We were getting content on the TLH characters for yearssss before chain of gold, pretty much ever since Clockwork Princess came out. Family trees, snippets, short stories, comic strips, questions about them CC answered on her blog, The Midnight Heir in The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters, etc. So I was going based on what I knew from all of that! :)

I've heard of the Bane Chronicles and a few other books Cassandra wrote with other authors but I didn't think they were super important because they weren't in a series and she was a co-author
@@b.o4788 you can read TLH without reading the novellas if you want but it would help to be introduced to the characters beforehand to make it less confusing bc TLH has a lot of characters. Ghosts of the Shadow Market also has stories that cover Anna and Ariadne’s “past”, Matthew’s “big secret”, and revealed Tessa’s new pregnancy before QoAAD came out. So no you don’t technically have to read them but it helps!
@@RiverLovegood my local library only had the Tales of shadowhunter academy and not the Ghost of the Shadow Market sadly. I'll have to find that book later, I own TLH. Thank you so much for your help and this information! I mainly read novels and I just had been disregarding the novellas thinking they were separate.

It was the first tsc novella and the short story in it The Midnight Heir was the first time we were ever introduced to James Herondale as a character. There’s also The Eldest Curses series which are about Malec. And yes like I said you can read the series without the novellas if you really want but they provide a lot of context since it’s all a part of the same larger story, and sometimes reveal things that tend to come into play later :) Just do whatever you feel like doing and enjoy! ❤️
