The yellow dragster was owned by Chico Bruchini That was the dragster he won the winter nationals with. I worked him about 25 years ago. He was know as the best Algon tuner in the early days when mechanical fuel injection was the new thing. He was a great guy and only lived to race! He also never missed any events during the race season ever! They used to say he was the... "The King of the slow drags"
I believe the chassis was built by Pete Ogden but I don't know for sure.

I grew up during the 50's and 60's. Spent every Saturday and sometimes Sundays hanging out at Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach, CA. IMO, those were the best years to be alive if you were into the hot rod and drag racing scene.

Oh my God!.....Dick Harrell's 68 camaro F/C is the holy grail of this video...the original paint and lettering is mind blowing...look at all the sponsorship lettering on the trunk lid...my opinion would to apply some clear coating to preserve the original paint including the burn marks from the headers. Square cage chassis funny cars of this era are super cool. I would venture to say this car has an OEM style onboard starter as well. I had the pleasure about 6-7 years ago when attending the hot rod reunion in Bakersfield to sit in the original "Goodies Speed Shop" restored 69 jungle Jim nova funny car that won, I believe the inaugural NHRA funny eliminator at the 1969;winternationals, which was also a square caged chassis car. With all that room in that style roll cage chassis I had a hell of a time getting in and out of it...pounding a few brewskis in the morning probably didn't help but it was like dream come true to sit in the very car that jungle drove. The other cool thing is that the owner of this car also had the restored twin sister "Steve Kanuka" sponsored car driven by Clare Sanders....that was a good day!!!!😊

I attempted to license in Jr Fueler in 1969, I was 15-1/2 and had saved enough from my paper route to rent OCIR for the day, $25 bucks or $45 if you wanted an ambulance there. It was the only way my uncles would let me drive the digger.
The reasons the cars were that short in length was so that they fit into a home garage. One of my uncle's owned Pomona Race Cars and the first thing he asks the buyer of his dragster frames was how long was his garage. This is Anaheim, it's in Orange County California 1968. 2 streets over lived the Worsham's. They would leave the funny car body out on the front suburban yard, sometimes for all night. We didn't have no shops like they have today, we had a toolbox and a station wagon.

I can’t thank you enough for the excellent video and sharing your extensive knowledge.. In the early ‘70’s, my girlfriend’s brother, Alan Jaynes, worked for Gary Ormsby, the top fuel champ. Hearing you describe the cars reminded me so much of Alan, a talented man and a great guy . Thank you !

Until now, the only Hot Rod Reunion I knew is the one in California. I REALLY appreciate this vid which I watched beginning to end. Assuming the trip is possible, I know where I will be next Father's Day weekend! One comment, there is no way in the world I could build a "cackle car". While probably (LOL) too old to drive, thinking a volunteer might enjoy 5-second trips down the track.

Truly love that you are into the old nostalgia stuff love your vids. And love fact you spend it with your dad. Mine had me into since birth. Lost him 2001. He famous words while he worked on all my race cars " you need see how im doing this not gonna be here forever " we actually owned 1969 woody Gilmore dragster the original. " foolish pleasure " car. Now a old racing friend in Brenham tx named Quince Hitt has it. It still has the original 1969 hillborn injection set up on it. Sent it to them to set it up for 60% nitro and they wanted the car and set up to display. Its the one Jim Tuttle had them build for the motor in the car. It was a texas car all its life. 60s 70s were the greatest times for drag racing. Owners and crews were all working on it. Most for free not 3 diget numbers. And just about anyone with job could go racing. Lol. Its just to over done and over corporate for me now. Watching your vids make me remember how fortunate we all were to be apart of that. Ty

Brilliant video and very informative on the history. It is interesting to see so many Anglia's that made it to the USA. Here in the UK they are still a very popular class of racing with the Outlaw Anglia's with some cars now hitting 200mph. I went to the Hot Rod reunion before Covid when it was at Famoso. I agree it is a must see meeting. We have the Dragstalgia meeting at Santa Pod raceway which is one of the best meetings of the year.

Thank you very much for the video brother. In 84 (possible 83)I went to the Nostalgia Drags at Milan Dragway in Michigan and while walking around I spotted a familiar Black trailer at the very far end of the strip. The wife and I walked out there and sure enough it was Big Daddy himself with his wife. I do not remember which swamp rat he had but I spoke to them for a good 15 or 20 minutes. I got a couple autographs some pictures and left him to his privacy.

At 10:25 a look at Dick Harrell's Camaro funny car. It was a time when funny cars actually ran the manufacturers engines. This one is a big block chevy. I remember the Fords ran Cammer big blocks. Then came a time when they all realised the HEMI was the way to go.......There were big complaints from the Mopar camp. Imagine a Camaro running a Hemi and winning a race and the announcer would yell, "Look at that Chevy go !"........Lord have mercy !!

Tire technology progressing is what "killed" gassers. The nose high stance, moving the wheelbase forward and engine height/setback were all attempts to get traction with the primitive slicks of the day. As tires progressed, front ends came down and there was no longer a reason to move the axles forward.

Starting at 19:15 it does my heart good to see Reid Whisnant's Pro Stocker from the early days. In 1970 and 71 the Hemi cars were unbeatable. So unbeatable that Grumpy Jenkins held true to his name and went to NHRA and got them to give all BUT the Hemi cars a .5 lb less per cubic inch weight reduction per cubic inch. The Hemi cars had to run 213 lbs heavier that the Chevys and Fords. It finished 1972 for Mopar. It was bad enough that Chrysler corp (MOPAR) boycotted NHRA.......It was awful...........It did allow the Pintos and Vegas to dominate with small blocks. The weight advantage made the class Chevy, Ford, AMC (Wally Booth) ..........No Hemis..................!
