I’m thai and pascatarian and I love this substitution. Pressed tofu is actually very good for other dishes that require ground meat. For example, I have successfully made *Pad Ga Prao* and *Khua Gling* with it. It absorbs the flavour so well. Everyone should try!!
My mom is from the Mahasarakham province of Isaan, and laab is one of my favourite dishes she would make! But I haven't had it in 3 years since I started eating vegan. So, as you can imagine, I was ecstatic to see your vegan version of laab! Well, I made it today, and I gotta say.....OHHHMG!!!! It was sooo perfect! You could hardly tell there was no fish sauce or ground meat in it! I would have eaten this back when I WAS a meat eater! Even my husband gave it two thumbs up, and he's quite the food critic. Thank you so much for sharing this! I can't wait to put it to the true test and make it for me mom 🤞😂. Keep these recipes coming! ❤️
I have to admit, this recipe didn't sound like much, but since you and your hubby raved about it I decided to try it. Wow you were right this was so delicious! I'm definitely going to make this on the regular. As vegetarians and vegans know, the best way to make the crumbled tofu sub for ground meat is to freeze it and then thaw it and crumble it up. Turns out much more like ground meat that way. I used some additional umami potions that I have as a substitute for fish sauce and Golden mountain sauce.
Thank you for thinking of us! I love your recipes and I'm glad you're making vegan recipes as well! Not only helps us, but you're eating healthier in the process :)
I made this recipe recently. It was delicious! The spices and flavors were perfect. I’ll keep coming back to Hot Thai Kitchen to look for more vegan recipes.
I made this and it was absolutely delicious! Never had laab gai but judging from this recipe I don’t need to try. Can only recommend everyone to try this. 😋
Thank you for this!! I’ve chosen to go vegan and I’ve been searching for dishes close to my culture, which uses a lot of fish sauce, hoisin sauce and oyster sauce. It’s so good to see this! Can’t wait for more videos like this!
The local thai restaurant here uses small fried pieces of tofu, and like with their laab with meat, they add big chunks of fresh red chilies in addition to dry roasted chilies. The fresh chilies somehow make the dish amazing - maybe it's the sweetness, like with the corn.
Thank you so much for your vegan recipes and all of your recipes in general. I've always been veganising your dishes but it is great to have a vegan recipe from you, the expert 😍 I looove loove love Thai cuisine!
Truly amazing recipe! Can’t wait to incorporate into my next plant meal for next week. Thank you Pailin for this Vegan recipe, hopefully you can share more of Thai Vegan meal into this 2020. 💚💚🙏🙏
Ok laap j is my favourite Thai food and when ye smelt it at the end I got an enormous amount of water from under my tongue just flood my mouth, the most ever, thanks for the recipe thanks can’t wait to make it
This looks amazing. I have some extra firm tofu in my fridge and was literally just thinking about what to use it for. I am not vegan but I cook a lot of vegan food. I also have to say, I love the muted "woohoo" Pai often says when pouring ingredients. It cracks me up because I totally do the same thing.
Funny story. In march 2017, almost 3 yrs ago, I made laab using your recipe. But being vegetarian I made with-you guessed it- crumbled tofu 😂😂😂 so this was trippy to watch lol
I am excited to try this! I've just recently switched to eating more of a pescatarian diet and was so worried about giving up all the yummy authentic thai food!
Hello Pailin, could you please let me know, if I wanna use fish sauce how much of It should I use and also may I use with fish sauce also soya sauce, and if yes, how much of It? Thank you so much in advance 😊🙏
Hi Adam here! If I understand the question, the recipe calls for "1½ Tbsp soy sauce" so she usually recommends substituting just less than one for one, then see how it tastes? (Different soy sauces can have a different level of saltiness.)
Ironic I'm living in Thailand now (originally from the NYC area) and I bought some plant based laab "meat' balls. Good but kind of oily. So I searched for what is laab and I found this vid. Looks great ! I happen to have some tofu, it's not pressed, but I'm going to make it in a similar way to your recipe for some burritos !! Thanks - Cheers !
Hello sister do you know how to make some meatballs, shrimp and hotdogs with cabbage and cucumbers salad? I don't know what they call but I see people in Laos eat.
True about the fish sauce. The best thing I’ve found is called “Fysh Sauce”. It has a green label and it’s made from seaweed. It gives a great umami ocean flavour and smell, but it’s not fishy. Maybe one day 🙏🏽
If you don't like the sour tofu taste, Crumble the tofu and squeeze out the liquid with a cheesecloth, then freeze it and defrost and then squeeze out the liquid again. It makes the tofu more chewy and meaty as well
K M It is really easy to make. Just toast uncooked rice in a pan until it is golden, the blast it in the blender until it’s course powder. It gives smokiness to the dish, which is amazing but omitting it won’t change the delicious taste of this dish 😊

