I installed an oil drain pipe on my JD C111J with a Briggs 11 horse motor years ago. No oil filter on this engine but the mod makes oil changes more efficient. This machine is 42 years old and still gettin the yard work done! Thanks Donny!
There are several how tos on this filter change but yours is by far the best. You give tool sizes and all information. Thank you. The complete oil change makes more sense. The fact you can convert for less money than changing the big filter makes it a no brainer. Thanks.
OMG 😱 I'm so glad I have found your channel. This is crazy, not knowing much about small engines, I bought my John Deere with the quick change thinking it was the answer to oil changes, it's easy to understand how ridiculous this truly is, I'll be making this conversion in the spring. Thanks Don!
The Briggs and Stratton Twin has a 2 Quart capacity with a standard type oil filter. The EZ Change filter holds .8 Quarts which increases total capacity to 90 ounces instead of 64. When you change the EZ Change Filter, you're changing about 30 percent of the volume. I have done this conversion dozens of times.. I have found that installing the drain tube and draining the oil first reduces the amount of spillage when removing the EZ Change adapter.
Agree - Do the drain tube side first... If you want almost no mess, drive the tires onto 2x4 wood blocks on the side opposite the drain plug side (tips the motor towards that side) and make a Drain Chute from cutting up an empty used milk jug to route the pit you spill when the plug it removed. Then doing the "filter side" will be almost mess free - just a few ounces into a rag.
That was my question: I have S 170 and I'm assuming there is only one type of easy oil change filter?....and the kit of those 3 parts is $25 at walmat, or amazon...i'll buy the next year and try to replace it
Wow!! That is an easy conversion!!! Thanks for posting this Don! The original filter on this had some good intent for the end-consumer, but overall, it is much worse for the environment, and engine with respect to having close to 100% clean, fresh oil to use after an oil change. Have a great up-coming weekend.
I'm going to do this conversion on my E180 as it's due for maintenance now. To avoid the issues with the plastic cap on the pipe, I'm just going to leave the factory bolt there and then when I go to drain it, use my little oil filter drain funnel from my Harley. That way I don't risk losing that plastic cap and the little under filter funnel will direct the oil out over the frame and down into my drain pan. The filter conversion is excellent. I wondered how that would possibly get all the old oil from the motor and now your video shows it doesn't. Thanks for making this video!!!
Another excellent video Don. I am surprised a company like Deere would engineer something like this and also only have a plastic cap on the drain pipe. keep these coming Don, always learn something from you
I don’t like the cap either, even if there is an o ring on the tube. I’d of preferred a metal end cap. I bet if someone sold a properly made metal one it would sell very well, because you know that cap will get lost, leak, damaged, or crack eventually.
@@GNX157 All you need is a piece of iron pipe with threads on both ends and use a pipe cap or a 90 degree female end facing downward and use a 1/4" pipe plug inside of that. I did that on my riding mower and it's no mess oil changes.
I replaced my drain pipe to a pipe from the hardware store w a metal cap. Plus it stick out a little further, making it easier to catch the draining oil.
When I saw Green's new oil filter, I thought it was wasteful and potentially dangerous for the environment. Not to mention leaving lots of old broken down oil in the expensive engine. I'm glad to see that there is a solution. Thanks Don.
Hey Dony, I did this a couple of years ago on a E130. The easy change costs $85 in Australia. The conversion costed approx $45 and now its converted my oil changes are under $30 per year.... compared to $85, which is not an oil change its a oil top up
My brother in-law had a mower with the plastic cap on the oil drain tube. It unknownly came off for who knows what reason and the oil ran out as he mowed grass. Of course we all knew what happened,, it locked up. So it's a good practice to make sure the cap is locked in place each time you start it up to mow. Get video! 👍
Great job on this video. My new JD S-130 was delivered today and i love it. Your video answered the obvious question about the Easy Change oil change device. What a dumb idea. Thanks for the instruction on installing the fix for that, and including the part numbers.
I have watched about 6 of these videos and your video is by far the best. Short and to the point and consise. The only thing I haven't seen is using an oil extractor to remove the oil. I bought one years ago for my boat and I use it on my tractor, power washer and Cyclone rake it makes life easier and less messy I will do this on my new S170 until the warranty runs out, as I am not sure if making the change will affect my warranty and by using the extractor till then, I will at least have all fresh oil!
