    Thanks, Nick! I have been diagnosed with OCD intrusive thoughts and have been on and off with this fear for like 13 years! It happened after a bad bout of insomnia once that I had for months, was put on OCD medication and eventually it went away, but every time I have a bad night it comes back. I get super scared of going back through those awful night, but I avoided anything and everyone except at times my Dad forced me to do something like go to the gym (which I used to love), etc. The past week I have avoided so many people because of this exact fear of sleep. Today I finally decided i was going to go the beach and go running because I am sick of being a slave to this fear!

    good point you make that you are not claiming that sleep is not important, but just that we should not 'obsess' over it, or freak out over a bad night's sleep.

      Yes - many people believe we don't think good sleep is important, but when we chase sleep this becomes the issue

      makes sense. think this applies to a lot of things, like diet, exercise etc. This fear that one little slip, or even 2 or 3, are fatal...@@aguywhohikes1271

    Appreciate what you are saying Nick. So 2 months back I was doing exactly what you are saying. Sleeping anytime I wanted, didn't care if I am getting enough sleep and so on.....travelled extensively for days.....now when I am in the set back, just can't sleep......not even 3 hours sleep. Every time I get sleepy and just gonna sleep, i have heart palpitations i have no control over. Any pointers ? I haven't slept in last 3 weeks. Also jet lagged right now. No other choice but to go to a doc. My issue is not the amount of sleep, it's the unlimited amount of thoughts and anxiety cycle all through the night

      Hey Ashish - Unfortunately all you can do for now is try and not fall back into compulsions/ avoidance behaviors. It will be key to wear this as best as possible for now.

    Real good video, Nick! Missed listening to your useful ramblings. 😂 What would your advice be for people with a fear of sleeping/somniphobia? I've got a friend who goes to sleep late because they have a panic disorder, and they fear "losing control of the body for the 6 hours they're asleep for." If you got anything useful to add to this, you have my thanks!

    What happens in my case is eg I will go to sleep, unable to sleep your video will keep Playing in my mind for infinite times......this is an example.....any thing will go on infinite times with andreanaline pumping

      Allowing your mind to latch onto everything will be very important.

    Please, can we get more awareness on this? The internet is a sh*thole full of sleep "hygiene" videos. How could we as a society not be aware that wanting to optimise our sleep could give the opposite effect?!? It seems so obvious, and I can bet lots of people have experienced it!!

    Hi! I seem to have developed a breathing ocd that almost always occurs when I'm trying to sleep. Because of it I haven't been able to sleep without sleeping pills for a month. I just can't fall asleep.
    I feel like I'm breathing manually, but not properly. The exhale feels forced. I also have a particular state when I momentarily get past the fixation of breathing and it feels like I sort of get dizzy and immediately my focus is shifted only to breathing for a few seconds. I think that's possibly when I would normally fall asleep, but instead, my brain signals me to wake up and breathe. Sometimes I noticed that it really is like I forget to breath in that instance, because my breath sounds like it gets interupted.
    In a month I have managed to sleep only two days without the pills and very poorly at that, with less than an hour at a time. Noticed it only because I was dreaming. Otherwise when I don't take them, I don't fall asleep at all. Right now is one of those nights. This whole thing started with 3 days straight of no sleep right on Christmas eve.
    Indeed I notice that when I breathe like that anxiety sets in immediately. I am more concerned with that state that I mentioned since it doesn't seem to be a result of the conscious mind like the manual breathing part.

      Hey Kalkis - Understandable buddy I have definitely been there. In your opinion how would you say your belief work is going about sleep? Also, would you say you're doing a lot of compulsions during the night as well?

    • @KalkisHammer
      @KalkisHammer 8 месяцев назад

      @@aguywhohikes1271 well, I see this as a sort of challenge that I must overcome. At first, I was pretty scared, but have come to accept it. Despite that, I can say that every failed attempt does still damage my moral a bit.
      I have had anxiety previously, but it was only tied to new, or one time events, or sometimes social interactions. It was never tied to something as fundamental as sleep, or breathing and it never came up out of the blue. I also had sleepless nights before, but never like this, where no matter how exhausted I am. I just can't fall asleep.
      As for compulsions, I can't say I have many. I just lay in bed without much preparation before had, except going to the toiled and taking a sip of water. And immediately as I lay down, it starts. I just try to ignore the breathing by doing what I would usually do before falling asleep, which is to imagine something, a story of sorts. But where before, I would focus on that exclusively, without a problem, now it's interrupted by the intrusive thought of breathing. I would also happen to check the time every hour, or two. Time seems to pass quickly while this happens, but still not quick enough to believe I fell asleep.
