In my country, Indonesia, there is something similar called "Piring Makanku". Basically the food groups consist of starch (grains and tubers), protein sources (animal and plant derived), vegetables, fruits. The amount of vegetable in one meal should be the same as the starch. The amount of protein is half of starch, then fruit is half of vegetable.
I love that you make veganism so accessible. I often see those vegan youtubers who eat nothing but raw fruit it seems...it turns me away from it. I am going to try it out next week thanks you all your helpful info!
I think people are confused what the definition of veganism is: www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism (it's not a diet, it's a philosophy) She makes the plant-based diet accessible, but hardly ever speaks on animal rights and the ethics of why you ought not consume animal products. She's a dietitian, not an activist so I get it .. but she doesn't speak a vegan message.

I will never be vegan because i have cats but if i can change my diet i will be more calm. Lilly Dragon - I agree, that's why Sadia is so brilliant. She is a dietician and nutritionalist who is wanting to educate people in healthy eating and she really does know what she is on about. I love that she imparts her knowledge in a non preachy way and just does it because she wants to help us all get healthier. She is amazing and I have learnt so much from her.

As far as I know, our Canadian Food Guide is pretty similar to the US one. The inclusion of "alternatives" is new and likely a product of public pressure.
@@Lionforaday A new Canadian food guide has been drafted and is set to be released this year. Apparently the dairy and meat industry is upset because they were refused to be met with regarding the development of the new guide and, as far as I know, dairy is no longer considered its own food group and there is an emphasis on choosing plant-based proteins. I was part of the public consultation process, though I have not seen the finished guide to be released. There have been a ton of news articles about this though if you are interested in learning more! I'm so excited!

I first heard about the plate method in a nutrition class I took years ago. It’s what helped me realize my stomach condition did much better when I ate more fruits and vegetables, which eventually lead me to becoming vegetarian, then to becoming fully plant based.
Nice video Sadia! I wanted to share with you a little thing. I am an Indian and in India, the plate is called "Thali". When you order a 'Thali' even in restaurants, you get something similar to what you mentioned in this video. You get curried vegetables 2 or 3 different varieties (in small portions, together they are enough as half of the plate), 1 small bowl of daal (lentils), 1 or 2 chapatis (wheat tortillas but a little small in size) and a small portion of rice. Also buttermilk or curd is served with "Thali" in order to digest everything. Same is the traditional way of eating at home. I try to eat as balanced diet as I can and also I try to implement the same for my child. But I cannot manage to make whole "Thali" (plate) for both lunch and dinner. So its managed half and half during both meals. Again thanks for sharing the video!

You're lucky that your guidelines specify milk and alternatives and meat and alternatives! The official guidelines I studied told that humans have to eat animal derives products to be healthy. And that delayed my transition to veganism with quite a few years... In the end I did my own research and shortly I'll celebrate my first veganiversary. And that's why I love to share veganism - to help people and to raise awareness. Thanks for doing this amazing informative series! We need more people who support and share veganism and optimal nutrition as a vegan :)

ethically u might be uncomfortable but naturally, nature made us meat eaters. Its not the protein that's the issue that guidlines tell u to have meat its because of B12 which is extremely important for humans without which u lose muscle, mobility n any kind of brain power; including memory lose, brain fog, overwhelming. to keep u sane n moving u need to eat meat naturally but if u dont want to then go for supplements. but its good to be conscious about what u eat n how it impacts environment n our body with least foot prints. sorry for my lack of punctuations :(
Divya Sasidharan Believe it or not, I know how important B12 is. But I was stating that it's nice to have some guidelines that acknowledge this lifestyle as a healthy one.
I was actually b12 deficient . Because of this reason I was afraid to go vegan. Even though eating animals didn't help. So I switched over to being vegan. I take a b12 supplement when ever I remember but now I feel better then ever, physically and mentally. We do not need meat! Been vegan for 2 years now! :)

I've used this method for a long time now....ever since I was erroneously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. (I have type 1....long story, but lost down to 98 pounds and still needed insulin). I find it really helpful to have a simple visual. I've also studied nutrition (on my own, not at university) for years. Love learning!