I had an E150 in for service today. Owner said they had done the EZ oil filter change last Fall so no need to change the oil. I checked the oil level per usual and it was WAY too low! So it seems they did the EZ oil change and never checked or added oil. So I topped it off and did the rest of the tune-up and returned it. I had recalled seeing this video on the subject some time ago so I just sent them this video and links to the Amazon parts for the EZ filter ($44 US) and conversion kit WITH filter ($16 US) and encouraged them to have me do it in the The Fall or next Spring. 👍👍
Thanks Dony. I will be doing this on my E130 in the spring. I don't know who the brilliant engineer was who designed this oil change system. Expensive oil filters here in Canada.
I had converted mine over and when I went to do a oil.change the filter was stuck i had to use a hammer and a screw driver lol took a while I kept the quick oil filter parts so I put them back on never have a stuck oil filter again but I do change all of the oil I draine it all out ill spend the extra money if u see the video someome put out the filter inside is huge compared to the regular filters so to me thats more cleaning power thats just my opinion it works for me.i enjoy ur videos thanks
I did this conversion last year. To ensure the nipple the filter screws onto does not back out, I used a little Loctite on the engine side. To minimize oil spillage when installing the drain tube, I siphoned out as much oil as I could through the fill tube and then raised mower a little on the drain side. I always keep a few cans of cheap brake cleaner in my garage, it is great for cleaning up residual oil spillage. Make sure there is a catch pan underneath.
Love it or hate it, it is a great idea for those who do not wish to mess with or get dirty or have to deal with waste oil, not sure where you are buying your quick change bought one (last week) of the filters on amazon for 45.99. A great idea for people who can not deal with waste oil or do not have a method to deal with it.. My daughters machine with the quick change has 1200 hours on it and still runs great. I personnaly do not like it, as I changed mine over to the kit you show.
Hey thx Man. Perfect step by step. Appreciated all the detail regarding each step. Easy conversion and astounding how much oil is left in the engine with the easy change system.
I love my john deere riding mower but I really hate that $60 oil filter 😭 practically zero convenience difference between a 1/4 turn and a few turns on threads for something I spend 5 minutes a year on. Love the idea of getting rid of it!
That's pretty cool that they make stubs that can be inserted than to convert to a proper oil filter. Looks like the manufacturer set up would be a short engine life. Love the vid and the conversion tip. 👏👏👏✌️🙃
Great video! First thing I did after break in was to throw that junk Sleezy EZ oil change garbage away and do what you did but I used the Briggs and Stratton 594200 Oil Drain Hose and the Briggs & Stratton 796532 Hose Connector. The flexible oil drain hose is really convenient. It’s flexible and has an easy drain cap. That EZ thing leaves dirty oil in the engine too.
I see the points going for the ez change system. Lots of people don’t change their oil. It is messy. Even people who know what they are doing make messes doing oil changes, and it has a bunch of steps involved. With this you don’t even have to warm up the engine to “change” your oil, there’s no mess. A person may be more likely to use this, and that way they do end up prolonging the life of their engine a bit over never doing anything, but never as long as doing proper oil changes at proper intervals would. And John Deere makes a bigger fortune selling you their proprietary filters and oil. That’s the most important thing. I like how they tell the people using this system to add more oil as needed like they actually check their oil level ever, much less top it off. If they did that they wouldn’t use the ez change system.
Great video. I just got one of these mowers used and was trying to figure out if it could be converted back to the standard oil & filter change. Thanks!
Sometimes I wonder what engineers are thinking. Thanks for the video, I’m going to write down these part numbers in case I ever run into one I want to change.
I bought my 140 2 or 3 years ago. I bought the 140 because it was the only one with simple oil filter standard. My dealer had to order it only took about 10 days or so.
My father in law was just bragging about his “Easy oil change” filter. I was skeptical, having not heard of it. I’ll be showing him this video and another that lead me here to change his back to the old school filter method before he blows up his mower
"I don't know why they did this." *IT'S FOR JUST ONE SIMPLE REASON: **_GREED_* _Everyone should research this topic (& prepare to get angry): John Deere Right to Repair_
Research shows that the main reason they did this was to encourage owners to change the oil. Most folks don't change the oil at all - ever. The thinking with the Easy Change is that getting 75% fresh oil is better than getting 0% fresh oil. There are folks who either don't know how to do a conventional oil change or are just too lazy. This was an attempt to get those folks to do some maintenance. I put this in the same category as the B&S "Check and Add" system where they tell you the oil NEVER needs changed.
