I’m 63, ex-army. I’m so OCD about kit. I feel this inner urge to ride with more bodily freedom. But cannot overcome. CamelBak backpack. 3L bladder. Topeak multi. Puncture kit. Double action Blackburn pump. Marzocchi shock pump (yes!). Stihl folding saw (lot of tree fall on my trails). Swiss Army knife. Two spare tubes. Gorets waterproof. I live in rural France and being self-sufficient is important. I also take a bush knife. Tailored trail map. Paracord. First aid kit. Pretty heavy.
I went to a hip pack/lumbar bag a few years ago, and will never go back to a backpack. Has essentially the same storage, feels better lower on the body, and no sweaty back, which is important since I ride throughout the cool seasons and winter. For bigger back country rides it can take two additional bottles in the side pockets. I find it way easier to spin it around my waist and access it, vs having to unclip and unsling the backpack for access.
In Oregon USA, a frame mounted waterbottle is enough with a small backpack of tools and maybe a raincoat. In Thailand, where we are presently, a 2 liter water filled backpack is a necessity, along with a few tire tools. Some carry raincoat, but tropical heat & humidity keeps you wet with it on or off. LOL :)
I’ve been rocking Deuter packs for a minute, and no complaints. They tend to be simple and uncomplicated, but have every single feature you need nonetheless. And they are fairly well ventilated
Nice commercial for Camelback. Would have been more useful if you would have brought some other brands in. USWE comes to mind. At least you told us up front that it was going to be an add for Camelback.
They literally say in the opening sentence they are featuring Camelbak products since they are a channel partner (sponsor), but that much of what they are talking about applies to other brands too...

It would have been nice though to see differences in things like retention straps, bounce on the trail, etc. when you look at some different brands. For instance, I used to exclusively use camelbak products but didn't like the constant movement of the pack. I switched to USWE because of their different system and it works much better for me. Storage and bladder size are certainly two components to discuss but their are other brand solutions that offer other options that are different... Not necessarily better... But different in form function and philosophy.
99.9% of rides, backpacks and bum bags will be fine to hold your stuff. You can have as much padding and protection, but you'll know about it if you land on one. Store things like your multi tool and water bottle on your bike.
I bought a Mavic backpack several years ago and it's smaller, has a hydration blader , and the shoulder strap compartments etc. Absolutely the best I've bought yet, I gave my Fox one to my son. I usually carry my Topeak Alien3 multitool , some extra rear mech mounts , inner tubes , chain links, and cables, and of course some snacks all in that little pack. Wear it every ride lol. Definitely great for full day rides. Cheers guys!
Depends: bikepark days, short rides - hippack. Longer rides, rides in cold temperature, rides with family - backpack (I can carry extra warming layer, 2nd gloves, tons of snack for kids etc....)
4:52 Yes like Evoc has, but apart from the zippers they won't water in, but the gaps between the zipper gliders definitely will. I've experienced sudden heavy rainfalls so got to test it. 5:10 Nice. I have something similar on Evoc Explorer Pro 30 L. It's great keeps the back cool and nothing hits my back. I only use one backpack, always have what I need, I went for a big backpack so it would fit a tripod, full frame camera, in addition to everything else, and still have some room. Scored it on a nice sale, so got a superb deal. I don't regret it. I also like it has side waist pockets, nice to have gloves in one and phone in the other one. If you like a camera with you a back plate can be good to protect it, I cover my full frame camera with a back protector, keep the camera between Poc VPD 2.0 DH elbow pads which is inside a bag that came with bed sheets, the back plate goes on top. I think my camera should be fine. But it's a bit fiddly.
I got the Evoc Trail pro 10L with back protector. Best mtb bag i ever owned. The back protector has the side effect of keeping the bladder cool. When my current one gets too old I'll buy the same if it still exists. Should take a while though because after one year it's as good as new.
Tsuga eldarado is my favorite hip pack interchangeable 2-3-4L pouches with adjustable stash snaps and hook and webbing straps. The tire buzz guard keeps the tire from catching your pack. Superior quality! HAND MADE In Boone NC (WNC) the belt system is designed after a climbing harness belt it really feels like it’s apart of you and you’re not just wearing something. CHECK EM OUT.
I prefer Hydrapak bladder as they have a zip bag design, which is super easy to fill and close and open without getting water everywhere. I've not tried Camelback bladders, but I probably won't like it.
as a man with no ass I find bum bags difficult. I have an Evoc that is great, but no amount of tightening will stop a bag from sliding down on a rough trail. I still take my $25 generic water bladder back pack instead of my $150 hip pack.
I ride with a pack made by a local Tasmanian company called ‘Henty’ they make a hip pack with light weight backpack straps. It distributes the weight amazingly and poops on any other brand I’ve ever used. I can jump, whip, tech it up and I nearly notice it.
@@gmbntech yep they ship globally. I would definitely get in touch to see if you can get your hands on the ‘enduro 2.0’ model it’s a total game changer! From what I know it’s a pack that many of the medics use at Maydena Bike park (home of Redbull hardline Tassie) lots of handy straps for spares/pumps/snacks/first aid. Plus has 2L hydration pack and it’s got ample adjustability.

Camelbak 3l Mule, 2l Rogue or 1.5 l hip pack depending on ride length.
Torn between the mule and podium, like the mule as i could sling in a throw over in there but its a tad pricey
I prefer Hydrapak bladder as they have a zip bag design, which is super easy to fill and close and open without getting water everywhere. I've not tried Camelback bladders, but I probably won't like it.
They're also really nice to fill. You can either get the zip bag style or a screw top that has a handle for easy filling 🤙
