Fatehpur Sikri is located about 40 km from Agra. Fatehpur Sikri is a small town in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a famous tourist attraction in Agra. Some of the notable attractions in Fatehpur Sikri are Buland Darwaza and Salim Chisti Dargah.
Made up of red sandstone, Fatehpur Sikri was founded in 1571 by Mughal ruler Akbar. It was built to honour Sheikh Salim Chisti, whose prediction of the birth of Akbar’s son came true.
Fatehpur Sikri is commonly entered through the Buland Darwaza. Buland Darwaza was constructed in 1601 A.D. by Akbar to celebrate his victory over Gujarat. Made up of red sandstone and decorated by marble, it is the highest gateway in the world. The total height of the Buland Darwaza is about 54 meters from the ground level and one has to climb 42 steps to reach the top.
Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture. Akbar's secular religious views and interest in architecture and fine arts has given Fatehpur Sikri a beautiful blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture. Akbar had planned Fatehpur Sikri as his capital, but shortage of water forced him to abandon the city later. Still this city has retained many of the old structures.
One of the prominent attraction in Fatehpur Sikri is the Tomb of Salim Chishti. The Tomb of Salim Chishti was built during the years 1580 and 1581. Here the Sufi saint Salim Chisti, descendant of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti is buried.
Akbar also built Jama Masjid as part of his new capital, Fatehpur Sikri. One of the largest mosques in India at that time, Jami Masjid was built in 1571 AD. The mosque is entered via huge arched door which is beautifully designed and decorated with marble works. The prayer hall has mihrabs with mosaics and glazed tiles on the sides. Similar to the rest of Fatehpur Sikri, the mosque is made of red sandstone. Marble and slate have been used for decoration, and include Persian and Arabic calligraphy. It represents a mixture of Islamic, Hindu, and Jain architecture.
To the east, stands a tomb of Islam Khan I, who was the grandson of Shaikh Salim Chishti. The tomb has a dome and thirty-six small chattris and contains a number of graves, all descendants of Shaikh Salim Chisti.
