Happens to me, stored in shelf protected with covers, hardly touch them and when i look at them.. Boom, rust on the edges. Thanks for the video is really clarifying
Found a solution. Get silica gel and keep it on your steelbooks or in your cupboard. You find it in shoe boxes normally with a do not eat sign on it. Looks like salt. Its used to soak up moisture to prevent rust
@@lockecole6220 its ok. Just place them on the shelf. I do that.. also use car polish twice a month on my steelies with a microfiber cloth.. Works wonders. Steelbooks are in awesome condition and I live in a very humid area
Hello from 2024. The Xbox - Halo 2 Limited Collector's Edition is particularly easy to rust. I treat these steel cases just like a firearm. Clean it regularly and treat with gun oil. Then...Clean it regularly. Also...clean it regularly. If possible, store in a box with silica packets or, rice. This will keep the humidity down that rusts these products. Good luck!
Thanks for this info. Funny thing I have a hygrometer in the room where I store my collection, never saw humidity higher than 35-40%. Also keeping my steelbooks factory sealed, so I am on the safe side I hope. Bummer this happened to you =( p.s. thanks again btw for your loose disc fix video, very helpful.
what about vacuum bags? i thought about it if i should put my steelbooks in vacuum bags because there no air and so no humidity can affect them right? because i recognised one of my steelbook start to rust in one edge, its really really a little bit so now i start panic... because i have a huge collection and all my stuff is treated very very well and very very important for me.. i can't understand how this could happen, i life near the sea yeah...so thats the problem... anyway would vacuum bags be a good idea? and the one steelbook who start rusting is this steelbook still lost? it is really only a littble bit, with some special spray i edited the steelbook carefully and it was able to remove the little rust from it (it was only superficial on one edge) or will it come back no matter what I do??? Please help me... so i tought maybe vacuum would be the best idea to protect the steelbooks from everything or is it wrong? because i didn't find any mention about it. Everyone just talk about protecting plastic bags like wraps but i think in wraps Water can accumulate in it, but i never hear someone said how about vacuum bags, there should be any air and any water in it, so no chance for rust?
I've considered that option before, but never had the chance to try it. As long as the plastic is appropriate, I see no reason why it wouldn't work but since I never tried it I can't talk about it. Nice suggestion though. As for the steelbook that already got some rust, it's not necessarily lost since the process can be greatly delayed but once it happens it just gets worse with time if you don't do something.
Mirror's Edge rusting? That's what you get for calling me a "selfish person" on CE.o. Karma's a bitch!! Lol just kidding, nice video again. Very creative topic that is especially interesting for us hardcore collectors. Personally I have been selling off most of my steelbooks, and this rust problem is definitely making me more comfortable with that decision. That being said, I personally have had no issues with rust. Hard to see a grail like Mirror's Edge rusting like that...I wonder if you have thought of selling it before it gets worse. Looking forward to your 2019 video.
I knew this would happen to Mirror's Edge steelbook if I got it in the first place because I was already dealing with the problem, but I still got it regardless since it comes with that extra disc and it was quite cheap. When this first happened to me I was surprised there was very little to almost no information about this, just speculations and wrong information about what caused it. I really wanted to do a video, but for multiple reasons I just couldn't. One day you'll know why. I need better equipment to record but I can't afford anything like that at the moment. I'm glad this rust problem happened to me sooner, otherwise I'd have put a lot more efforts into owning a much bigger collection of steels and it was already painful to see what happened to my few ones. You might see more videos before 2019 lol. As for calling you "selfish", I don't even remember anymore, but hey, I've got some "enemies" on the internet already, so that's no big deal :D. Thanks for the comment.
What sprays and varnishes/wax can people recommend? I have noticed the nightmare rust appearing on some and want to save the others. What type of polish should I use? I was thinking a canubra wax. What did you use? I need to save my PS3 steelbooks.
Hi. I can't really tell. I have never tested but I know that it's really hard to prevent rust once the proccess starts. Since I've quit getting steelbooks, I never went as far as testing market products. It takes time to see real results and it should be done scientifically as well, something I can't do, I'm sorry.
@@RealSaturn thx for the reply. I initially was going to use some WD40 on the ones allready showing signs of rust but read that longterm it can be a bad idea. So now I've stated waxing with a pure wax and keeping in humid controlled zone. Any that are starting to rust I'm selling off. Also won't be collecting anymore lol. What a nightmare
@@Yahowah777 You're welcome. Your best bet if you still have to buy steelbooks in the future is to make sure to keep them factory sealed. They don't seem to rust this way, thankfully. Just make sure there are no tears to the cellophane.
Closed spaces are double edges swords but it mostly comes down to the air that's trapped inside, as well as the difference in temperatures and the overall environment where you live at. In my opinion it's usually safer when the air is able to flow rather than being trapped inside a closed space, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it's unsafe to store stuff inside closets. Without knowing the condition of the air you have inside the house it's hard to tell.
I keep mine in a closet with a dehumidifier and all my steenboks are in plastic sleeves. I still seem to get some rust but I think its slowing it down. You have any other suggestions for me? Or is what I'm doing good?
If you have a dehumidifier inside the closet, that's great as it really helps keeping the air dryer. The sleeves are not the best option but they're better than leaving them unprotected and allow you to handle them with more safety when necessary. I think that's good.
Thanks! Yeah I knew the sleeves alone won't be enough but I live in Florida where its very humid so the closet and sleeve combo was the best thing I could think of
Hi. I strongly recommend you not to use those plastic sleeves. The main problem with them is that they contain chemicals that after a while will begin to pour from them creating or accelerating rust. That's when the sleeves acquire a yellowish color. Toss them out, and clean them after you do.
Yeah I'm aware, but I use to sleeves to avoid scratches plus after about a year or 2 I change the sleeves as to avoid the effect, or is that still not a good idea?

Yeah it's really annoying, sorry it happened to you. But at least it raises awareness for the future.

Stupid question.. should i open the silica gel packets and place it beside my steelbooks on the shelf or i just put the pack on the shelf?
Thanks

Truly excellent video
Oh Thank you so much! I always thought the quality of the video was subpar but your comment is quite motivational.

It is safe to place Steelbooks or metal boxes in general in a closed space, like a closet, or that will cause rust as well?

I would avoid them all together (I am referring to the plastic bags), and replace them with the hard plastic covers.
Hello! I noticed one of your old videos with the Jak and Daxter: The Precurser Legacy Press kit, are you willing to sell it?
Hello. No, my collection is not for sale.
Just the Jak and Daxter: Precurser Legacy Press Kit, not all of your collection.