Hey Sadia, I just wanted to say that after watching your video on soaking certain foods, I started soaking my steel cut oats which I've never done before and it has rocked my world. thank you so much.
the second sunrise I just soak them overnight. Literally before I go to bed, I put the oats in a bowl and cover them with water. Don't measure the water, just make sure the oats are covered. Then I drain the oats in the morning and cook the oats in a little almond milk. It's hard to describe all the effects of doing this. I feel like I can digest them soo much better and in turn I feel a lot better. I didn't know if I would notice such a difference, but it has been a game changer for me. Plus after you soak them, they cook up lickety split and not the usual 30-40 minutes. Another bonus. I hope that helped.

From experience. Run some blood work after around a year of being vegan. Personally I found out that I am not absorbing Vit. D and Vit. B12 supplements which kind of wrecked havoc into my body. Try not to think about proving anyone wrong, it is all about finding whats best for us :)

@Ayluh A Hey I totally agree; veganism does not have the answers for optimal nutrition! My friend became a vegan and she can cook, but what she makes for her "healthy" vegan foods and plates is really nice looking, but I personally can't eat it it's so gross, dry, over cooked and veggies incorporated into a patties and it's just the worst kind of meals possible. Veganism can work, but without SOY, SOY, SOY in vegan patties, soy this and soy that; vegan food is so over-processed it's very fake. I get our meat industry if you look into that fucking sucks! I'm into eating meat, but what the cows are fed and how they are treated is fucked up!

Also, do you leave this type of comment on nonvegan channels that also promote keeping the processed food to a minimum. Because Ive watched some of those channels and they show the same if not more processed foods. And, processed does not always equal bad

I follow almost every piece of advice you offer on this channel, but I have a question about something I’ve been struggling with for a while now. I learned a few months ago about food combining for digestion. For example, “always eat fruits separately” and “don’t eat grains with proteins or starchy carbs.” What do you think about this ideology? from your education, is there any validity to it? And what is your opinion on monomeals, or eating as few ingredients together as possible to increase nutrient absorption?

I would also love your thoughts on this topic! I eat WFPB (have for years), but digestion has still been a challenge. Food combining is something I've been loosely trying to implement, but I would like to know if there is compelling evidence that this is not necessary for good digestion.

Eat fruits before meal because, No milk because ..., etc. etc. ; ) Also the book "WHOLE" written by the author of "CHINA STUDY" will help you too.

This is very helpful! I sometimes struggle to get a meal that is balanced so I don’t get either bloated or hungry after an intensive chewing session 😂 This video cleared up a lot for me! Hi, chikpeas are proteins. Like lentils, beans, peas. Buckwheat, kinoa, millet, rice, corn, oats, wheat, rhye, amarant, barley etc are grains. Potato is a starch vegetable meaning it is not very nutritious. Other vegetables are more nutritious like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, celery or parsley root, beetroot etc.

I went vegan in January but I was not balanced and I was not getting enough nutrients (and you could tell because I was always tired and was losing weight). I had to stop. But last week I decided that I would try again with a better mind set. After watching your videos (and a few other random ones) I think I'm set and I am so thankful for your videos! I want to transition my family but my sons have severe nut allergies, and with their autism they only eat certain foods. I'm allergic to avocados 😞.How can I incorporate more fruits and veggies in their diet or at least gradually introduce the idea? Suggestions welcome. Thanks #newsubbie
honeybee0503 i like making a cheese sauce out of cauliflower, carrots, and potatoes! You can also use tofu for extra protein. Of course you also have to add the typical seasonings- salt, pepper, garlic, lemon, nooch, etc. Making veggie tots could be helpful too! Or adding some veggies like beets and spinach to fruit snoothies!
u dont have to force urself, ur body will guide u.. u can slowly transition, by adding and testing 1 veggie or fruit at a time. dont give ur body a shock of completely changing its sources
Whenever nuts are discussed, find a seed or legume alternative :) This includes the butters too! (Like sunflower seed butter) As for alternatives to the avocado, it depends on what you're using it for... Like instead of guacamole dip, you can dip in hummus instead. You could probably make a savory-tasting chia seed spread/jam instead, if a recipe calls for using mashed avocado as a spread... like on a sandwich or something. There's plenty you can do :) I recommend looking through the PUL website to find really good recipes. There are other really good vegan recipe books, too, that have all kinds of great ideas for replacements/alternatives. As for the autistic children, that's obviously less simple. honeybee0503 Oh She Glows (blog and cookbooks) would be another good resource. Her second cookbook is a staple in our home and it has tons of substitution recommendations for nut allergies and others. She has young kids and has a kid-approved tag that might be a good place to start on her blog.

