Darn and son of a gun are more polite versions of damn and son of a bitch used to keep your Grandmother from slapping your head. Son of a bitch is more severe than bitch because the first implies that your parent engaged in sexual congress with a canine. I worked in heavy construction for 35 years so I have heard just about every swear phrase used.

    1. Damn is technically a swear word in the U.S. but it's a very very mild one. Most probably wouldn't even consider it a swear.
    2. Nobody says "darn tootin'". Not even in the South. Maybe it was something people said hundreds of years ago, but nobody seriously says that. They'll only say it in a joking way, like when you said it.
    3. Swear words are not exclusive to the South. They're just as common everywhere.

I looked up "Son of a gun" and the interesting thing is its actually originally British. It is a term from the old sailing days when women were allowed to accompany the sailors on long voyages, sometimes these women would be wives or girlfriends, but often they would be prostitutes. Sometimes, a baby will be born on ship, and the birth will be on the gun deck. So, by calling someone a 'Son of a gun', you are suggesting that their mother was a ship-board prostitute.

In truth, 'son of a gun' is of British origin.
In the days of fighting sail, British sailors slung their hammocks on the gun deck. When ships made port, traders would row out to the ships to do business with the sailors aboard. Sometimes prostitutes climbed aboard and served the sailors in the only space available -- between the guns or across a gun. To be a 'son of a gun' was to be a bastard born of a prostitute, fathered by a visiting sailor. When it originated, it was a worse insult than 'son of a bitch'.

Not the only proposed origin of the phrase and it was also proposed that the saying oroginated on British ships when wives were allowed to accompany their spouses on the ships and it was ruled that pregnant ladies were to give birth between the gun racks to keep the pathways on the deck clear, therefore coining the phrase son of a gun

The frequency that the British use the word CUNT is quite legendary. Though it does lose its shock value with frequent use. Which is why we Americans consider it a highly offensive thing to say to a woman and therefore reserve it for only the most special occasions.

2:45 In a select few cases, some might mean motherf*cker incestously, but I think the most common meaning is someone who has no morals, self-control, or class, and that they might even sleep with their friend’s (or anyone else’s) mother if they felt like it. I’m curious to see the British counterpart to this video! 😂

It definitely would be and I'll have to do some research, but the first result I did on a google search says that in 1898, a man used being called a motherfucker as part of his defense in a murder trial. That seems a little more serious than just being accused of general lechery to me, but I still want to look deeper and see. I'll let you know if I find anything that seems supported across multiple sites. Also, darn it, now I'm going to have to clear my browsing history before I let our child start on her homework :D

When we call somebody an ass, we are literally calling them the animal. It's because an ass is considered a stubborn animal, and calling somebody an ass means they are a stubborn, difficult person. Goddamn or goddammit is considered very vulgar in the south or bible belt (these aren't the same thing), but most other places it's not a big deal. Damn by itself isn't really considered a swear word at all these days. Probably the worst word in the US, that doesn't seem to be a big deal in other English speaking countries, is "cunt", which I'm surprised you didn't cover.
Anyway, goddammit, I fucking love your channel. You assholes are some entertaining motherfuckers. ;)

Im more offended that people think Texas is as southern as you can get. Not even close. Just because it’s a large state doesn’t mean it’s the most southern.
If you want true southern try visiting the “Deep South”. South Carolina (ya know, the state that decided it would remove itself from the rest of the US during civil war). Georgia. Alabama. Mississippi. Tennessee.
That is the true south. And you would not believe some of the traditions and slang you’d hear here 😂😂

I like jack-assed son of a bitch. It's fun to combine curse words. My favorite is "shit fucking hell". Or, "damnitall to shit fucking hell". Usually when I've forgotten something. It's only indirectly self-directed.

I was going to say stringing them together is an art form that she did rather well. It's always fun to hear videos with the beeps (like from an accident or something) and to hear a string of 20 beeps just going and going.

"Son of a gun" is of 18th century British origin. Women were allowed to accompany their husbands on voyages aboard Navy ships. If a woman gave birth, she did it behind the canvas curtain near the midship gun and the child would be listed as a "son of a gun" on the ship's registry.

"Son of a gun" comes from the phrase "shotgun wedding." A shotgun wedding is a situation where a couple gets married right after they find out about an unplanned pregnancy (typically when both parties are younger).
It's called a shotgun wedding because the father of the pregnant girl could very well be forcing the guy to marry her at gunpoint. The image it brings to mind is the father standing at the altar with a shotgun in hand.
A "son of a gun" literally means the child of a couple that ended up in a shotgun wedding (that is, an unplanned, teen pregnancy).
Nowadays, it has lost that meaning and is just a censoring of "son of a bitch"

“Damn” is kinda toeing the line between swearing and not. It’s not polite, but most people don’t care. I wouldn’t say it around children.
“Goddamnit” is seen as more vulgar, because like you said, it’s seen by Christians as taking the lords name in vain. And there are several Christians here. Kind of a lot, actually.
“Asshole” is kinda unique in that it is typically only used to insult men. It sounds sort of strange to hear a female referred to as an “asshole.” But it’s kind of a mid-level swear word. Probably around the level of “shit”
“Motherfucker” is probably slightly more insulting than plain ‘ol “fuck,” but if you’re already at “fuck,” I don’t suppose it much matters what you tack on to it at that point.

American folklore (may not be true, likely isn’t) is a son of a gun was a near bastard. If a man got a woman pregnant out of wedlock, the father of the woman would force the father of the child at gunpoint to married his daughter. Hence the term shotgun wedding. Done so the child would not be born a bastard. The child was said to be a son of a gun meaning momma n daddy had a bit of a rushed wedding. The Bible belt is our version of your Midlands, except ours goes north to south. Texas to Canadian border basically. Full of orthodox Christians, thereby a straight line up the middle, much like a belt. As for “the south”... google something called the Mason Dixon line, that might help 🙂