I was thinking the same thing. They know it decreases engine life, and want you to buy more mowers. John Deere has fallen way down since the old days...
Great video, thanks for the insights... that said, it's so disappointing that JD would stoop to something like this, makes you wonder about their commitment to quality, the environment and their customers. One suggestion, you could shape aluminum foil under the oil drain plug to route all of the oil into a pan below... bend up little edges on both sides to channel the oil where it needs to go. This also works when you are changing the oil as needed.
Go to a JD dealer that sells lawn tractors and you will be told that their product is better because you can "change" the oil in 30 seconds without getting your hands dirty. That is their target market. Homeowners who don't want to drain or use an oil extractor and take used oil to recycle. The same homeowner who thinks it's ok to throw a quart of used oil into household garbage. I bought a hardly used E170 and did this same conversion a few months ago. The JD parts counterman acknowledged that every one of their customers who are DIYers has done the conversion.
Great job Dony. Yes what a terrible idea John Deere. This is as bad as the plastic transmissions they put in some tractors. Thanks for the Great info as always my friend.
Good morning Don. Another great vid. You and I both hate that drippy oil mess. YUK! Would it help or is it worth the time to elevate the side you're working on? Then get the drain tube installed. Once done, set in down to finish draining the oil. You are the pro. You would know best. I don't even own a rider. Awesome vid Don.
My Kohler 13hp onLT133 already has the smaller filter and I did my oil change this week at 1.8/1.9 qts. Used full synthetic 10w40 for hot summer temps. okay per manual!!!!! OReilly's had it cheap. The filter does sit on that dumb elbow thing and does keep old oil in it......I Might have to do that change.
I invested in a mighty vac extraction pump no more messy oil changes suck the oil out of the dip stick works awesome gets all the oil out I paid $ 160 for it off a tool truck her in northeastern alberta canada
What a great video Dony, I don't know why John Deere changed that? Probably to get you to spend more money in their stores. I will keep my 2010 John Deere running as long as I can, it has over 800 hours on it and still works quite well. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for this excellent video. I have a new 170 lawn tractor and plan on making this conversion this fall. Maybe this is why John Deere gives a 2 yr. warranty and the other brand gives a 3 yr. warranty. Do you and anyone else have any idea if doing the conversion impacts or voids the JD warranty?
Here in Norway, some people call John Deere products John Dyr (Dyr = expensive in this case)..verry easy to understand why when I see something like the easy oil change system.
Amazing that so called 'engineers" would think this was a good idea.. I did this same mod on my friends John Deere. Different parts but the out come was the same. Great vid so others can see it done.
Fantastic. I can see the idea of the easy/no mess changing of filter but leaving that much oil in and charging that much for the fancy filter seems criminal. I'm guessing they upped the filter change frequency so while you're not changing all the oil (and nothing in the sump/sludge/particles?), you're always adding fresh oil/additives, etc. to compensate. Too bad you can't unscrew just a filter from the easy change thing after removal, and replace that, then reinstall the easy change thing. Ideally, being able to add oil to the filter/assembly as well before re-installation on the engine. Next they'll be adding computer controlled engine that they'll force you to pay exorbitant prices to replace by factory trained mechanic when it should be repairable. Support right-to-repair!
Thanks for the video. My new S130 needs it's first oil change and will do this. Does the hollow plug that holds the filter on require thread locker? Thanks
In the US they were $40, 4 years ago. Now they are close to $60. The idea was to make oil changes very easy for home owners, which they are, and the oil is triple filtered in those huge filters. However, it costs more than double for an oil change and the oil isn't really as clean as a full change. I have the kit, ready to go on this spring. 😉
Nice job Don, I’ve also found that you can use a super tech 3614 oil filter on it and I use the same filter on my Kohler engines - the super tech from wal-mart is 99% efficient according to the filter box. I’ve never had any problems with my engines.