I can't use canned legumes, even with rinsing them, they hurt my stomach, I always have to do the soaking and cooking myself to be sure they do no harm. When you are sensetive, canned foods realy are not the way to go, if you have no trubble, than why not ^^
Piyush Uniyal I am not sure, but I would suggest researching the topic from different sources (for example, the U.S. government's recommended guides may push for dairy more than another country's). If you have access to Google, there is a section that can lead you to scholarly articles (make sure they are peer reviewed, so that you know that they have been scrutinized in the field)
Śūnyatā Eight I think the idea is that people don’t got as much calcium purely from plant sources as they may think. Like someone previously said, countries have different suggested recommendations for calcium. If you’re eating a diverse diet with an emphasis on veg over fruit, you’ll likely get a majority but not meet the actual recommendation. Or you can try to eat at the recommendation but that would be less intuitive and risk feeling limiting. Fortified foods and milks on the side would bridge the gap.
This is such a great video! I only wish you had emphasized that b12 supplementation is essential for vegans AND non-vegans, considering about 40% of adults are b12 deficient in the US.
This was verry helpful. I was a bit concerned about if I am doubling up on too many carbs with having the grains and the plant-based proteins but having researched it and watching your video has helped me to "simmer" down about that LOL. I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and the yummy recipes!
Mariam Trgt - I too would love to know about her teeth. Since eating more fruit and veg, I find my teeth have become very sensitive and I worry if the acid is dissolving my enamel? I always use a stainless steel straw when drinking smoothies to avoid this, but my teeth are hurting a bit. All the vegans I follow on RUclips all have amazing teeth, so Sadia, if you can help us out here, please do give us your tips or make a toothcare video.
You are right about being concerned about the acid. I gianed a lot of tooth sensitivity in the latest years. Maybe lack of hygiene during the day, acids from fruits too long in the teeth without rinsing or cleaning and most of all... Bruxism.

In my country, Indonesia, there is something similar called "Piring Makanku". Basically the food groups consist of starch (grains and tubers), protein sources (animal and plant derived), vegetables, fruits. The amount of vegetable in one meal should be the same as the starch. The amount of protein is half of starch, then fruit is half of vegetable.
I love that you make veganism so accessible. I often see those vegan youtubers who eat nothing but raw fruit it seems...it turns me away from it. I am going to try it out next week thanks you all your helpful info!

I think people are confused what the definition of veganism is: www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism (it's not a diet, it's a philosophy) She makes the plant-based diet accessible, but hardly ever speaks on animal rights and the ethics of why you ought not consume animal products. She's a dietitian, not an activist so I get it .. but she doesn't speak a vegan message.

I will never be vegan because i have cats but if i can change my diet i will be more calm. By the way, Canada's 2019 Food Guide uses the plate method! And the classic glass of milk has been replaced with a glass of water.

Water on the other hand is the best liquid to quench one's thirst , hydrate cells and flush out germs, harmful chemicals, toxins, viruses and other pollutants.

Lilly Dragon - I agree, that's why Sadia is so brilliant. She is a dietician and nutritionalist who is wanting to educate people in healthy eating and she really does know what she is on about. I love that she imparts her knowledge in a non preachy way and just does it because she wants to help us all get healthier. She is amazing and I have learnt so much from her.
I'm guessing that's either not the case in Canada or their influence is much less, based on the official inclusion of "or alternatives" under milk and meat
As far as I know, our Canadian Food Guide is pretty similar to the US one. The inclusion of "alternatives" is new and likely a product of public pressure.
@@Lionforaday A new Canadian food guide has been drafted and is set to be released this year. Apparently the dairy and meat industry is upset because they were refused to be met with regarding the development of the new guide and, as far as I know, dairy is no longer considered its own food group and there is an emphasis on choosing plant-based proteins. I was part of the public consultation process, though I have not seen the finished guide to be released. There have been a ton of news articles about this though if you are interested in learning more! I'm so excited!

