- Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm creating on a 36x36" canvas. While creating, I talk about my imposter syndrome and what I did to overcome it.
My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. You'll see me create it from start to finish. There's no music, however, you'll hear me talk through a lot of my process and discuss products/tools that I'm using.

Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. You could not do such wonderful art if you were not an artist. Not only are you an artist but you are an INSPIRATIONAL ARTIST and also you are a THERAPEUTIC ARTIST as your videos are so comforting and lovely to listen to. Perhaps you are a MEGA-ARTIST: you get people started on their own paintings, and others can just enjoy watching you create.
Wow, that is so kind of you to say, Julia! You made my day! THANK YOU!! 🥰
It’s so beautiful! It reminds me of early spring flowers peeking through the snow ❄️ 🥰 thank you for sharing your art! 🙏💜
I love that description! Thanks, Noni!
Wonderful discussion on imposter syndrome! I've been doing art my whole life; now 58 and finished with Corporate America a few years ago. I hope one day I will feel confident enough to call myself an artist; a struggle that is ongoing. Thank you for your perspective. I really needed to hear that. LOVE YOUR ART!!!
Mary Ellen, be kind to yourself and keep on creating. As you build up confidence, you will be able to call yourself an artist easily.
Several years ago I came across one of your videos and it changed my life. "Mark Making" was a new concept for me. Such freedom! I am now working larger with a new confidence. I love watching your videos and hearing you talk about your work. Thank you!!!
Oh! I love hearing that, Carolyn! Thank you for sharing it with me. I hope that you continue growing your confidence and art skills!
I am told I am an artist. I always refer to myself as a crafter.Thank you for this video.
Love that, Collene! I think that's great!
Such an important topic! I was born an artist. I didnt realize I was self taught until my fifties. It was also that period where some fellow artists I used to have to create with taught me to say that “I am an artist!” I miss my tribe so much (all have moved away and Im alone now). That self doubt comes in all the time since I dont get to sell my art for a living. Thank you for addressing this.
You had a wonderful tribe, Valerie! You will find another one. Keep on putting messages out into the universe. It will come to be. Sending you big hugs!
I’m part of your tribe Val!! Was born an artist had people tell me to say “ I am an artist!” Comes so naturally to me it’s like second nature to me… ive had quite a few people pop up out of the woodwork lately saying “ I still have your beautiful piece!”
Still hangs in my bedroom etc! It’s a joy to hear after so many years from lots of folks I don’t see anymore just a blessing! It keeps me painting😀👍🌈
So true about imposter syndrome. It took me years to say out loud that I am an artist! Probably not until I was around 40 yrs old. It's a daily struggle to keep believing in yourself and own it....and takes even more courage to show that publicly! Thanks for sharing your light!
I know just how you feel, Marie! I'm so glad to hear that you're now able to say it and own it! Yay!!
love this and am going to go through it again. As an artist, i came from advertising / graphic design/art direction so in PLEASING OTHERS for 5 decades it's extremely painstaking to find out WHO i am and WHAT i have to SAY now in doing art for my own enjoyment. Would NEVER have thought it was this hard, no matter how "good" many say you are, you still have to find yourself.
I hear ya, Lisa! It's hard when you go from working for others and creating what THEY want to creating what YOU want. Don't give up on yourself. Keep on playing, experimenting, and having fun. It will all come together for you!
Totally understand
Thank you Betty for your pep talk. You’re giving me the boost I needed to pick up my brushes and try creating without judging my work too harshly. 🌺❤️
Yes! Be kind to yourself. You're learning. 🥰
Thank you for your honesty! What an encouragement to all of us who are prone to making "little" of our art.
You're welcome, Pauline! I think many of us go down that road!
Yes! Agree
Whether your videos are 30 mins long or 3 hrs I still watch them from start to finish three or four times. Thank you for your inspiration.
🎨
Awe...thanks, Mick! Glad you're enjoying them! I have a new one coming out tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!
Beautiful as always and I appreciate the imposter syndrome pep talk, it was exactly what I needed to hear today.❤️
Oh good! I'm glad that talk came at a good time for you. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for speaking about imposter syndrome. I just started my abstract painting journey a few months ago and logically know that it's going to take time to feel confident in my work. But sometimes the frustration of the process leads to negative self-talk. So, I think that's important to talk about!
Congratulations on my abstract painting journey! I'm glad this video was helpful to you. I think we all have too much negative self talk going on throughout the day no matter what we're doing. Noticing it and finding a way to remove it will make us happier humans!
I make art, therefore I am a artist. Love your work!
Yes!! Why is that always easier for men to say than for women? Thanks for sharing, Mark!
I have my first art show tonight and you said everything I needed to hear to motivate me and excite me for this. Thank you. Love your work and process. Thanks for sharing
I'm so glad it was helpful, Raquel! I hope your show went really well!
Miss Betty! I cannot get over How your Generosity touches my soul - I love your advice and instructions and info, you even tell us the Size of Canvas with your kind gentle voice! Thanks for inspiring me - I’m slowly gathering my paints and brushes 🤓
I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos! Thank you!
My first time watching you paint. I just heard of you from a student of your classes. I love your joyful pallet and method. Also I totally agree with the comparason game we play on ourselves. I tell my tribe constantly not to compare their work with others. Only compare with your previous work and don't expect to see your first works in a museum. When you have worn out some brushes then you have done some work to compare with your past. So don't beat yourself up. Thank you for sharing the love of what you do!
