--------------------------------------------------
"Takeover" is a track recorded by Jay-Z for his 2001 album The Blueprint. The song is a diss track aimed at rappers Nas and Prodigy of Mobb Deep.
This song was the first official LP diss track to publicize directly the hip hop feud between Jay Z and Nas (although there exists several other rap records prior to this featuring disses from both Nas and Jay Z toward each other). It samples the song "Five to One" by The Doors and "Sound of da Police" by KRS-One. The first line in this song is taken from Jay Z's verse in "Celebration" off of the Streets Is Watching soundtrack. The song also interpolates David Bowie's "Fame". Jay-Z originally performed the first two verses of Takeover as an untitled diss to Prodigy of Mobb Deep at Hot 97's Summer Jam 2001. While performing the line "you was a ballerina/ I got the pictures I seen ya" a photograph of Prodigy, as a child, dressed in ballet clothes, appeared on the large screen. Aside from its role in the Jay-Z & Nas feud, Takeover was largely seen as damaging to Prodigy (and Mobb Deep's) careers.
In the second verse, Jay Z alleges that Prodigy (member of Mobb Deep) took ballet classes as a child and mocks Prodigy's small stature. Jay-Z further dismisses Mobb Deep as competition in the hip hop industry by pointing out that his career had more commercial success than they ever would, and dissing Mobb Deep's famous song "Shook Ones Pt. II". Mobb Deep replied to Jay Z in a subsequent LP diss track, but their rivalry has more or less been overshadowed by the rivalry between Nas and Jay Z.
In the third verse (which has 32 bars, while the other verses have 16), Jay Z ridicules Nas's discography (at the time consisting of four albums) and claims Nas has a "one hot album every ten year average." Jay-Z referred to a widespread feeling from many hip hop critics and artists that Nas's subsequent albums after his legendary Illmatic debut were mediocre follow ups, and dissed Nas' famous song from that album "The World Is Yours". Jay Z sampled some of Nas' lines for the chorus of Jay Z's famous song "Dead Presidents II", and claimed in "Takeover" that he sampled it because Nas was using it wrong ("So yeah I sampled your voice, you was usin' it wrong/ You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song"). Jay Z also questions Nas's street credibility and claims Nas has lied or exaggerated about his past in songs, with the lines, "Nigga, you ain't live it you witnessed from your folks' pad/Scribbled in your notepad and created your life/I showed you your first tec, on tour with Large Professor (Me! That's who!)/Then I heard your album 'bout your tec on your dresser."(This is a reference to the Illmatic song "Represent"). Jay Z also ridicules Nas's style, flow, and career decisions, with lyrics like, "Nigga switch up your flow, your shit is garbage/What you trying to kick knowledge? (Get the fuck outta here)" and "Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all/To your bodyguard's Oochie Wally verse better than yours/Matter fact you had the worst flow in the whole fuckin' song..." which "Oochie Wally" is a song by The Bravehearts from the collaborative album QB's Finest, and samples the song in this song when Jay-Z mentions it.
The song initiated one of the biggest and most hyped hip hop rivalries within the industry, and the song was generally well received by fans. At the time, the song's hard-hitting caliber was such that Jay-Z and many hip hop fans had felt that this song could have potentially ended Nas's career. On the contrary, however, the track merely served to reinvigorate Nas' career as he responded to "Takeover" with a diss track of his own, entitled "Ether".
Jay-Z responded to "Ether" with a freestyle entitled "Supa Ugly". Jay-Z and Nas would release other subsequent diss tracks and records referencing the feud, including "Blueprint 2" (from Jay Z's The Blueprint2: The Gift & The Curse) and "Last Real Nigga Alive" (from Nas's God's Son.)
"Takeover" was produced by Kanye West and samples The Doors' "Five to One" as well as "Sound of da Police" by KRS-One. 50 Cent swards Mobb Deep in his own diss song "Piggy Bank", by telling his rival Jadakiss "Jada don't fuck with me if you wanna eat, 'cause I'll do your lil' ass like Jay did Mobb Deep." Coincidentally, 50 signed Mobb Deep to his G-Unit Records imprint a mere few months later.

"So yeah, I sampled your voice, you was using it wrong" is one of the hardest diss bars ever
Except Serch confirmed Nas owned his publishing from that. "All I did was give you a style to run with..."
You made it a hot line I made it a hot song
That is just standard lines from battle raps. That is what battle rap was built on, accusing someone of sounding horrible, accusing them of stealing your style, accusing them of stealing your beats etc. Not to mention, nobody steals anything from anybody if they think it is garbage. Jay Z has always stole lines from everybody. Remember Camron doing Swagger Jacker? In Swagger Jacker he lays a compilation of lines Jay Z has stolen from everybody, and he stole so many lines from Biggie Camron says he needs to give his publishing to Biggie's mom. Then Camron says one of the fuunniest lines ever in a diss track. He says even if Jay Z comes back at him he won't believe he wrote it, and he will probably just steal some lines from James Brown or Frankie Lymon from 1968. Swagger Jacker is basically a diss song without Camron ever rapping, just exposing how much Jay Z steals from everybody, then saying a couple funny things in between listening to Jay Z lyrics he stole from others. Camron did have a couple good Jay Z diss tracks. It is really unbelievable how many lines he stole from Biggie. When you hear just a few of them in Swagger Jacker you start thinking damn Jay Z cannot make a song without using lines he stole from Biggie.
Jay is still paying to this day for trying to make it a hot song. 50% publishing of any printing of Dead President belongs to NaS.
Nobody want to say it, Jay had to sample NaS to be noticed. NaS fathered Jay.
jay spilled tha tea throughout third verse and insecure Nasir fans still crying about it 2 decades after lol. can't handle the truth

