Ask someone of Puerto Rican heritage, what I don't want to see is Puerto Rico turn into another hawaii. Where the locals are marginalized into the corners of the land, impoverished into lower class living, and most of the island pretty much gets dominated by rich, greedy owners who then want to price the locals out of their own homes, and replace them with other rich, greedy individuals.

Yes! As someone who grew up on Maui and had to leave because it became too sad to witness the Hawaiians harassed for fishing their lands and for things harmless as sleeping in the bushes they were forced to live in. Even working 2 jobs double minimum wage that are skilled labor.. it's almost impossible to provide enough to make ends meet. It's so sad to watch Hawaiians ran off by cops with batons in their hands for fishing at night all because their sacred ancestral fishing grounds was bought by Bezos. Once not too long ago anyone could drive a loop around the island then Operah bought here secondary mansion. Now you have to take an almost 2 hour drive to get to what was always only 10 minutes away. They have no rights they have no freedom they have no future on the islands of their ancestral home. They are forced out of their home and their culture is destroyed repackaged and sold to tourist as an idea. They cut down the forest poisoned the land deforested the hills until runoff killed the entire reefs turned the beaches into hotels/golf courses. They made it 2 million minimum just to be considered a human being. It's why I moved to PR and am building food forest to grow a future of independence for the Island!

@@josematamoros596 hopefully the consensus is for independence! I'm trying to make a solution. I'm growing food forest on PR to ensure food sovereignty..hopefully sooner than later. After an abundance is growing sustainably the plan is to create a digital currency backed by the value of Parcha. The food grown in forest will be given to those in need 0% sold for profit. The food forest will act as a bank to back the value of Parcha coin. This non traditional bank will accept local produce such as mango or vegetables in exchange for Parcha token that will be slight stronger than USD, completely stable, and have 1 to 1 backing. The food recieved will be instantly donated to those most in need or preserved for future. I hope to allow any local produce to be exchanged for this token to create an insensitive for people to work towards PR becoming completely food sovereign with an abundance of excess. Another goal equally important is to expand economic inclusiveness to create opportunitys for those in rural areas to work for themselves and generate wealth. Eventually I'd like to have it be used to pay PRs budgets and it be completely transparent so there is no chance of questions of corruption and who's.

Agreed, however PR would be better as a territory of Florida and they can be Floridians. PR as a tourist trap is about all it is good for at this point, plus a few military installations. Their infrastructure keeps being wiped out by hurricanes so as their own nation they would never catch up and prosper with mainlanders because of their limited resources. There was a pharmaceutical plant there and it got wiped out, which is why when the pandemic started we had medical supply issues and had to lean on China for some stuff. PR is too much of a risk to invest in critical infrastructure but hotels and theme parks are good, gives architects and civil engineers something to do and experiment with more hurricane-hardened structures.

As a born and raised Puerto Rican that still lives in the island. I honestly have to say I am tired of the same BS debate about the status of the island. Our politics is literally based on this! I get it, it's part of the geopolitics of the Island; we being a part of the US without actually being a part of it is definitely a topic of debate. But there's a line. We have to address corruption, incompetence and nepotism. Our culture is literally being transformed because of the huge brain drain we are suffering. Those who leave the island are the professionals and most decent people in our society while a lot of those who stay tend to be welfare citizens who do very little for our country, culture and quality of life(high crime rate in barrios and projects). If PR became a US state it would have more than double the rate of corruption the most corrupt US state. For once I would like for this topic to be put aside and let us address more practical and pragmatic matters like the Foraker act(that raises the prices of everyday goods); our bad infrastructure, our bad and inefficient public cervices, Puerto Ricans lack of trust in their own government and institutions(cause of our high levels of corruption among government officials and civil servants), high levels poverty(comparable to the mainland), the economy, urban decay, and last but not least incompetence at all levels of our society... among many, many other stuff like bad cultural habits...etcetera. All of these things have to be addressed and solved by us Puerto Rican who stay on the island and fight everyday to make it a better place. I don't care about the US or our Status for that matter. Cause all that is second to this! We and only we Puerto Ricans have the power to make things better for us and our country and no matter what happens no amount of US government intervention will make any difference. This is about culture, geopolitics, and our domestic politics. I hope this makes it easier to understand our struggles for all who read this.

