Even the best multi tool can't always save you. To be ultra prepared, just carry a spare bike.
Carry two for good measure! 😂
A few things I've learnt are:
- A bottle in a backpack can injure your back if you fall bad. A guy I know broke his back and is now in a wheelchair because of it.
- Multi tools seem ok but I found the tiny length of the hex keys sometimes won't reach certain bolts properly, and if you try it can lead to destroying the head of the bolt. I took the small chain tool off mine and the torx bit, and just use a set of hex keys that are individual and longer.
most usefell comment hands down
Um... Sounds like I need to figure out a diferent place to put my water bottle
@@THEGAMINGHELP101 same😅😅😅
I just bought some Montane softflasks (the largest they sell is 500ml) because I was sick of the foul tasting bladder and didn't want to land on a hard bottle. The Montane softflasks have no inherent taste. Maybe others do also. /// Update! : the newly received Montane softflasks do have a slight taste, similar to that of my Camelbak bladder but less intense. The taste is masked by a flavoured hydration tab and only noticeable with plain water. Still not ideal, but okay.
I always take a spare tube, had the same one in my pack for probably 3 years without using it. At Cannock Chase I came across a chap with a puncture, no repair kit or spare tube so I gave him mine, helped him change it and sent him merrily on his way. Got myself a pinch flat on son of a chain slapper and had to walk back to my van.
That sucks man.
Great video. I have been asked this question from youtubers on my channel. Most important...some snack to keep you from bonking...There are a ton of really cool mountain bikers who check on stopped riders, but it is best to be self-sufficient if possible...Thank you for being a good community
I did like your duct tape rescue video...now I make sure I have duct tape with me on every ride
The production quality just gets better and better. Thanks Neil!
After a hard crash I‘ll put a first aid kit in my backpack.
I would also recommend to take a smartphone (for emergency and navigation), an ID card and a banknote of a value that would allow us to buy essential stuff to get home - like water, food or to hire a ride. I usually have ID and a banknote inside of my smartphone cover so that it does not take additional space.
Love to see you riding sir. This channel content is helpfull. Hoping to have an enduro bike like yours. Godspeed
The Music and editquality is getting better and better and better! Love it! 😍
One very important tool that Neil forgot is a decent small torch. Unless you can fix a puncture or patch yourself up in the dark when you get stuck out after sunset or have to do it under dense tree cover when the sun doesn't shine bright enough.
The light on my bike detaches and easily doubles as a torch, and actually I'm sure a lot of mounted lights detaches quite easily for charging.
@@Kyle-kc8cw
Same here, but not all of them are quickly detachable, especially the ones for serious downhill. Plus, two is one and one is none when it comes to light sources.
Thank you , for all of the advice !
Any time!
Thanks for the tips love your video’s
Love Eastridge!!!! Old Dogs a personal favourite
Tip (because I wished I had thought about it before), take mini-pliers (like in a keychain-multitool), last week my tubeless mtb-tire punctured and the hole was to big for a plug (I tried), my next plan was to use an innertube but I couldn't get the valve of by hand, I had to ride home on a flat tire! Next time I take a Leatherman Style PS (or something like that) so I can at least use that to get the valve of! So in my essentials:
Pump, Multitool, innertube, plugs, money, mini-pliers, a bit of sealant and tire levers.
Every ride I go on outside of the neighborhood include my phone, water (bottle in a cage and/or a camelback depending on ride length), multi tool, spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, hand pump, pressure gauge, electrical tape, and a tiny first aid kit (band aids, gauze, medical tape, a tick tool, chapstick, and antibiotic cream). Maybe an energy bar or two if it’s an hour or longer, and electrolytes in the summer. Everything but the camelback fits either on the bike frame or in pouches on the bike.
Phones can definitely help you out of a jam.
Great video Neil!
Keep strong GMBN!!
I recently opened such a bag for myself and realized how cool it is when the back is not wet from the backpack)
Love these guys almost got 1k cause of these guys!
I have a edc multi tool and it helps me in every situation and I have a small one up pump with a co2 cartridge inside
Thanks m8!
Love you guys
asked my LBS what to take on a ride ... matches exactly what is in this video :)
Haha neils and Blake are dope. Neil always has good vibes
I did that not too long ago went out with a puncture repair kit thought I was all ready then got one and then realised I couldn’t pump my tire up- luckily i could get to on easy enough but...
Love u guys
Cheers this helped a lot
No problem!
I see your Eastridge again Neil Track behind you if you carry on and go to the left hand side of the black that’s one of my favourite tracks going down and eventually take into the car park
I keep a tube strapped to my down tube now. Because I kept forgetting one in my bag 🤣
After like 5 hard crashes and plenty of dirt in my cuts, I’ve decided to bring antiseptic and bandages
this video can also apply for the gravel rides 🏞
Do you carry these essentials?
Just me and ma bike, nothing extra
Sam Jones what will you do when you get a big puncture in the middle of your long ride
Just my bike and phone.