Try adding toasted finely chopped shitake mushroom bits into the laab as well. The flavours go to a whole new level!❤❤❤❤❤❤
the corn is genius in this recipe. adds texture and a subtle sweetness
We’re pescetarians but mostly vegetarians/vegans. This is right up our alley! Thanks, Khun Pai!

I’m Lao and grew up vegetarian - I’ve never gotten to try laap before and I’m so excited now!

Always so excited to see a vegan recipe from you! I know it's going to be super delicious! :)
how nice. i dont eat pork so it's been really hard for me to imagine how laab works/tastes for years. tks for this version. love all soybean products
If you dont eat pork, you can also try making laab with other proteins, ground chicken, turkey, beef, etc.
Or omnipork vegan ground pork!

I have used this brand of Vegan Fish Sauce in Melbourne Australia. It’s pretty good.

Glad you’re making vegan dishes. I’ve made this before and do not miss meat at all! Thank you! 👍👍
If you don’t miss meat at all why are you making dishes that contain meat substitutes? 😂
Tried this recipe. The rice power did the magic!

Show how to make those cute thai dumplings that use a tool similar a tweezer
you can use a little of Himalayan black salt to give egg's taste to tofu
Thank you for sharing your vegan tofu and corn laab recipe! I wonder how come you don’t use omnipork vegan ground pork in this recipe??
This cooking show is awesome! Satisfaction
Thanks for the vegan adaptation!!
Gotta try this recipe! I'm not vegan but you make it looks so delicious
Hi,, I love your videos and all of your show
I add tao jiew when I make laab vegan -- adds a lil funk to make up for the lack of fish sauce.
looks really yummy.....
do you think this technique with firm dry tofu would well iwith a Nam Prik Ong recipe?
Very easy will try
please please more vegan recipes!!!
Thanks, thanks a lot for sharing vegetarian recipe
Thanks for sharing 😘
It looks delicious.
Pai, as a chef, how do you organize your pantry and kitchen cabinets to optimize your entire cooking experience?
Do you have any vegan jackfruit recipes?
Pailin this is is unrelated but I thought of it because of your variant Laab recipe but do you speak Lao as well as Thai?
@@natto2581 I know, I speak/read both as well as Khmer. :D
Koriand'r Of The Stars I speak Khmer too lol 😆
Nat Nonthanasin 😆👍
Very nice and tasty.
If I want to make traditional chicken laab following your recipe but then want to add the tofu, is there something I should do different? Thanks.
I asked and she said "No just add the tofu." Cheers! Adam
I found a great cooking show.☺️
6:51 Love, there is no reason for mint when you have 472 leaves of basil incorporated in the dish. This looked *amazing* for the weekend!
I'm vegan and still watch every one of your videos :)

Would ground nori work instead of fish sauce?

Hell yeah for the vegan recipe. Thanks for keeping us in mind.
Mmmmmmmmm... i never heard of this dish before. Taste spicy and yummy meal. Great recipe. See u next time.
I laab this!
Thank you so much! 🔥🔥🔥
I laab this recipe.
True about the fish sauce. The best thing I’ve found is called “Fysh Sauce”. It has a green label and it’s made from seaweed. It gives a great umami ocean flavour and smell, but it’s not fishy. Maybe one day 🙏🏽
My fave sub for fish sauce is chinese fermented tofu, the one that comes in a jar. Especially good sub for the Lao fermented fish sauce.
If you don't like the sour tofu taste,
Crumble the tofu and squeeze out the liquid with a cheesecloth, then freeze it and defrost and then squeeze out the liquid again. It makes the tofu more chewy and meaty as well
Can i use cottage cheese in place of tofu
Thank you girl! 👍💕✨
I don't have the pound rice powder. Can i just skip that ingredient? Thank you
K M you sure can but it is a major flavor so I would recommend against skipping it.
K M It is really easy to make. Just toast uncooked rice in a pan until it is golden, the blast it in the blender until it’s course powder. It gives smokiness to the dish, which is amazing but omitting it won’t change the delicious taste of this dish 😊
yummy yummy
YES 😍 thank you
