- Nearly Abandoned Newtowne Plaza - Statesville, NC. Enjoy a look around this shopping center that once had a Harris Teeter, a bank, laundromat, dry cleaners, a J-R store as well as a movie theater and restaurant. Only a couple of businesses remain in this old shopping center. The rest have been left to decay especially the bank and the J-R store.

just that side of town lol, walmart and downtown are pretty nice and growing. they just left the mall area and empty hell hole...
@@williampetty5859 I live on that side of town. It’s nice. But to be honest there isn’t really anything out that way in terms of shopping other then the few shops and Walmart’s.. but that and the food places not really too much out there I want a mall.. 🤷♀️
@@carlalapish8116 I lived on the bellfarm side of town growing up. I miss the mall when it was in the 90s (childhood). We def need something new there. People in charge of the town wanna charge too much, can't wait till someone gets on ball.

I grew up barely over a mile down the road from Newtowne. This shopping center was the main place to shop other than downtown until the mall next door opened June 1973. I was born August 1973. The bank was a credit union. When it closed, it became an optical store and then a cell phone store before being abandoned for good. Where Dollar Tree is now was Eckerd Drugs. Where Rack Room is now is where the Harris Teeter was originally in the shopping center. It moved to the newer building when I was in 5th or 6th grade around 1985. The deli was directly when you walked in and the office was located between the front doors. Glutton's was one of the fancy restaurants in town and had been there for most of the history of the shopping center until it closed. Golden Dragon was one of two Chinese restaurants in town for the longest time. There was a mini golf place with two courses behind the JRs. JRs was a closeout store. Though it was known for cigars, they brought in perfume to give women something to shop for and then the other products came in to play. Due to the poor condition of the building, they moved to Mooresville. I am not sure if it is still down there. Before that space was JRs, it was Korvette's, King's, and Roses. At the end of the plaza was a little shack that made keys and sharpened knives. Beside of it was Village Inn Pizza's original location in an A-frame building. The new location is a 1/2 mile down the road practically in my mother's backyard. Newtowne Cineme was the first theatre to integrate in Statesville. It became a double screen in 1978 when I was in kindergarten. El Tio's opened when I was in 5th or 6th grade. The interior looked like you were in Mexico. The hotel was Hampton Inn when it opened. On the side by Starbucks there was a Curtis Mathis store where my uncle worked.
I was born in 96 I stay about a mile away I'm on East broad Street everyday and I never knew it use to have so much life compared to what I see today Statesvilles going downhill
Used to be a very busy area for shopping. Seems strange to see malls and businesses go out of business. We loved malls growing up.
My wife and I used to go to that theater when we were dating in 1984.Village inn pizzas original building was beside it.I see they’ve torn it down.Great video!
I worked at that Harris Teeter in the early 90’s. I was in high school!
My parents retired to Statesville. I attended a number of films at that theater, and I believe there was a miniature golf course behind it. Few things are sadder than an abandoned miniature golf course.
The decay of the old can certainly give a geezer like me a melancholic feeling. I stand still and the world rushes on past. Standing still is an excellent way to observe.

That's definitely the ultimate goal with this community! At the end of the day, all places deserve to be documented imo!

I just cringe over all the earth space that was taken up for concrete and stores only to be abandoned. Wild life habitat ruined.

My cousin worked at that Harris Teeter for years and I did briefly.
Even the multiplex theater that replaced this theater closed right before the Pandemic and a car dealership took over.
That show's that this city is worthless. We need more stores and a new mall. But they won't give us either one.
Harris Teeter shut down years ago! JR, Movie threatre, Village Inn Pizza, and some smoller stores. Some as uch as 5-20 years ago. Some much longer! I live in this poor town!
You and me both. And I'm sick of this city not caring. They don't want to give us anything. We need stores and a new shopping mall! All they want to do is give us Gas Stations, churches, doctor's offices, Lawer offices etc. We could use Sam's Club, Best Buy, and whatever else. They did good by giving us a Hobby Lobby because around Christmas is when I go in for Christmas Stuff.
I stopped at J-R store on my way down to Florida on vacation, easy access to I-77 which made it nice, was disappointed for sure when it closed in 2014, was heading down for vacation May 2015, swung in the parking lot and discovered it had closed 😢

I stop over in Rock Hill SC overnight on my way down to Florida and seems like a lot of small towns / cities along the I-77 corridor are struggling
I live here everything is dying on this side of town. The mall is empty and falling apart too. So many empty buildings
I remember that the Harris Teeter closed around 2002. I belt the person or company that owned the property wanted to double the cost of the monthly rent. The store was closed and two were built in Mooresville. Harris Teeter had a lot of competition from Food Lion and WalMart.
It was actually 2005 when it closed.