I first heard about the plate method in a nutrition class I took years ago. It’s what helped me realize my stomach condition did much better when I ate more fruits and vegetables, which eventually lead me to becoming vegetarian, then to becoming fully plant based.
Nice video Sadia! I wanted to share with you a little thing. I am an Indian and in India, the plate is called "Thali". When you order a 'Thali' even in restaurants, you get something similar to what you mentioned in this video. You get curried vegetables 2 or 3 different varieties (in small portions, together they are enough as half of the plate), 1 small bowl of daal (lentils), 1 or 2 chapatis (wheat tortillas but a little small in size) and a small portion of rice. Also buttermilk or curd is served with "Thali" in order to digest everything. Same is the traditional way of eating at home. I try to eat as balanced diet as I can and also I try to implement the same for my child. But I cannot manage to make whole "Thali" (plate) for both lunch and dinner. So its managed half and half during both meals.

You're lucky that your guidelines specify milk and alternatives and meat and alternatives! The official guidelines I studied told that humans have to eat animal derives products to be healthy. And that delayed my transition to veganism with quite a few years... In the end I did my own research and shortly I'll celebrate my first veganiversary. And that's why I love to share veganism - to help people and to raise awareness.

ethically u might be uncomfortable but naturally, nature made us meat eaters. Its not the protein that's the issue that guidlines tell u to have meat its because of B12 which is extremely important for humans without which u lose muscle, mobility n any kind of brain power; including memory lose, brain fog, overwhelming. to keep u sane n moving u need to eat meat naturally but if u dont want to then go for supplements. but its good to be conscious about what u eat n how it impacts environment n our body with least foot prints. sorry for my lack of punctuations :(

I was actually b12 deficient . Because of this reason I was afraid to go vegan. Even though eating animals didn't help. So I switched over to being vegan. I take a b12 supplement when ever I remember but now I feel better then ever, physically and mentally. We do not need meat! Been vegan for 2 years now! :)

I've used this method for a long time now....ever since I was erroneously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. (I have type 1....long story, but lost down to 98 pounds and still needed insulin). I find it really helpful to have a simple visual. I've also studied nutrition (on my own, not at university) for years. Love learning!

the second sunrise I just soak them overnight. Literally before I go to bed, I put the oats in a bowl and cover them with water. Don't measure the water, just make sure the oats are covered. Then I drain the oats in the morning and cook the oats in a little almond milk. It's hard to describe all the effects of doing this. I feel like I can digest them soo much better and in turn I feel a lot better. I didn't know if I would notice such a difference, but it has been a game changer for me. Plus after you soak them, they cook up lickety split and not the usual 30-40 minutes. Another bonus. I hope that helped.

From experience. Run some blood work after around a year of being vegan. Personally I found out that I am not absorbing Vit. D and Vit. B12 supplements which kind of wrecked havoc into my body. Try not to think about proving anyone wrong, it is all about finding whats best for us :)

@Ayluh A Hey I totally agree; veganism does not have the answers for optimal nutrition! My friend became a vegan and she can cook, but what she makes for her "healthy" vegan foods and plates is really nice looking, but I personally can't eat it it's so gross, dry, over cooked and veggies incorporated into a patties and it's just the worst kind of meals possible. Veganism can work, but without SOY, SOY, SOY in vegan patties, soy this and soy that; vegan food is so over-processed it's very fake. I get our meat industry if you look into that fucking sucks! I'm into eating meat, but what the cows are fed and how they are treated is fucked up!
@Michael Lenelle She literally promotes keeping the highly processed foods to a minimum on her channel. Also, do you leave this type of comment on nonvegan channels that also promote keeping the processed food to a minimum. Because Ive watched some of those channels and they show the same if not more processed foods.
And, processed does not always equal bad

I follow almost every piece of advice you offer on this channel, but I have a question about something I’ve been struggling with for a while now. I learned a few months ago about food combining for digestion. For example, “always eat fruits separately” and “don’t eat grains with proteins or starchy carbs.” What do you think about this ideology? from your education, is there any validity to it? And what is your opinion on monomeals, or eating as few ingredients together as possible to increase nutrient absorption?

I would also love your thoughts on this topic! I eat WFPB (have for years), but digestion has still been a challenge. Food combining is something I've been loosely trying to implement, but I would like to know if there is compelling evidence that this is not necessary for good digestion.
@@Johanna_reads you can find the answer to your question on the book called " FIT FOR LIFE" by Harvey Diamond, which is the best seller book in the US. It answers a lot of questions. Eat fruits before meal because, No milk because ..., etc. etc. ; ) Also the book "WHOLE" written by the author of "CHINA STUDY" will help you too.

