While at UCLA, my girlfriend heard from her friend that MCCABE & MRS. MILLER was an interesting film. We drove 30 miles and saw it’s last screening on its last night at the second-run State Theatre in Pasadena. There were only 2 others in the auditorium. We were blown away. It was like seeing the unveiling of a masterpiece. As we left the theatre, a worker was up on a ladder removing the M-C-C-A-B-E red plastic letters from the theatre's marquee. Thank you Robert Altman, Julie Christie and Warren Beatty. The GF became and remains my wife. She doesn't remember that night at all.

The movie is great, as is Robert Altman, but come on, Hawkes was having his actors talk over each other way before Altman did.

But Altmans movies have a novel feel because he was able to use the then new wireless microphones to allow his performers more freedom.

Altman admitted the Hawks precedent too. Reichardt here is referencing how Altman used multiple tracks of recording to layer dialogue . This technology was not available in that form when Hawks was making his pictures. Altman's technique gives much more clarity and control in post production... I also believe he continued to develop this technique over time.... blah blah pls enjoy movies

Settle down, Beavis. Think about the context she's talking about, as PeacockEv pointed out.

I’ve heard that when asked directly about it, Warren Beatty admits to directing much of the film stating, “Do you think that pothead could direct that?”

Warren Beatty is full of it, and himself. There's a reason "You're So Vain" was written for him. Vilmos Zsigmond, Julie Christie, Rene Auberjonois and Joan Tewkesbury have all talked at length in interviews about Mr. Altman's direction of this movie. I've heard the same thing retold from Quentin Tarantino about Beatty and I hope Beatty was just kidding.