@@faxmen09thx for handy tip. 3614 is a very common filter on lawn tractors. Also is the correct filter for my Ford Focus (2005-2011) with the 2.0 Duratec engine.
I converted with the help of your vid. Thanks. I'm now wondering if a different dipstick is necessary. Before conversion, a good quantity of oil stays in the filter system, which the dipstick can't measure. After conversion, that oil is now free to settle to lowest point in engine.
I just saw this system yesterday on a John Deere. Da, I said to my wife. How would you get the oil out of the crank case. Pretty silly idea. Thanks for the video Dony.
I just bought a new JD S170 with this Easy Oil Change system. I will be converting it back to the old system. Have you heard of any problems obtainning warranty work if the Easy Change system was replaced?
You should use lock-tite on the filter adapter piece on the part that goes into the engine. This will prevent it from getting loose when you remove the filter the next time.
Good video Dony, could you fill the oil filter with oil before installing the filter to prime it . I know this can be messy , but I always did when I had my Cub cadet with the Kawasaki 18 horse V twin . Do you have to put the side panels back on ?
I would not trust this litle plastic cap on the drain plug, is there another plug option with conventionnal metal plug cap? Great video!! You did improove 2 things doing this conversion, cheaper filter, and a complete dirty oil drain!
I did one in 2018 on my Dad's E180 54 inch deck 25 hp . Being in Michigan it was 65 dollars to change the oil . with that 1 inch nipple and a drain plug he can change the oil for under 20 bucks . The quick change Idea is nice but still a mess in the long run oil in the land fill .
I did it, very easy but before you remove the existing filter assembly make sure to stuff a lot of rugs under and more importantly behind the old filter assembly. If you don’t you will end up with plenty of oil running through the holes of the frame and on top of the belt pulley. This will happen even after removing the filter and after emptying the oil. Do it in this order. 1. Start the engine to warm up the old oil a bit. Wait 5 min. 2. Remove oil filter only for now. Also remove the side panel by the filter. 8mm socket, very easy. 3. Empty the oil out of the pan. I left the existing oil plug in place. I don’t trust the nipple with the plastic part so I didn’t replace it. If that comes off kiss your engine goodbye. My hand pump got rid of all the old oil through the dipstick hole. 4. Now remove the old filter assembly and put your new oil filter nipple in place. 5. Screw the new filter on and add 1 and 3/4 quarts of SAE 10W-30 oil. (Only if you are sure all the old oil is out.) 6. Start the engine and run for a minute. Check for leaks around oil filter. 7. Shut off engine, wait for 5 min, check oil level and fill as necessary. Mine took 2 qts plus a few ozs more. What I did didn’t require me removing the panel on the oil plug side.
Might do it, but for now I’ll just drain it all the way, buy the filter, and top off with synthetic Amsoil. Then I’ll drain it half as much as I normally would. Always have good oil around anyways.

One suggestion, you could shape aluminum foil under the oil drain plug to route all of the oil into a pan below... bend up little edges on both sides to channel the oil where it needs to go. This also works when you are changing the oil as needed.
Very helpful. You really don't like messes!
I'm doing the conversion. Was curious why you didn't put loctite on the filter connector. Great video.
Great video Donny! Just did the swap after watching your video. Easy peasy!
Yes, I change to a regular oil filter a few years ago
Great job Dony. Yes what a terrible idea John Deere. This is as bad as the plastic transmissions they put in some tractors. Thanks for the Great info as always my friend.
Good morning Don. Another great vid. You and I both hate that drippy oil mess. YUK! Would it help or is it worth the time to elevate the side you're working on? Then get the drain tube installed. Once done, set in down to finish draining the oil. You are the pro. You would know best. I don't even own a rider. Awesome vid Don.
yes elevating to one side may help !
Have you tried a Form A Funnel? I've wondered how well they work but looks like it's worth a shot. Great video as usual.
Awesome video, very informative ! 👍
can you replace the plastic cap on the drain pipe?
My Kohler 13hp onLT133 already has the smaller filter and I did my oil change this week at 1.8/1.9 qts. Used full synthetic 10w40 for hot summer temps. okay per manual!!!!!
OReilly's had it cheap. The filter does sit on that dumb elbow thing and does keep old oil in it......I Might have to do that change.