This is very helpful! I sometimes struggle to get a meal that is balanced so I don’t get either bloated or hungry after an intensive chewing session 😂 This video cleared up a lot for me! I only struggle to categorise the foods like is the potato a vegetable? Are chickpeas grains or fall into the protein category? 👀 I feel a bit dumb but I’d make use of some enlightenment! 🍄
Hi, chikpeas are proteins. Like lentils, beans, peas. Buckwheat, kinoa, millet, rice, corn, oats, wheat, rhye, amarant, barley etc are grains. Potato is a starch vegetable meaning it is not very nutritious. Other vegetables are more nutritious like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, celery or parsley root, beetroot etc.
@@margaritakortsenshteyn6044 I know this is an old comment, but potatoes are extremely nutritious, they're just not green and we slather them in oil so people get them confused with "bad" starches.

I went vegan in January but I was not balanced and I was not getting enough nutrients (and you could tell because I was always tired and was losing weight). I had to stop. But last week I decided that I would try again with a better mind set. After watching your videos (and a few other random ones) I think I'm set and I am so thankful for your videos! Glad you're doing your research! If you haven't heard this yet, I'd recommend tracking your calories for a few days at the beginning if you can, because it's really easy to under eat when you first switch from an Omni to a vegan diet. Best of luck ☺️✌️

I want to transition my family but my sons have severe nut allergies, and with their autism they only eat certain foods. I'm allergic to avocados 😞.How can I incorporate more fruits and veggies in their diet or at least gradually introduce the idea? Suggestions welcome. Thanks #newsubbie
honeybee0503 i like making a cheese sauce out of cauliflower, carrots, and potatoes! You can also use tofu for extra protein. Of course you also have to add the typical seasonings- salt, pepper, garlic, lemon, nooch, etc. Making veggie tots could be helpful too! Or adding some veggies like beets and spinach to fruit snoothies!
u dont have to force urself, ur body will guide u.. u can slowly transition, by adding and testing 1 veggie or fruit at a time. dont give ur body a shock of completely changing its sources
Whenever nuts are discussed, find a seed or legume alternative :) This includes the butters too! (Like sunflower seed butter)
As for alternatives to the avocado, it depends on what you're using it for... Like instead of guacamole dip, you can dip in hummus instead. You could probably make a savory-tasting chia seed spread/jam instead, if a recipe calls for using mashed avocado as a spread... like on a sandwich or something.
There's plenty you can do :) I recommend looking through the PUL website to find really good recipes. There are other really good vegan recipe books, too, that have all kinds of great ideas for replacements/alternatives.

honeybee0503 Oh She Glows (blog and cookbooks) would be another good resource. Her second cookbook is a staple in our home and it has tons of substitution recommendations for nut allergies and others. She has young kids and has a kid-approved tag that might be a good place to start on her blog.

I can't use canned legumes, even with rinsing them, they hurt my stomach, I always have to do the soaking and cooking myself to be sure they do no harm. When you are sensetive, canned foods realy are not the way to go, if you have no trubble, than why not ^^

Piyush Uniyal I am not sure, but I would suggest researching the topic from different sources (for example, the U.S. government's recommended guides may push for dairy more than another country's). If you have access to Google, there is a section that can lead you to scholarly articles (make sure they are peer reviewed, so that you know that they have been scrutinized in the field)

Śūnyatā Eight I think the idea is that people don’t got as much calcium purely from plant sources as they may think. Like someone previously said, countries have different suggested recommendations for calcium. If you’re eating a diverse diet with an emphasis on veg over fruit, you’ll likely get a majority but not meet the actual recommendation. Or you can try to eat at the recommendation but that would be less intuitive and risk feeling limiting. Fortified foods and milks on the side would bridge the gap.

Mariam Trgt - I too would love to know about her teeth. Since eating more fruit and veg, I find my teeth have become very sensitive and I worry if the acid is dissolving my enamel? I always use a stainless steel straw when drinking smoothies to avoid this, but my teeth are hurting a bit. All the vegans I follow on RUclips all have amazing teeth, so Sadia, if you can help us out here, please do give us your tips or make a toothcare video.

You are right about being concerned about the acid. I gianed a lot of tooth sensitivity in the latest years. Maybe lack of hygiene during the day, acids from fruits too long in the teeth without rinsing or cleaning and most of all... Bruxism.
Vitamin D will help you keep your teeth healthy. And vitmain K. But sensitivity does not go back...

Your content and lifestyle is something that I aspire. I am a physician but its true that diet and nutrition have not been taught in medical school.
