9/22/22. Yes David , 2day saw another mighty fine video of your attention to detail on this smallish (12 ft w x 20 ft (?) long) cc slab for storage. Inside corner cold joint to existing house. 3 car Garage floor next/another video... Great video showing form set up/fiberglass 3/8" re-enforcement rods on 24" centers using broken brick as 'dobies' to elevate rods to mid-slab position for strength. Stress crack cut was 'off-center' for reasons joining future slab re: pouring new garage floor & driveway. Much enjoy watching as you perform these informative videos. Appreciate the enormous hard work you & team do to bring us these videos. 💪👍👍👍👍😊
Ok I’m doing a 10’x20’ 4” slab as well as a footing 12”x12” for a cinder block grouted retaining wall. I noticed you don’t put down any gravel before you pour concrete. Everything that I research on line says to put gravel down before you pour. But after watching a few of your videos I’m hoping I don’t need to do that. I definitely trust you know what you’re doing so I would like your opinion.
You are right. Just because in other parts of the world you rarely do concrete patios for a number of reasons, from technical aspects to traditions or simply cost (Not being allowed to seal the area for drainage reasons, just because it is uncommon and traditionally you would more likely find pavers, because concrete is only used as a substrate to lay tiles or whatever... I bet there are still numerous other reasosn why things are done different.), why don´t make it look nice where it is a common material. Here where I live in Germany concrete is mainly a structural material. You rarely see it afterwards. Sometimes they use it for roads with high truck traffic. But looking in other places like switzerland around Zurich, they do a lot of visible concrete. (Anyone familiar with Le Corbusier?) Personaly, no matter how "nicely done" I don´t like concrete that much, I would prefer some nice pavers or a wooden deck, but hey, thats personal preference and anyone is free to disagree with me on that one.
I'm based in the northwest of the UK. I recently had some concrete work done and there wasn't a single person wearing a straw hat involved. I know I haven't had a proper job done. When is Odell coming to the UK?
David, I assume that the concrete is air-entrained since it was pumped. Now, I read in a few places that if the concrete is air-entrained then a wood float would no be the right thing. But, clearly, the wood float (+ wood trowels) followed by the fresno works a treat ... have I misunderstood something ?
Well done! Just curious though why trowel on the sliders twice if you bull floated , Fresno + trowel on a pole?? And what did u spray on the slab with the tomahawk sprayer when finished?
At 3:15 I'm based out of The Inland Empire and have noticed that Victoria Concrete and Day finish with mag floats. I guess it's cause of the freezing. Much easier to just mag float it
Would it be possible to do a 20x24 slab for a carport by oneself? if so how would you go about that? what would it cost to have a cement truck whow up and pour the slab..you can use your area..im in missouri myself.
20 x 24 by yourself would be hard work.. I would make it 2 pours or if you haven't done this before do 3 or 4 pours. The thing about concrete is its not going to wait for. Once it's on the ground. The clock is ticking. When I do concrete by myself I limit the pour to 200 sq ft
Hey brother. So I have never run a Bull Float, or a Fresno. But I have a 15' × 30' Backyard Patio Slab that I want to pour in April 2023. I can form and rebar myself. But I'm scared to pour and finish. What do you suggest? I'm extremely handy, with a background in Carpentry.
Why did you start finishing with wood bull floats & wood trowels versus mag or aluminum? Was the edger & last trowels you used both steel? Does the tools material really make a noticeable difference and/or what are the worst tool choice mistakes to avoid? Thanks, Tommy
I’m a newb and just did my first footer this morning on our bedroom addition. What kind of mix did you you use for this? We are getting ready to redo our front porch slab on a 1940’s house and this looks a lot different than what we got today.
Yes, but Roman Concrete gets stronger by the year... American Concrete gets weaker by the year... The Romans used Volcanic Ash, a Hydraulic Lyme and Sea Water to make up the concrete. It is something like that... That made it very strong... And gets stronger... Actually it is Amazing!!
