Esquif has been offering these for YEARS, but most Fishing enthusiasts have never heard of Esquif. The Mallard XL model is a step in the right direction for those preferring stand-alone River Running and such. I'd like to see them expand their skills into making some strictly fishing based hulls, because their T-Formex material is so light, resilient, and stealthy soundwise. I think they've been missing the mark in regards to the market is all.

I agree! The only issue is hull stifness without additional structural tubing. I want a boat like a pickup...no thwarts to climb over, stiff hull, stable and light but great capacity for trips. Playing with mods on a grumman sport boat right now. I had lots of square sterns and freighters and regular canoes. Would like to try the Rangley out some day as well.

Love the Mallard XL. Perfect size and the weight isn't bad.

I looked at all the options and decided on a Sportspal/Radisson canoe 16 foot. Weighs in at 77lbs and can hold up to 1k pounds. Aluminium build and very reliable . Weight with me is an issue and strength.

$3199- sticker shock 😳. It’s a cool idea though. Bird hunters seem to have unlimited throwaway money so they should sell plenty.

I have to ask, was Grumman even a vendor at this show? Esquif seems to be what Grumman would offer if they listened to their customers and looked at the market realistically.

Can the Mallard be set up with oars?

Weight a lot less than my Solo Skiff 👍 but how stable is it

Does it take a 15 in or 20 in shaft motor

Could you do a comprehensive study of speed vs stability of new pedal drives (this may be expensive), but I think it would make for good content. You could make it very scientific by doing a stability test by seeing how much static torque (add a known weight to a pole and push the pole further out until the boat flips; torque = force (the weight) times distance from center of rotation).
For the speed test, you could add the same torqueedo (or equivalent) to all the boats so power is constant and see what boat gives the highest speed for a given power input. (you could just use the drives, but your power output maybe inconsistent between boats). You could look at speed vs power input, to see what might be the optimum pedaling speed is for a given kayak (example: 2.5 mph may only use 200 watts for a hobie, but going 4 mph may use 600 watts, using more than double the power for double the speed).
Anyways, I enjoy your content, thanks for posting!

Kind of already have that data via Bixpy: lddy.no/3lir
We can analyze runtimes and speed with same motor. They have tons of charts showing testing. Most pedal drives top out at 5mph. The difference is the ease at which one maintains 5mph. The Lynx is the best pedal drive I have tested at getting up to 5mph and holding that speed. The Old Town Salty/Malibu PDL is the second best at holding 5mph speed….but has instant reverse. Ive done Vidometer tests on all brands of pedal drives.
For paddle crafts the Viking ProFish Reload did very well for propulsion hull efficiency when compared to others via Bixpy data. Stealth (African Manufacturer) fishing kayaks are even better but hard to find in USA.

Btw….Thanks so much for the awesome comment. I like science too. I’m very comfortable making non-bias claims on best speed, stability, and propulsion efficiency. Have tested so many kayaks. I often record Vidometer data which tells me speed metrics.

@@KayakDIY I agree, I think you do a great job with a thorough analysis of kayaks, which is why I enjoy watching your channel. Also, thanks for pointing me to the bixby data, it's exactly what I wanted to know and a good frame of reference between kayaks, at least numerically.
As for me, I actually own a Seastream Angler PD 120, which I love. I also do computational fluid dynamics for research, so it's always fun to see the practical and applied side of things, such as kayak hydrodynamics.

That is no canoe. It is a take of a rowing Wherry. Paddling it would be a PITA. Sail, row with oars, or motor.
