in various countries to develop a blueprint for the future by writing Environmental and Social Impact Assessments.
    This way, we mitigate risks, monitor what we do to create a larger impact on the world, publish research and try to make upstream changes. For example, Matthias shares his experience at the INC negotiations, where over 160 countries work on the first international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.
    He also talks about his personal experiences throughout his six years working for The Ocean Cleanup and what this means to him as a father.

    We also need national/local governance change. Keep intercepting river trash, and cleaning the oceans, but if people keep dumping trash into the river...People's actions have to change so they make and use collection points. Besides that there also has to be legislation change for international shipping, they should be responsible for cleaning up their own mess or be liable for when other people are forced to do that for them.
    That said, I think it's also worthwhile to organize beach walks under the banner of ocean cleanup. This can create awareness and engagement, but also self-identifies and cleans up the worst beaches. Or put ocean cleanup waste bins on recreational beaches that were made with recycled ocean waste and ask people to carry one discarded item to the bin. Want some money from donors, probably best to ask people that see a beach being cleaned up right then and there, and not by intercepting people during their commute home.
    Now if their can grow a grass-roots movement across the globe then it will also be possible to unite and obtain enough people to petition the UN or affect consumer choice.

      Nah, don't like the nanny state solutions, seems a bit fascist. Clean the rovers, clean what's in the ocean. Give the poor countrys infrastructure so they can have a waste disposal system instead just "throw it in the river." Us stopping them using fossel fuels in the name of Climate change why this whole problem exists in the first place. Though what's china's excuse if I'm right? Maybe their fascism stops people helping themselves.

    I visited Jamaica in 2016. Beautiful island, however empty plastic bottles littered the roads sides & spoiled some of the beaches. The locals seem to be totally oblivious to it.
    Hopefully this has been addressed?

    I live in Germany. The government here has established a pet system where you pay a deposit on every bottle you buy that you will receive back when you bring the bottle back to the grocery store.
    It’s rare to see bottles floating around in rivers here. This is what would need to be established worldwide.

    • @timothyball3144

      Some states in the US have bottle deposits, but we still see massive amounts of bottles thrown away.

    • @hallo_welt1111
      @hallo_welt1111 Месяц назад +1

      It all depends how high the Deposit is and how much Money you have. In Germany people Even search the trash for bottles and people who want to Throw bottles away put them NEXT to the trash, for them to be easier picked up by someone Else. Since the deposit is more expensive than the actual Price of the bottle, there might be a Problem though…

    100000000% need river interception because even the great job the ocean does it removes say less than 1% at time and by that time its removed maybe 10% added back into the sea. i hope many more interceptors are built asap

      Poor countrys need coal and gas plants. So can smelt steal and have infrastructure to process waste before gets to the river. Need more white people in management. We don't need feminism and DEI or else we start to look like their communitys.

    Problem is, people in some regions dump trash faster than those cleanup techs can collect them. Until they change the way they throw garbage (and also until the fishing tech improves), OC is a tech demo / media-making to raise awareness, not tackling the root cause (yet)

    • @SpecialeW
      @SpecialeW Месяц назад +6

      Actually they are.
      Everywhere they operate, they are in contact with (local) government.
      They encourage legislation and regulation where they can.
      Yes, river interception does not prevent people from throwing their plastic in the environment, but it's not like OC just ignores that.

    Closing the tap starts with banning unnecessary plastics.
    Consumers need to work to ban as much plastic in their lives as possible to close the tap of plastics coming out of their homes.
    Plastics aren't recycled, they'd dumped. Countries like the USA simply dump their plastic waste in other countries, such as China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Spain, Pakistan, Turkey, India, etc. Much of the plastic problems other countries face is plastic waste from imports from more developed countries.
    Until CONSUMERS take responsibility and choose to turn off the tap of plastics flowing out of their homes, the problem of plastic pollution will continue.