Very informative. Excellent delivery.
Very informative, I will be doing this to mine. Thanks.
I invested in a mighty vac extraction pump no more messy oil changes suck the oil out of the dip stick works awesome gets all the oil out I paid $ 160 for it off a tool truck her in northeastern alberta canada
i made one using some nipples and a pail with tight lid and shop vac
What a great video Dony, I don't know why John Deere changed that? Probably to get you to spend more money in their stores. I will keep my 2010 John Deere running as long as I can, it has over 800 hours on it and still works quite well. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for this excellent video. I have a new 170 lawn tractor and plan on making this conversion this fall. Maybe this is why John Deere gives a 2 yr. warranty and the other brand gives a 3 yr. warranty. Do you and anyone else have any idea if doing the conversion impacts or voids the JD warranty?
excellent advice, but need to buy some odd tool sizes
I have the 10 year old version of this tractor good information
Here in Norway, some people call John Deere products John Dyr (Dyr = expensive in this case)..verry easy to understand why when I see something like the easy oil change system.
Amazing that so called 'engineers" would think this was a good idea.. I did this same mod on my friends John Deere. Different parts but the out come was the same. Great vid so others can see it done.
You make some of best videos
Think I'd replace the sides after running it and checking for leaks..pretty confident
Excellent video. Thank you
Great tip Donny thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks for the video. My new S130 needs it's first oil change and will do this. Does the hollow plug that holds the filter on require thread locker? Thanks
Removing proprietary garbage sounds like the perfect time to put in a remote mount oil filter unit and a cooler! Win win if you ask me.
Very helpful. I think maybe I will remove drain plug first. Wojld that make sense?
In the US they were $40, 4 years ago. Now they are close to $60. The idea was to make oil changes very easy for home owners, which they are, and the oil is triple filtered in those huge filters. However, it costs more than double for an oil change and the oil isn't really as clean as a full change. I have the kit, ready to go on this spring. 😉
Thanks i wrote down what I needed and will get this switched over at my next service.
Excellent video Donyboy thanks for sharing this info
Thanks Don! Looking forward to having you do this for me!😂
Thank you very much 👍 doing this on my s120 very soon. You got a new sub from me.
Nice job Don, I’ve also found that you can use a super tech 3614 oil filter on it and I use the same filter on my Kohler engines - the super tech from wal-mart is 99% efficient according to the filter box. I’ve never had any problems with my engines.
No Supertech filters sold in Canada.
@@ElectoneGuy Any 3614 or equivalent application will work instead of a Super Tech.
No, same dipstick.
I just saw this system yesterday on a John Deere.
Da, I said to my wife.
How would you get the oil out of the crank case.
Pretty silly idea.
Thanks for the video Dony.
Hey DonyBoy. I will change mine over. In my opinion, it is just another money grab from John Deere. I gave them enough money already. Thanks, Dony.👍👍🍁
Reminds me of the Briggs & Stratton "never change the oil, only top it up" bushwa.
I just bought a new JD S170 with this Easy Oil Change system. I will be converting it back to the old system. Have you heard of any problems obtainning warranty work if the Easy Change system was replaced?
Can't wait to do this....donyboy you have made that so easy...the alan socket and the 28mm socket are the difficult pieces
You can do it!
Is there a reason for using Locktite 567 on one side and not the other?
@@davismaharaj9919 yes
You should use lock-tite on the filter adapter piece on the part that goes into the engine. This will prevent it from getting loose when you remove the filter the next time.
Thanks Don.... that was an awesome video 📹!!!!!
Outstanding tutorial as always! Thanks!
Perfect Video and tutorial. Thanks very much!
Well done and most helpful.
Great conversion 😎👍🏻
(Only if you are sure all the old oil is out.)
6. Start the engine and run for a minute. Check for leaks around oil filter.
7. Shut off engine, wait for 5 min, check oil level and fill as necessary. Mine took 2 qts plus a few ozs more.
What I did didn’t require me removing the panel on the oil plug side.
Wow, I’ll be making that conversion 👍🏻
Might do it, but for now I’ll just drain it all the way, buy the filter, and top off with synthetic Amsoil. Then I’ll drain it half as much as I normally would. Always have good oil around anyways.
Easy stuff and great video. Thank you!
