You know its kinda funny, Lexi says "when its real you cant walk away" to Elena for Stefan. But it was those exact words, that saved Damons life from being killed, and she says those words to Damon in season 4 too. Yes, Stefan gave Elena that necklace, not because of love at that time though. It was to save her from Damon. Yet, Damon is the one who ALWAYS brought it back to her. And the very thing is how she fell IN love with Damon in season 3×1 at her 18th birthday party. She asked him to put it on her, knowing how much he loves her, but he did it. He gave her the one hope for her and Stefan. And thats when she fell for him. But, she always had feelings for Damon even before then. They both were always there for each other. What one lacked in, the other brought to them.
Damon saves her alot, with or without Stefan. And stayed with her through that whole time Stefan was gone and he helped bring him back. Even after klaus compulsion is done, he stayed gone to get revenge against Klaus. And when Klause ordered one of his hybrids to drive down Jeremy, Stefan didnt care, and tells her it wasnt his problem.
