Drew great tips bro. Though I do hip hop. I focus on getting things to sound great with no plugins. When I use plugins, I use them to correct problems in between the tracks. When I started using that approach, my music had come alive.
Also many people think that mixing should make stuff better. This is not the goal of mixing, its to enhance the emotional impact of the song, or make it more engaging with the listener. Many times making tracks sound "worse" or smaller to make them fit in the mix. Trying to make everything sound good is just bad mixing. Michael brauer said something along the lines of "sonically good without soul, is just shit"
After teaching over 500 students, I’ve seen that everyone wants to learn to mix better. But that’s the problem. It’s only 20% of a great sounding song. Spending more time mixing instead of learning to produce, write, ect, it actually starts to make things worse. Like pizza dough. The more you play with it the worse you get. I should have used that analogy in the video haha

I watched this from beginning to end and could not find the answer to how mixing is making my music sound worse.
