So sorry this was late, LOVE the music in 86 but youtube copyright does not so unfortunately some sections of audio had to be altered! On the final stretch now so many emotions 😭
If you're mad that you have to wait until next episode to get answers, then you'll be shocked to know that for us watching this week to week while it first aired had to wait 86 whole days until we finally got episode 23. It was painful, but man was it worth it.
I will never forget the moment. Expecting some sort of recap before the intro started... But they didnt want to spoil a thing. So an old fashioned intro start to make you yearn and get hype for what followed. And man did it ever deliver perfection.
If you’re curious as to why or how Lena is there, it’s because the squad has slowly been making their way back to the Republic where the Morpho has situated itself. You can see hints here and there from previous episodes like the ruined flag of San Magnolia, as well as the fallen statue and signs. And that field of Lycoris radiata? The same field Spearhead had previously passed by during episode 9. So in a way, everything has somewhat come full circle. 86 symbolism for you.
@@ErisianRomantic yeah, both videos are great. Kinda hope she watches it as well coz there’s so much detail you miss out on the first watch. Granted I had an advantage coz I’d read the LN beforehand😅
Regarding why Shin didn't reveal his identity to Lena, he has fought for the majority of his young adult life. Everything Lena knows of him and the other Eighty Six revolves around their oppression, suffering and war. When he meets her, he wants to it to be in a location that would show her that he is on the road to overcoming these obstacles and that a better future lies ahead for all of them. Also... he just wants to look snazzy when they first meet in person.
Shin doesn't want her to see him while he's a mess...because he just trauma dumped on her thinking she was a random woman in the middle of nowhere. To him, he probably felt it was a bad look, although we all know Lena wouldn't care because she's a sweetheart. He would want her to see him at his healthiest though, which he's now motivated to be.
I'm a strong proponent of "if a character dies, don't bring them back because it cheapens their sacrifice", but I'm also a big proponent of letting the audience have a happy ending sometimes. It was very cathartic for the core characters of Spearhead to survive this mission after so many flags. I've been a fan of mecha and war stories for almost thirty years, and I've been upset and frustrated at many stories along the way (I hate evangelion with LITERALLY all of my heart), but I would probably put 86 up there with 1917 as one of the best war stories in the contemporary era. I would put 86 next to Gundam Witch From Mercury as one of the best modern mecha anime. Sometimes, just sometimes, people live. That's all I really needed from 86
None of them are shown to have died tho. They just get separated during the combat mission I never got the feeling, watching this for the first time, that they were killed
The "battlefield" Shin is referring to is more so the one within his own mind which was portrayed in that opening sequence with the silhouette representing the side of his psyche that keeps telling himself that he has no value, no purpose, and no reason to live despite the memories of everyone in his past telling him he is loved, appreciated, and has value and purpose. He wishes to find resolution to that internal conflict before meeting with Lena.
The black Shin, is the inner thoughts of his PTSD and Survivors Guilt. The thoughts about that why he is the only one to survive and everyone else dies around him. Wondering that he should die anyway and have no one remember him. The word “remember,” always comes up or even “I won’t forget.” Lena doesn’t know what Shin looks like even though Lena has the photo of the entire Spearhead Squadron, but she doesn’t know the faces, only the voices from the devices (PARA-RAID). When Lena activates the Device on her neck and it connects not just Cyclops, it also connects to Shin. When hearing her voice and finally realizing who it was, Shin was surprised and happy inside that she is alive. When Lena said, “You survived and made it here, I think that’s something you should be more proud of.” Shin finally cries not the cries of sadness, but the tears of acknowledgment of him being alive, and that he deserves to live. That is what Shin wants, The acknowledgment to survive and to live that’s all he has been wanting the acknowledgment of being alive, and he has the right to survive. Every time episode 22 comes up I cry every single time when Lena talks to the pilot (even though we know Shin, but she doesn’t know) The music you’re hearing is called “ Voices of the Chord,” by Hiroyuki Sawano. The one part when she says, "proud of," the one part of the song connects like it just hits you with a bunch of emotions. That piece of music always makes me cry when hearing it in Episode 22! To make the Anime for meaningful, with some of the delays, it took 86 days for this Anime.