True but mainly for prodigy r.i.p.

Jay got ethered. not dancing around it. Kneel and kiss the ring
So this is a Mobb Deep diss and not a Nas diss? How sway? He dissed all 3 of them. And spent A LOT OF TIME on the Nas diss. Cut it out. Ain’t no one tell Jay to mess with Nas when his mother was dying cause Jay always been a jealous of Nas dick rider. Lol.

Illmatic dropped *4/19/94* while Takeover dropped *9/11/01.* That's 7 years 4 months and 3 weeks, it's *not 10 years* ...so we already disproved the bar 🤷♂️
Now *what's the criteria* for a hot album? Commercial success or critical acclaim?
*Illmatic -* 5 Mics in The Source
*It Was Written -* 4 Mics in The Source and went double platinum within in 3 months
*I Am -* 4 1/2 Mics in The Source and sold 470,000 its first week and went platinum within a month
*Nastradamus -* sold 232,000 its first week and went platinum in less than a month
Either way you go, Nas has 3 hot albums in the given time frame 🤷♂️ And I know, Nas debuted in 1991 on Live at the BBQ and that makes 10 years...still don't make a difference, it makes no sense
*Jay Z* debuted in July of 1989 on Hawian Sophie, so he has til July of 1999...
*Reasonable Doubt -* 4 Mics in The Source but it only sold 43,000 in its first week (less than Illmatic). It also didn't go platinum til 2002
*Vol. 1* 4 Mics in The Source but only sold 138,000 its first week
*Vol 2. -* 4 1/2 Mics in The Source and sold 350,000 its first week
So *critically,* Jay has *3 hot albums* ...but *commercially,* he only has *1 hot album* in 10 years. So Jays bar isn't true about Nas in any way, shape, or form...but can be said about Jay 🤷♂️

This in my opinion is one the most criminally underrated diss songs of all time. Ether is obviously the better diss track and one of the greatest disses of all time. Takeover is a classic diss as well and I hate that it doesn't get the respect it deserves and it saved Nas' career because if it wasn't for this brutal diss we would have gotten Ether in which Nas completely destroys Jay. People need to realize how important this beef is instead of choosing one side and trying to discredit one rapper over the other. Nas won but the beef only made both of them stronger.

Kick in the Door, Long Kiss Goodnight, Real Muthaphuckin G’s were better disses than Ether though

