To all potential pet owners, please please please.......don't buy. Please check with all the shelters in your area before you buy a new pet. There might be a pet in one of the shelters that would be suitable for you. You never know. If you give them love, once they feel safe with you, you will get it back from them tenfold. I adopted my dog over a decade ago from the SPCA, and he was such a loving boy after the first couple of months of adjustment. He stayed with me until the last day of his life on earth, 8th Dec 2022. There was nothing else the vet could do for him. He would have turned 15 if he had lived another 3 months. I still think of him everyday.
I don't understand how pet owners can give up or worse, abandon, their pets. They're not just animals, not just pets. Once you bring them home, they become a family member. They spend all their time with you and your family, they love you unconditionally, they're happy when they see you're happy, and they feel it too when you're sad. And they're dependent on you for everything they need. To them, you're their everything.

Alot of potential non-actual animal lovers just want pets for status...be wary of those kinds who only look at breeds. Those type of people should never own a pet.

We need to track down illegal pet breeders to stop the problem at the root. A pet is a commitment, not a toy. People who abandoned pets are folks who didn't do their research beforehand and don't realise how much time and money you need to commit to owning an pet for life. The cost of check-ups, vaccinations, medications and senior care is not small.
If people just want something cute but don't want to commit time or money into its care, then they should get a cactus. Not a pet.

My little lovely sweet Minka (cat) was surrendered to a shelter 5 yrs ago in New Zealand, after being rehomed for several times (even 6 times). When my husband and I adopted her, she was very anxious, aggressive and distant. Even at one time, she attacked me and bit me near my left eye. BUT love is unconditional, we got a pet psychiatrist specialist, who helped us into understanding and managing a special needs pet. From there onwards and with lots of love and patience, Minka changed into a new cat, understanding all her needs, we could give her a better life with what we have. And nowadays, at her final years (she is not eating a lot), we are pampering her a lot as much we can. We are seizing every day with her, she's our Little Princess ❤

Sad to watch this episode. I am a furmom myself, and i adopted my boy from a vet when the mom dog died after giving birth, the owner didn't come back for the dog and the puppies were up for adoption. Out of 8 puppies, only 5 survived and by the time I went to the vet, only 2 puppies left for adoption. I wish i could hv adopted both puppies that time but i knew how much it will costs me and how much time i needed to spend, so i only could afford to adopt 1. My boy is now 8 yrs old this year, a mixed poodle and schnauzer. I still wonder till this day what happened to the other puppy that i didn't adopt 🥲😭 But it's the best decision I've made to adopt my boy. You really need to take time to train, take them for walks, vet for the regular vaccines etc. It's like a commitment that you need to stick to till the end of their lives. Dogs don't live very long, so to them, you're their everything. Please think 100 times before buying. Don't shop but adopt instead 🙏🏻

Pets should not be allowed on public transport because some people are afraid of animals, some are allergic. Unless you're willing to pay for those people's treatment for allergies? For taxis and grab, they need to do extra work of cleaning up the car and the air inside so they demand higher charge just like you would too if you're the driver.

Thanks for covering this topic, CNA! A lot more can be done indeed. There are also a lot of people giving up bunnies or ill-treating them. Bunnies are domesticated rabbits and not wild rabbits so they cannot survive out there at all. They don't make sounds that can attract attention when they need help. I once asked a pet shop staff what breed is this particular bunny in a cage, and he answered the wrong breed, plus the cage was too small for it. It barely had any space to hop. Pet shops are profit-driven so they just want to sell the pet for the money and not think too much about it.

Pet shops are facing a conflict of interest in selling pets as its their "inventory". The longer the pet stays with them, the more in maintenance. And after crossing a certain age, it gets exponentially harder to sell - ie. after being full grown, harder to train and their personalities are more fixed.

Pet shelters also make it difficult to adopt. It makes sense to screen adopters, but as it stands, they simply dont welcome people to even visit or see the animals. You need to make appointments, choose online, etc. In the past, you could just go to spca and see which dog vibes with you. But not anymore.