Everyday im on the bike👍 my mtb is my only mode of transport😍
I posted a video like this 2 weeks ago, it didn't get as much views, I had most of these items covered I even included a face mask for those who ride in dusty, crowded places and commuting :(
Banger
#gmbn hey gmbn you need to check out winter hill and rivington pike near bolton, winter hill decent to Belmont is classed as an extreme route and I would love to see you tackle it as there are many fans of yours in Belmont village.
RE: Punctures, stop faffing about! Rip the inner tube out, and stuff the tyre with grass, it'll get you home.
been there. Drier the better. don't b afraid to stop and repack. even well packed straw crushes down.
often you can use a small zip tie either side of a puncture and at worse, cut it at the hole, fold the ends and zip tie, you'll have a bump but it can be better than grass.
Need that digital jersey 😍👍
😂 this has got to be like the 5th mtb essentials video from gmbn
And like the 5th one where they don't mention a torch. Seriously, do they think we're bats or something?
Good video.
Nice bike neil
Garmin 530... it’s connected to your phone and senses when your bike crashes.. it then textes predefined contacts with your coordinates .... I mountain bike alone mostly so it provides my wife piece of mind if something were to happen.
Nice
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Could you please do a review on Polygon D7?
Bruh bought one of the gmbn jerseys and it was way to big i am 10 and my dad is 45 and it fits him really annoyed because i waited 2 months for it because of corona virus and then dosent fit me, i recommend buying because it is so awesome looking a feels good but just be careful on what size you get if you are a kid
Epic
😅 I go for extra more preparation:
- Tools to tighten up some bolts on the bike.
- two bottles on the bike (total 1.25 L)
- Tube repairkit.
- 2 spare tubes
- 1 pomp on the side of the bottlecage
- 1 spare bikechain
- Nordic pocket saw
- phone + wallet
- 1 tang (very helpful is somecases)
- food (meat/bread/fruit/candybar)
- a map of the local region
- bag of tierips
- little emergency kit
Dang I knew we should have put out our essentials video last week haha. O well I guess we have no choice now we already filmed it. Thanks a lot guys lol. Nice video.
What about a small med kit?
Cellphone, ANGI and bandage for me.
First Aid kit.
Haven’t watched but know will be helpful
you lost me at bum bags are much cooler than rucksacks :D
My essential is a bike.
Music is sick
I swear on my mums life I will subscribe
My essentials are all the protective gear available cos with my lack of skill I'm an accident waiting to happen
Yo
All you need is a bike and a trail
Don't forget a Co2 inflator and a couple of spare cartridges not a lot of space or weight. Still think your a top bloke Neil despite rookie mistake
Do you every run out of air? The only ride I've been on where someone used a co2 inflator, he ran out of air and needed my pump. I have an inflator, but after that experience I leave it at home
Can't say I have 1 cartridge in unit and 2 spares. 27.5 x 2.6 tyre's takes just under 2 cartridges to get my psi. Honestly never had an issue since tubeless needed to use twice.
Hi
Wheres that pump 😉🚵♂️
Ride with someone if you best can. I never ride alone and between me and my buddy we both have what we need if something happens. And when it does we have eachother to help outselfs.
for some reason i thought neil was dressed up in a knight outfit in the videos thumbnail
I have £20 don't really know what to buy but this video helped
gmbn jersey or 4 gmbn stickers make your bike faster 👍
@@curtisf.r6233 very true
For £20, if you don’t have a multi tool, go for it.
Otherwise, a new KMC chain is a good idea, and buy some super cheap missing link things on eBay. They make fixing your chain easy.
Otherwise, going tubeless or buying some spare tubes/patches and a pump is a good idea.
Also, a bottle cage and a bottle is great for longer rides.
Hope that helped!
@@xx-----------xx873 ye cheers I've got most of that stuff .buy I'm just looking through wiggle for things 🤣
@@martinbalman2503
For 20 quid you can also get a Convoy S2+ handtorch.
No quick link?
Hello. What about first aid kit? Is it essential ? Do you have any recommendations regarding it?
Number 1 tip for 1st aid kit. Dont bring anything you dont know how to use.
Then its.
Antiseptic wipes, 2 medium wound dressings ,2 bandages disposable gloves foil blanket. Will cover most things the average person can deal with,
Anything else should be left for professionals, in which case get as much info as possible and take notes , like if the person was knocked out , pains in chest ect.
Jim Bo Thank you!
Im going on a ride right now
Have fun

I wonder why ppl don't like saddlebags. You can buy small one, barely visible - put there tube, multi tool, CO2 pump and rolled piece of toilet paper!
Which bag are you using? I like saddlebags on my daily/travel bike, but on my full sus mtb the rear tire hits the bag even during normal trail riding.. That's annoying and dangerous, but if you have a bag that works, that's great!
It rattles alot
More fails please

Just me that's bothered by the, "an MTB?"
I feel like there just doing the same vids just to get one out every day they should work on longer and better vids and upload 2 maby 3 times a day
2/3 times a day? What are you smoking?
2/3 times a week and different content would be better IMO.
I’m a Halfords Carrera guy that hasn’t been on the bike yet. 😅