There's an abandoned putt putt / mini golf corse directly behind JR'S, the mall next to JR'S is mostly abandoned but you can still go insude, all other buildings in the mall parking lot are mostly abandoned, there is an abandoned estate behind the mall, and downtown statesville has the historic Vance Hotel that is also abandoned
The putt putt course is only grass and dirt now. They removed everything
If he would’ve gone behind the mall when this video was made, he could have possibly seen the estate, however it caught on fire and they tore down the remains :(
Hey again, Wallie...I remember the Newtowne Plaza, barely, because of its location near Signal Hill Mall and I-77. In fact, at one time, Shoney's Restaurant had been right in front of the Plaza for years, before they finally shut down due to the lack of business and the company's downturn in fortune. Talking about the JR Tobacco Outlet (which I'm surprised shut down completely in Statesville), JR was actually known as a tobacco shop for a while, but until recently, had also offered clothes (including Wrangler Jeans and imitation fur jackets), some knickknack type gifts, cosmetics/colognes, books, and even a little bit of various foods. What locations that JR still has open (including my hometown of Burlington, NC) now only offer tobacco/cigars, and even wine, a far cry from the days when that store had customers coming in by the dozens (the cheap cigarettes did help, true). And as far as Harris-Teeter (as we call it here, "Tweeter"), it's a Charlotte-based grocer that is a little pricier than some around here, but now moving into larger stores to be even fancier (with wine bars, snack bars, and so on), thanks to its new partnership/ownership by Kroger (which oddly enough, moved out of North Carolina, due to its pro-labor stance). But it's still a shame when a big center like that has to rely on a furniture store, Dollar General, and Rack Room to keep the area going.

I miss the J-R store for sure, stopped there on my way down to Florida on vacation, loved the walk in humidor, what a selection of cigars they had, stocked up on cigarettes going down and back
I think the J-R store closed in December 2014, moved up north to a new location in Mooresville NC
they did but Mooresville is south of here and the new one is TINY nothing like what the one in Statesville was

Yes, there used to be a Harris Teeters there, also a movie theater, and Mexican restaurant called El Tio’s, a Village Inn Pizza Parlor, which was torn down a few years ago, and also a putt putt course, I used to play on when I was in highschool back in the early 80’s. Once the Walmart area took off, in another part of Statesville, all the stores there near the Signal Hill Mall saw less and less business. The JR outlet is now in Mooresville, NC. The Newtowne Shopping Plaza used to be busy, once upon a time, but now there’s nothing left. I was in each and every one of those businesses at one time or another, and I agree, it is really sad to see those places abandoned and kind of forgotten. Thanks for doing the videos, I really enjoy them. I worked in Statesville for over 25 years, and lots of the places that used to be there, are gone now, I’m glad there’s still a few of us who remember them with fondness!
This whole shopping area along with the Signal Hill mall are now for sale. I'm praying they sell fast so Statesville can start to grow. Years ago we were named the "Crossroads of the Future" and due to poor management, local representatives and elected officials Statesville has been stuck in the past.
I watched Aladdin movie when it came out in 1992 in my second grade school year at that theater. Its sad to see this.
Yay, I finally get to share some trivia.
Those red signs are for first responders to give them a quick glance at how safe an abandoned building is to enter in case of an emergency.
- A solid red square with a white border indicates the building is up to code. Most buildings that have been abandoned fairly recently will have this sign.
- A red square with a single white slash indicates the building is not up to code, or has otherwise significant interior hazards, i.e. mold, falling roof tiles, etc.
- A red square with a white "X" indicates the building is structurally unsound and should not be entered unless there is someone inside in need of rescue. These buildings may have a partial/total roof collapse, sinking foundations, unsound walls, etc.
My guess is that JR store may have a much bigger problem than just mold if it has that sign on it.

Didn't know Kroger ran that brand! Knew of many others like Kingsoopers, City Market, etc., but then those are in my area unlike Harris Teeter. Explains why others are saying how it's rare to see, seeing Kroger doesn't close stores very often!

Jr's has been closed just a few years, theaters has been closed for 20 years and 2012 is about right for the Harris teeter used to be a pizza place near the theater they just moved 10or15 years ago I think the place next to the grocery store was a nightclub it's been gone for 25 year I think the Mexican restaurants been closed for about 10 years and the Kmart just closed within the last year or two
Also the bank and cleaners and laundromat been closed for probably 30 years

I remember shopping at that Harris Teeter back around 03. So sad to see that JR store in such disrepair, I have such fond memories of that store! Also had one of my first dates with my ex wife at that El Tio restaurant too!

Harris Teeter has stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia,Georgia, Florida, Delaware, Maryland and Washington DC. as of January 2021.