10:05 not sure if you realised it but Cyclops sees Shin's mark and recognises it as the mark of Undertaker/realises who he is, but Lena doesn't look for it/doesn't see it, maybe because she's thinking that he must already be dead
Lena knows that his call sign is Undertaker, but she has never seen his mark: the headless skeleton. So afaik she had no way of recognizing it. Even Cyclops says that Lena has never seen it.
7:11 In the anime , it's less prevalent , but his voice was really not clear through that broken speaker. 7:21 This moment of Shin recognizing the voice.Almost always gets to me weeping. 15:38 Yeah. Waiting 86 days for the last 3 episodes was pretty much a living hell for us people who adored this show. To see Shin recognize lena and yet not introduce himself to her? Is sure you got to watch the next episode right away. Most of us screamed and ranked about that for a week.
A few episodes ago you asked how Shin could have lived through all that without being broken. At the time I wanted to say something that would have been spoilers. The answer is he didn't, Shin is incredibly broken. I think the second half of this cour is questioning if he's broken beyond fixing. Even if he's only at the start of the path to recovery the answer is no. While I was watching this the thought occurred to me that what if this wasn't Shin who beat the Morpho but some random Giadian soldier and he's just very confused why Lena has a drawing of a pig lady.
This episode for me is basically almost perfect. The only minus point is because a little thing that stops Lena to recognize Shin, which in the anime isn't really portrayed that well. In the novel she can't recognize his voice because the comunication system of his Reginleif is pretty damaged after the fight with Kiri . Other than that everything is perfect. 🙌
@@TheRoleplayer40k You don't need to speak Japanese to hear distortions. That's just Shin's voice going through a radio speaker with basically 0 level of interference, that's it. In that scene is more surprising she can't recognize his voice hearing how clean the signal and the voice is.
You’re incorrect They share each other’s hearing perception (as one link version) So they’ve heard each other’s voices as if through the ears of the person speaking ‘The Para-RAID system allows for the transmission of the senses, from sight and sound to even emotions.’ It would even be possible, theoretically, to taste food through someone else eating it The reason Lena doesn’t recognize shins voice is it is coming through heavily distorted on the loud speaker (and she thinks he’s dead so wouldn’t make that connection anyway) They can’t hear each other’s thoughts. You can think on the para-raid and not have those thoughts heard by the receiving party Shin, possessing this ability naturally, breaks some of the rules of the improvised device tho, such as with legion voices
if only standing up and saying how you feel actually worked and didn't just get you into trouble, at least this time you had happy tears for the most part!! great episode I'm sad its going to end.. I also had to keep watching so I skipped ahead of you already while you were at episode 11.. I love watching and listening to you
This Season covers books 1 to 3, the Prologue of the story. After this, just go and read books 4 to 12... they're even better! It got leaked that production for Season 2 is planned for a fall 2025 or 2026 release.
If you need a new show with amazing characters and worldbuilding, The Expanse is always a great option. Awesome Science Fiction, political intrigue, great characters and even some mystery/almost horror elements
I've been looking forward to this. Recommendations for anime; Higehiro, and Tonikaku Kawaii. They're both really good. The first one is kind of dark at times, but it's very good, and the second one, you _need_ to go in blind for, but you need to pay close attention because it is much more than what it seems on the surface.
So sorry this was late, LOVE the music in 86 but youtube copyright does not so unfortunately some sections of audio had to be altered! On the final stretch now so many emotions 😭

Ep 22 and 23 are absolute cinematic masterpieces and my favorite season finale of all time... 86 is so fucking good!
6:21 his voice was distorted by his machine.
8:14 well yes but actually no, sadly she didn't really hear that
