Its because he wasn't closing games until after the Astros traded away immaculate grid legend Octavio Dotel. Lidge racked up 94 innings as a reliever in 2004.

I played along at home and listed off my Pirates dominant Joel Hanrahan-to-Jason Grilli-to-Mark Melancon lineage and no joke I managed to accidentally guess the year they were with the team and had their career strikeout years (2010, 2012, and 2014, respectively) with the team when I was trying to remember what year they were playing their most effectively as a closer, which ironically isn't the same year.
Example: Hanrahan managed to put up 100 K's over 69.2 innings of work and only had 6 Saves.
Shit talk the Pirates all you want, but they had an AMAZING stretch of closers over the years. Capps, Hanrahan, Grilli, Melancon, REDACTED, and now Bednar? That's a damn fine stretch of pitchers.
