My mother and I share the love of Pheobe Snow and Zap Mama. She gave me Pheobe and I gave her Marie. This song reminds me of how much I love my Mama(s)
How am I just seeing this in 2021? The moment Queen Yéyé Phoebe open her mouth I had to fight back tears!!! I LUV PHOEBE SNOW since I first heard her back in the 70s!!! Then @ 4:59 She blasted that high note and I melted!!! Bowing to this 1st Queen Zap Mama!!!
I've been looking for this EXACT clip for years! NEVER thought I'd see it again. Saw this when it originally aired. I was on clouds before the performance was finished. THANK YOU, 'Mr.ViewX' ... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!!
On this day in 1976 {July 30th} Phoebe Snow performed "Poetry Man" on the NBC-TV program 'The Midnight Special'... One year earlier on June 20th, 1975 she first appeared on 'The Midnight Special' and at that time also performed "Poetry Man"... The song peaked at #5 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Singles chart... Sadly, Ms. Snow passed away on April 26th, 2011 at the young age of 60... May she R.I.P.
2:30 Listen to those background high ( tragically off camera and Minnie Riperton-like layered vocals, "oooo!" Inside the Barry Harris "UH" ) harmonies, CHILLS!!!! True Poetry Here! What a magical, talented collaboration back then! Bless the VHS Recorders of Good Times Audio/ Visual Bliss!

Blown away by how BAD this was. The dancer added nothing, was just distracting. Phoebe seemed to be looking for someone to sing notes she was unable to reach but they sounded horrible and weren't hitting them either. Why did she even perform when clearly not up to her usual level of excellence.
Often times THOSE are the best performances, not polished, nor rehearsed. She can't be 'prefect' at all times, can she?. In any case, I took it to be an impromptu endeavor. I think everyone knows that she's much better than this particular performance indicated. R.I.P. , Ms.Snow.
Ellen Hendrick , I believe a lot of Phoebe’s Spirit was lost when her adult daughter that she took care of who was handicapped passed away. Plus with a great singer like Ms. snow I could not sing with these terrible back up singers either!!!! Listen to some other live performances by Ms. Snow, she sounds excellent!!!
She was fine… it is a piece of live history now . IMO This was phoebe’s famous song & respect woulda meant not messing with it or the words . The style by zap mama didn’t do it justice. It was jarring & distracting even for Phoebe trying to sing the lead on it … Oh and that interpretive dancer? Phoebe looked bemused at times!! But it kinda settled in to a sort of groove . Loved watching her watching them and then she just took back control by doing those high notes at end ….almost like a scream to be released hahaha
A magnificent mother first, a brilliant artist second was the exquisite Phoebe Snow. One o the absolute best of the best.

So obvious the joy and respect the fellow musicians have for Phoebe Snow. Thank you for sharing this with us. It is a gem...

It seemed like I missed something at that time .
Awesome oui?
awesome, but the interpretive dancing stuff is just a tad much.
Needed a Chinese person in a wheelchair to complete the set.
wow would have been a whole lot better had zap mama turned their mikes off.
please dont try to hit notes you cant possibly hit let Miss Snow do her thang
This is racist against Chinese. 😮