It was a JR’s, it was super great and unique. JRs had any and everything you could imagine, I really miss that place. They are tearing down the entire property. Unfortunately, Statesville is a dying town.
I don't know if you live in Statesville but its far from dying. Its actually growing exponentially.
@@ryanbrouillard2926 Over there by Walmart and hobby lobby etc. that might be growing but over by the mall and where Kmart used to be, nothings being developed... they just tore down the marquee and now they are putting ANOTHER car lot. what you called a bank started as an optical center to buy glasses. the Harris Teeter was the newest build in the center, as it used to be housed in Rack Room Shoes,, and Dollar General was an Eckard Drug Store. JRs started as Kings, then Roses (both department stores). El Tio's was Mexican, Newtown had 2 screens. Village Inn Pizza (torn down) was on the side where you opened the door to the theater. Behind JRs was a Putt-Putt with 2 courses.
Roger the bank was built as a bank originally. When the bank closed, it became an optical store.

65 years old, was raised in Statesville.All of these spaces were open businesses and thriving at one time.Parking lots stayed almost full most of the time.The theater was a popular place to go as were the restaurants.JR Tobacco was originally Roses Dept. Store and Roses did very well for years. JR Tobacco did very well when it moved in.They sold many things besides just tobacco.Haven't lived in Statesville for 19 years now and it's very sad to see Newtowne Plaza and the Signal Hill Mall,though still in fair shape but mostly abandoned, which also used to have all shops full and thriving,in such sad state of affairs
Before it was Roses it was Kings dept. store, opened in 1967.
We used to stop at JR’s so much every time we’d go to the beach. They sold random things and off to the left they had a smoke area where they sold cigars. I loved going there when I was a kid and hate seeing it dilapidated :(

So that JRs outlets has a movie theater a few blocks down really small that is abandoned and I love it. But that plaza had this small little mall the i grew up eating IHOP in. I love going to this area
It’s all shut down for a while most the time there’s people walking around in it the mall is fun to go and explore as well

I miss all of these stores. I used to work at Harris Teeter. I ised to shop at all of these stores. I still shop at rack room shoe outlet.
Its really sad that Walmart has helped put all these atores out of buisness. Not to mention our economy.

You should stop at the JR that is still open in Burlington North Carolina. It was an interesting store! the one there in Statesville had oddly a ton of New England Patriots gear!! my girlfriend got a couple Patriots T-shirts. She’s a patriots fan it was just odd how much they had.

Yup Harris Teeter years ago! They used it as a furniture place. Only 2 or 3 shops left open. Dragon Golden, Dollar General, and Rack Room Shoes. Up the road the mall is just about abandoned as well. Statesville sucks!

The rumor is everything is to betaken down sometime this year but no idea what will occur if it happens. The highway work has already messed things up and will probably even more if that happens. I agree we need more stores and places to dine. I don't understand why the city and county does not care. I guess they are power hungry and not people friendly as they were elected. Some have been in office way to long!

Harris teeter and Gluttons restaurant was beside it and then the wine maestro was beside it.....I remember in the 60's and 70's Kings department store was where JR's was....El Tios was a decent quality restaurant for a low price and it was attracted to the Newtowne theater which started out as a single movie house and was turned into a double later on......The Village inn pizza place has been torn down .....
Ya know.....in the 70's this was a thriving shopping center.......Now.....Rack room outlet and surprise...dollar general

I live here and watching this video is so fucking depressing this town is just awful. They tear down everything every year. I didn’t even know the dollar general where JR’s used to be closed down until my dad told me last year

Actually they moved the JR's to Moorseville due to problems with the building which is evident by the current state as this building was not abandoned that long ago.

JR's used to be a Kings Department store, similar to Walmart, but before Walmart came to NC
It was also a Roses Dept Store!
I think J&R Cigars closed in 2014 or somewhere around that, but some people said that they were upset that it was closed.

That JR closed around the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020. They did sell everything. I bought some souvenirs and postcards, back when people still sent postcards, there. They ended up relocating to Mooresville but from what I heard they closed. The store next to Harris Teeter was a furniture store, don’t remember the name. Next to that was a restaurant I believe. There was also another restaurant in that plaza called Village Inn Pizza. The place was pretty popular and many people were sad to see it go. The building was an A-Frame building like a Howard Johnson’s. That building may have been torn down, not sure about that one.
The pizza place moved down a exit or two and they built a new theater but it's closed already on the same exit
You should check out the abandoned mansion behind The signal Hill Mall, don't go there at night though, during the daytime the worst thing you may run into is a homeless person but at night there's something much darker that works there,
The house was sold I think two years ago for 1 million. So now someone lives there. I hate to hear how much it cost the person to renovate the place.
