    He really could've used a 128i for the conversion to be cheaper & end up with the EXACT same outcome. A 135i can push 500HP+ on the stock engine/turbos/trans but this thing is a different beast & that sound is glorious.
    Basically modern E46 in handling & the e90 in sound/power

      DirtDude117 Correct- I could have saved $5-8k if I had used a higher mileage 128i. I hadnt actually originally planned on doing the v8. I quite enjoyed my FBO 135i for a long time before making the jump. I am building a second one which I will be starting with an automatic 128i.

      David Cargo I strongly believe that the entire purpose of maintaining a niche RUclips channel that is specifically directed toward an enthusiast audience should focus on spreading the content as much as possible to the loyal viewers, I bet you anything the demographics of Drives videos tanked once they started charging. RUclips in my opinion should be free for all to watch.
      And sure, It's only 4 dollars, but that's beside the point, 4 dollars adds up. 48 bucks a year? That's money that could have gone to car parts.

    Nice! The S65 motor has a soul that the turbo sixes just can't match. While the newer turbo cars will have plenty of torque down low, the throttle response and sound of these V-8's climbing past 8,000 will be missed.

    • @MarcoSvizzero

      DC Rising. performance is relative to your intended use. For laptimes the s65 is superior. For straight line and comparing stats online - n54 is better.

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 9 лет назад +8

      Like matt said, it should be fast but not blow your balls off fast. But rather a complete package. Question is, would it not have been 90% as good for 30% of the price if he kept the stock engine and gave it a tune.

    • @MarcoSvizzero
      @MarcoSvizzero 9 лет назад +25

      bingoberra18 - I had actually enjoyed the car for quite sometime as a Full Bolt on 135I before doing the s65 swap. The move was very much a lateral move in power. My goal was not to gain more power but instead change the type of power. NA Linear Instant and much better cooling on the track. The car is extremely balanced with the s65 - surprisingly much more so than with my tuned n54.

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 9 лет назад +1

      Marco Svizzero Well as was stated in the video as well I guess its nice to build the kind of car many of the 1-series owners dream about. My miata only has a quarter of the power so I´m not the one to talk ;)

    • @TheBrokenEclipse
      @TheBrokenEclipse 9 лет назад +8

      Dee Jay There was a really great post about the economic problems that /Drive faced, the production cost simply was too high. The private finances of the hosts are not really that relevant: sure their wages might have been a bit high (though I haven't seen any signs of that) and some of them (at least Matt and Harris) have other incomes than from /Drive. Also at least for Chris Harris the Ferrari FF (the 599 wasn't bought) was "bought" through Ferrari's finance scheme and he stated in a video that it was clearly too expensive for him, but he just had to try it out - even if he had to borrow the funds and for a limited time period.

    Hmmm I have a 1M and just because of that sound I now want to put a V8 in there. But it would have to be turbocharged/supercharged- I couldn't have a downgrade in torque. Need to be able to get that wheelspin.

      There's a chap in the UK who has a 1 series converted to a Supercharged s65 pushing 650hp. Sounds fabulous, I mean really fabulous!!

    As much as I ADORE this V8 M3 S65B40 (following the S54 and S85, one of the best M engine sounds), I don't think the exhaust sounds particularly nice in this car compared to the stock M3. Is it straight piped decat exhaust system? But I guess its primarily intended to be a track-oriented car. To each, their own.

    this is a beast tuned!!! i would personally use a z3 bmw coupe or z4 just for the fact that the 135i has such a small front end... i would think that V8 would be much more balance in a Z3 coupe.

    Great to see a driver car, not just a show car.
    What is the soundtrack at around 7:00 -- the music, not the exhaust.

    Matt, why do your Drive videos look like a TV documentary and your one takes look home made? I enjoy them both, but I'm just wondering why the vast difference? keep up the good work...

    This car is incredible. I wonder how it would compare to the E92 M3 with an M5 V10? Can't recall where I saw that, but I imagine that's an equally crazy car.

    This is real cool. I have actually seen a 1M with a M5 V10 transplant. I saw it at the nurburgring. Was completely insane.