@@robertojefferson3428 Yeah supa ugly is slept on. I'm surprised no one really mentions it
Nah, Ether smashed Takeover on every level....Ether is unFUCKwitable 💯💯💯
Lots of quotables of this survived through hip hop lingo . Definition of a classic
Catchy af
When he says "fell from top 10 to not mentioned at all" ... I hope he wasn't referring to album debut on US billboard cos God's son & Magic are the only Nas albums to debut below top 10 on US billboard.
Think he means Nas was considered a top 10 rapper of all time then at that time he was falling off and wasn’t mentioned at all in hovs mind.
Raah God's son was actually 🥶 as well
@@countmusa1074 wasn't just in Hovs mind. Nas had Illmatic in 1994 and It was written in 1996 but in 1998 he dropped I am which was supposed to be a double disc but it leaked and was heavily bootlegged. The version of I am that dropped in 1998 was a single disc and he promised a second album which came in the form of Nastradomus. In addition I think in 1997-1998 he came out with the Firm. Bravehearts came after Nastradomus...so if you look at Nas after it was Written you can say he was kind of shaky.
Hov basically comparing Nas position in 1994-96 vs Nas in 2001 when this dropped. He aint wrong. Nas came back though with that Stillmatic album. Some real good joints on that, not to mention the stuff on the Lost Tapes (and if you can get the double disc version of I am) show Nas quality never really slacked at that time despite how the music was released.
This is top 3 diss tracks of all time. The beat, the lyrics, the flow! 🤒
Definitely not top 3
@@theorignalmartian1261 ong, Hit em up, Ether, No vaseline and muthaphuckin g’s easily the top
No probably not. It was just a vibe that day. But it might break my top 5 diss tracks. Heck I think Cry me a River is a dope diss track
I reckon it's: No Vaseline, Ether and Hit Em Up.
it's still fire though - people will forever remember this song and think of Ether so it doesn't get enough credit but it's a great track and beat goes off
After actually listening to it a lot more I can say that it’s a Top 5 diss song
Still 🔥
"That's a one hot album every ten year habit"... You could smell the ashes in the air.
I love Takeover and I love Ether 😂
Same 😅
Same but I think Takeover is lyrically superior
The verse about Mobb Deep was disrespectful ☠️🤣🤣🤣🤣
Damn........ damn..... that's wild.... I'd be hurt , like I'd be big mad
I will stand on it Takeover is better than ether on how he broke down Nas career at the point all facts all facts! Nas fans ether was good I’m not taking away from so don’t come here attacking it’s just my opinion Takeover is incredible!
Takeover is a better song and ether had a better impact
No facts
My favorite line is
"No. Youre not on my level gets your brakes tweaked. I sold what your whole album sold in my first week" pretty simple bar but still sick
you say its simple. But ether was filled with simple bars period.
What makes this song better than ether … everything jay said was a fact Lolol .. fact rap
...and he STILL lost😂😂
The takeover, the break‘s over
'Ether' was a better diss, but 'Takeover' had a MUCH better beat.
No shit, it was THE Kanye West
You nuts take over is better and jay only gave him a verse haha
The beat sample is taken from a song by The Doors called Five to One. Very cool. They did a great job turning it into a hip hop song.
@@deepaparakkal4241 takeover was better than either. Nas was good in the 90s but sucks now
lol this is The Doors 5 to 1 sound. Came out like '69. Sound is hard, check it out.
I’m just listening to this song in 2022, I’ve always been an ether fan! I neva cared to hear this.. but this kills ether! I swear!!
That 10 years one hot album bar ruined the song though
No!
@@lyricsanonymous9036 it didn't because it was true. Nobody like I am and nastradamas. Illmatic was illmatic. It was written was considered ehhh. What's false about that? Nas was sinking before this beef
@@robertojefferson3428 *"One hot album every 10 years average"* Really?
Illmatic dropped *4/19/94* while Takeover dropped *9/11/01.* That's 7 years 4 months and 3 weeks, it's *not 10 years* ...so we already disproved the bar 🤷♂️ And I know, Nas debuted in 1991 on Live at the BBQ and that makes 10 years...still don't make a difference, it makes no sense
Either way you go, Nas has 3 hot albums in the given time frame 🤷♂️
@@robertojefferson3428 Considered ehhh? Were you even born yet? IWW was a pretty big album, that shit was everywhere 🤦♂️
underrated thing about this beef is Jay probably made this just chillin in the studio one day off the dome
Nas on the other hand took months for him to drop a diss, which should’ve took points off. He had to really sit back and figure how to attack.. Jay didn’t need all of that and he was speaking FACTS on Takeover, Nas diss hit on a emotional level cause you could feel the preparation and anger Ether.
You people love to d-ride Jay 😂. You probably believe Jay came up with “I got 99 problems…” in a studio session, too 😂.
@@znhait ??????????
He shouldve wrote something then cause he lost.
@@bigboss92 yea he lost by popular vote, I like his diss better than Nas though. Ether probably the greatest diss track ever, while Jay diss track is in the top 5. The fact that you here commenting with me lets you know how lethal the diss track was. Nas took months to respond with that emotional track, none of it was facts.. he sounded hurt. Jay smashed his girl homie, lol idc taking the logical and fact base diss track over Ether. Cry about it.
@@bigboss92 didnt need to write nothing else you here when this track came out in 2001 cut it out. You love Jay style, you a supporter if anything bozo. Why are you here if you think Nas won ?? Go on that side you fan
I can play takeover and ether back to back everyday

@@fredos4623 I ain’t a stan like you , both were good . Your uglyass calling ether trash shows how one sided you are. I liked ether more, takeover was fire too. But we all know who won the beef so yea.
Unpopular opinion: this is better than ether in every way
Very unpopular cause it’s cap
@@JohnDoe-yn1xk my opinion still
Only because you think it's facts but it's really well told lies
@@JohnDoe-yn1xkAin't cap. Takeover directed at multiple rappers, ended mobb deep's career and damn near ended Nas', not to mention its more factual. Ether has fire insults, but they're just that, insults.
I'm sorry but Takeover > Ether. Ether was a whole song for Jay and it was brutal but Takeover only had a verse for Nas and what a verse it was
Can you imagine thinking this is better than Ether. Out your dam mind
it’s better than ether gang. Nas called him gay z 💀
At the time I thought Ether was better but definitely not today
Probably the hardest Jay z ever
Does anyone appreciate The Doors being an unofficial sponsor of the diss? The beat is sick. RIP Jim
This is an example of picking a fight and losing
Idk why people think ether was a better diss, I find the lyrics of takeover way more clever and as a song it sounds better too
Sympathy for nas. JAY-Z was about to vanish Nas from earth so hiphop felt sorry for David against Goliath 💯