Let me clarify something that I’ve seen in the comments, for those that say that “PR doesn’t give anything back”.
Let’s do not forget these facts
    1. Spain ceded Puerto Rico to America in 1898 after losing the Spanish American War.
    2. In 1899 the Puerto Rican battalion (PR army) was incorporated into the us army and in 1920 after serving in WW1 it became the notoriously known 65th Infantry Regiment.
    3. 65th earned numerous medals including 900 Purple Hearts thanks to their bravery and their motivation.
    4. We also fought in Korea, Vietnam, Gulf war, Iraq and Afghanistan, wars that US caused for no apparent reason, and possibly with China, because now US wants to defend Vietnam a country that hasn’t “given anything valuable” to US .
So before you comment, educate, read, feel you head with information. Thats is very disrespectful to those that gave their lives to say that PR does not give anything back. At least have some decency.

The Puerto Rican economy is awful and you can see what they 5hinl in this video. The islanders are not willing to stay and become a state and fix it. All the people interviewed in this video said they wanted to move to the mainland. Why bring in a new state when all that would happen would be a mass exodus off the island to America. Sadly Puerto Rico and the Samoan Islands are the ones who have more people serving in the US military. Samoans have it even worse because they are not US citizens. People never want to learn about the history and also they don’t know why Puerto Rico has had so many issues in the first place. As a Puerto Rican native, living in the US, the political status of the island has always played a major role in dividing us a one people. I strongly believe that the political status should be put to the side permanently and totally concentrate in the local economy in order to bring a higher living standard equal to the mainland. I believe this will stop the migration of the younger generation and skilled people. I left the island when I turned 15, never looked back, but always wondered if that was the right move (I’m 55 now). If the opportunities had been there, I probably would have never left. I think the reason why it isn’t an option anymore is because this in between has run it’s course of being effective. The best choice would be statehood because it gives an injection of federal money, provides greater protection in emergencies, and the corruption of its politicians can be rooted out a whole lot easier. Yes there will be challengers worth Puerto Rico becoming a state, but more people stand to benefit and gain from statehood on the island than not. And yes more investment will come into the island, but I don’t think it’ll be to the point of driving people out into the mainland. I think the whole point of it becoming a state is to provide more economic opportunities for those people that are there.

But they allow these inept politicians dictate and ruin things. It's in their hands to do so but choose not to because they are comfortable with having things handed to them that is the problem. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory with Commonwealth status whose residents are U.S. citizens by birth since 1917.
Puerto Rican soldiers have fought in every major U.S. military conflict during the past century.
About 84,000 people moved from Puerto Rico to the United States in 2014.
On average, 230 people left per day -- enough to fill two daily flights out of the island.
The result is the highest net migration recorded in the past decade.
What I am trying to tell you guys is or we are granted statehood or we will continue to move to the U.S.A. looking for a brighter future it is our right as US citizen's.

Also all Puerto Ricans are born American citizens and have the same rights as Americans born in the main land to me it those not make sense for Puerto Rico to be independent to govern themselves, they should become a state with there own state laws and tax brackets Opportunities are much better in the main land for work, business and investing and education Not to mention if Puerto Rico becomes a state many US politicians can’t hide there money or property in Puerto Rico along with many wealthy billionaire’s and millionaires they would be force to pay there taxes they been getting away all this years with. I don’t have nothing against wealthy people but for those who do not know they are ways that are legal in the mainland we’re wealthy people don’t pay taxes when they navigate the complex financial system we have in the United States this services are expensive and financial advisors do charge expensive fees and premiums.

If that goes away, a big decline in living standards is inevitable. This would result in a huge migration , maybe up to 1/2 of the population, to the United States, since anyone who currently has US citizenship at the time of independence (all Puerto Ricans) would retain it.

Puerto Rican's are in our military. They are vibrant, hard working people. Whatever they decide, I wish them the best. (I remember you Guzman!)

Sadly the citizens of Puerto Rico have no say in the government. Taxation without representation.

Eliminating institutionalized government corruption must be the first step towards rebuilding Puerto Rico. I -had- to leave in 2015, because I decided NOT to procure political favoritism. I stayed and worked on the straight and narrow, and my business failed miserably for doing the right thing. Once we as Puerto Ricans return -to- public service, instead of servicing ourselves from the public, can we build upon what our great-great-grandparents began back long before 1952. Un abrazo a mis hermanos borincanos.

All our state governments are subject to and swayed by corporate lobbying, so why should Puerto Rico be held to the higher standard of a corruption-free political body before being granted equal representation and rights as the other states?

@@leviwoodall8472 The correct answer is we shouldn’t. Although, Puerto Rico has voted to become a state multiple times already, its destiny relies on Congress’ ability to abide to a binding vote, unlikely as it may seem.