I hope there will never come a day that I have to give him up for any reason at all. If it happens that I really cannot afford his medical bills in the future, I'll probably do some kind of hospice care at home so that he can die by my side. Euthanasia will be the very, very last resort if he is in a lot of pain. If I were to die or get sick, I hope those will only happen after him so I can take care of him till the end of his life. Will work hard to make sure I have the financial means to care for him. Otherwise, we'll just switch to cheaper cat food lol. May both of us stay healthy of course. I believe that you should take care of your pet for life. Hence, I thought hard and long before bringing him home. He was a semi-feral stray that I used to feed. Everything was still on me even though I offered to sponsor the cats that I requested them to help catch for TNR. And one of those is an organization specifically for TNR too. Even those replies took a long time. They basically just told me to bring the cats over to the vet clinic they're affiliated with and that's it. This is the cost for having a senior dog and this cost excludes veterinary prescription diet. Most dogs that are taken to shelters or end up in shelters are there because of their owners, dogs do the best they can with the info the owners give them. If your dog is chewing up your furniture, shoes, carpet etc,, that's your fault. If your dog is going potty in your house,, that's your fault. If your dog doesn't mind,, that's your fault. DOGS NEED EXERCISE, correct training, EXERCISE, patience, EXERCISE, consistency, EXERCISE , love, and Exercise. A tired pup is a good pup. Be honest with yourself about how much time you actually have to give a dog to give it all the things they require BEFORE you get one, research the breed you think you want BEFORE you get one. It's heartbreaking seeing all these beautiful animals that are in shelters because their humans gave up on them, 6 million pets every year end up in shelters in America. HEARTBREAKING! 6 MILLION EVERY YEAR, THINK ABOUT THAT NUMBER BEFORE YOU BREED YOUR DOG, BEFORE YOU BUY A DOG, BEFORE YOU SPEND THOUSANDS ON A DOG GO TO THE SHELTERS OR RESCUES THEY HAVE EVERY BREED YOU COULD EVER WANT, AND DON'T GET HIGH ENERGY BREEDS IF YOU LIKE TO SIT AND WATCH TV. OR PLAY VIDEO GAMES MOST THE DAY, EXERCISE IS SUPER IMPORTANT FOR DOGS SO IF YOU Aren't going to give your dog lots of ways to get their energy out, they will find a way to get it out,, by chewing, barking, destroying stuff, etc. Dogs are forever, they are not just until! Until you have a baby or until you move or until your new boyfriend/ girlfriend doesn't like your dog or until he chews up something. Or until you suddenly don't have the time . They feel the same pain , and heartache people do and the way people just discard them is horrific and it needs to so
Stop. I have 5 rescues and they are the sweetest pups, and they are purebred dogs that other people spent alot of money on to just give them up when it got to be to"hard" or "time consuming" or whatever the excuse is. Dogs should be family members and should be treated as such for their entire life.

I used to work in shelter 90 percents of the pets are stray and not pedigree ( meaning not from breeders ) . Imagine if you buy a 7k dog or cat would u dump them on the street ? Same like if u buy an expensive luxury item will you throw them on the street ?

I took in a stray kitten from the streets of Bangkok and never left her behind until her dying moment at the age of 15 due to the negligent of the Singapore vet. My 2 other dogs were also adopted and one lived until 16 and my other one is now 18. I've spend 10's of thousands of dollars to relocate them to Paris, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Paris, Singapore for work and would never think twice about abandoning them just because I didn't pay for them. My issue is that, out of the 7 countries I have lived in, the quality of vet care and availability of specialist is the word (only one cardiologist in the country), and there are extortionist vet who would fail to inform you of risks of certain procedures which is how a consult for a second opinion with a specialist at the most expensive hospital led to the demise of my most beloved cat.

Wanted a cat but I wouldn’t dare as I have not cat proof my house.