Hello. I was wondering if you had any tips, or could make a video showing how to make a concrete base for a fence. Now to clarify, I'm not taking about for each post. I'm taking about making a trench or something inbetween each post that would be maybe 6 inches wide, and maybe 2 foot deep(or below the frost point in the ground). The purpose would be to deter dogs from digging under the fence. Or even an alternative using cinder blocks instead if that might end up an effective but cheaper method. Having them running the entire length of the fence.
My only question is why isn’t there an expansion joint up against the wall of the house? My understanding is that concrete expands and contracts am I wrong?
Great video. Can you please list the names of the equipments you’re using for us and where to buy them? I am trying to do my drive way watching to video.
I don't know if you will reply but I figure no better person to ask than you, love the content btw. If I'm pouring a small 4x4 slab are 1x4's adequate for forms instead of the usual 2x4?
Hi Mr.Odell! Love your video's. I have a question, we placed forms to build a driveway and it's that time of year that oak tree's drop seedlings and many of them dropped in the place to be poured here in 2 weeks. Will these seedlings needs to be picked up or do you think these seedlings have no chance of propagating and destroying the concrete in the near future? Thanks!
How come you don't wet set the expansion joints vs coming back to saw cut? Just curious as I know they both do the same thing. (I'm guessing you can get straighter lines saw cutting)
I want colored concrete on my patio, garage ,driveway and front steps. I know the ready mix company will mix the bags into the truck delivery. Does this need to be sealed or finished after the standard pour and leveling?
Dave i'm the bay area theres a lot of rain right now and its supposed rain for 2 more weeks how long should i wait for the soil to dry out before i do any concrete work my soil has clay in it and do you know of any good concrete guys out here in nor cal
I think a lot of people like the DIY aspect that can be involved with concrete. Thou I have to say some of the tools in use are terribly expensive for somebody that is more of a diy. that may just do a few pads. May not be a bad idea to have a video focusing on getting a good slab down while also not having to spend 1-2k or more in tools to do it. I guess the size of slab plays a lot into what tools you are going to use.
Newb here fellow teachers of the trade?? Why wasnt 2-4" of 3/8crushed stone under this slab was the ground stable enough or not going to see stress of cars and heavy weight? Not sure thought that was always the case for slabs. Please enlighten me.
Been watching your videos for a long time love them! I'm still confused about concrete against the house. Like a stucco finish I would imagine it would suck up some of the moisture causing it to bond but the house will move regardless on it's own thus down the line thus I would imagine that would impact the slab. I know I'm wrong because I see this done all the time in other videos as well but I feel like separating it from the house with some type of foam or felt divider would be best long term. Why am I wrong though?
I just poured a pad and used a corner tool to round edges but the edges are uneven with holes and aggregate showing. Pad is dry. How do I smoothen the edge to get smooth edge corner? Thanks

That Mud is Pretty Soupy.. Easier to work with.. No expansion joints?
Do you you put expansion joints next to the foundation walls?
I’m confused. Do you not need to put a gravel base down first?
Great work! Keep the details coming.
Izolacija između zida i novog betona? Terasu od 10 kvadrata radi pet ljudi?
What would be a price for 20x30 slab with depth of 5 inches?
is there a reason you didn't use gravel for the sub base?
Sand is better in this area
Excellent work as usual, but always wondered, how come you don't use a power trowel on your larger jobs?
I do when they get big and I'm short handed
Is that joint center? Hard to tell. If not, is it off-center because you plan to use it to continue the joint when the rest of the concrete is poured?
Yes off-center to fit the big slab
Good work 👏🎉
Did you add slope to the slab? How did you figure that?
1/8" per foot
How come you don't wet set the expansion joints vs coming back to saw cut? Just curious as I know they both do the same thing. (I'm guessing you can get straighter lines saw cutting)
Straighter lines and less people
probably dumb question - but why cant you leave as is after the bull float - why do you need to get back on the concete and mag float it.
Just curious, why did you make a saw cut in the concrete? Is there a certain size of slab that needs one?