So well said, Charlotte! And I especially love what you said about wearing out brushes. Perfect! Thanks so much for watching the video!
I love watching you create Betty. Whenever I need a boost of creativity and inspiration you are good for my soul. Thank you for sharing this, the end product was beautiful. Thanks for posting the final piece. Loved it. Have fun on your vacation. Wish I was going there. Such a beautiful place.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm so happy that I can help get you wanting to create art. That makes me so happy!
Hi Betty, Love this video. I am always sheepish about saying I am an artist because I don't share much of my art with people and I have never sold anything. I just don't think most people "get" my art and I am still, after 6-7 years of painting, still trying to find my style. It's a journey not a destination.
Yesssssss---it's a journey and not a destination. You keep doing what you love!!
I just love your process. Thank you for sharing 😃😃😃
Many thanks for watching, Ann!
I find your art so uplifting. Thank you!
Sweet! I love knowing that, Elisia! Thank you!
Love watching your processes and explanation of each move and element and why you’re doing it ! Beautiful so inspirational
Thank you so much, Carolyn! I appreciate you watching the video!
I really enjoy your work. The blue colours are so peaceful .
Thank you so much!
I really love how real you are with us, Betty. Thank you for that. So refreshing!
Always! Thanks so much, Ulrike!!
I'm only half way through listening and watching and as always your conversation reveals what a warm and caring person you are which is so cheering. I can't really explain how positive and helpful it is having you create right in front of me. It's so inspirational watching your painting develop. So, I'm still waiting to hear about your explanation on the 'imposter syndrome' topic. I only recently found this syndrome on you tube, up till then I didn't know I had this! What I mean is I didn't know there was a name for my insecurity and constant doubting. Now I've heard you everything you say is so very helpful.Thank you so much for bringing the subject up and continuing to be encouraging in every way. It's making me push myself when I lack confidence and believe much more in myself. ❤
Hi Joan! Unfortunately, so many of us suffer from imposter syndrome. I hope that my sharing of information helps you move through it quickly. Keep on creating!
Thank you Betty, friend in my head! 😄 I really needed that little pep talk. I feel a little better about exploring many of the styles I see out there and seeing where that leads me. I think I've been taking myself waaaay too seriously and I just need to relax and open up to the process and evolution of my art. I appreciate you sharing not only your talent but your knowledge with humility and grace as always. Very generous of you. Thanks!
You're very welcome, Phae! We share the same road (and battles in our head!). Keep on creating and enjoying the process!
@@BettyFranksArt ❤
Hi Betty I love your art work and love watching you paint. I’m from Australia. Love abstract heaps and trying to teach myself. I so want to go BIGGER. Thanks for showing how you start your work right to the end. So so cool. X
Happy to hear that the video was helpful to you! You can do it!!
I subscribed to your RUclips channel because I sense that I would learn a lot from your experiences
You're the best, Lorrane! Thank you for being here!
Glad a video of yours popped up….Your use of black after the mark making is something I need to try…haven’t tried that dark before.
Hi Elizabeth! I love adding the dark colors at the beginning so that it adds more depth to the painting. I hope you enjoyed this video and that you'll check out my other ones, too!
Haha, you know what was funny, Betty? When at the end you rummage through your little box of crayons and pencils, and dropped one or more, I ACTUALLY BENT DOWN AND LOOKED UNDER MY CHAIR. Just spontaneously. THAT"S how into watching you I was. (Or is it age??!) Bahaha.
Hahaha....I LOVE that! 😍
Lovely painting once again! Thank you for your encouraging words on building confidence, practice and looking back on my previous paintings.
I'm so glad the video was helpful to you, Norma! Keep on creating!
I having been painting nearly everyday or so since the start of COVID. I sold a few things to friends and friends of friends. Everyone who sees my work is very enthusiastic-at least to my face. The inventory is building up and I don't have space in my small home to store too many 24x36 canvases. I decided to go for it. I had a business card with part of one of my paintings on one side and the word "Artist" under my name. I also paid someone to do a website. I notice a big change in attitude when I hand people the card. They seem to regard this as a legitimate business now. All those classes in college finally mean something. Thanks, Betty for your inspiration.
I stored everything which does not fit the space on the walls under the bed. I started with 24by36 and moved to 16X20. In my opinion, easier to store and sell, at least till I will get rich and famous.
@@simplyme135 p
Hi Caroline! It's wonderful that you sold some of your pieces. Storage is always an issue when you're creating lots and not getting a chance to sell. Keep putting your art out there and keep on creating!
I love that idea!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and process.
It’s nice to be inspired and be surprised all the time. ❤️
You are so welcome, Hazel! Glad you enjoyed watching this video!
Betty, nobody mixes and harmonizes color the way you do and you are the E-Ching Master of creating happy and yet restful colors. I think each piece is another unique garden. I love your style. Thank you for sharing. 🥰❤️💕
Wow, thank you! You are super kind, Tamara!
EVERY artist should study color theory because you can mix MUD very easily. Cadmium red for instance won't get you purples as it already has yellow in it, warm and cool colors are different in mixing. Great resource; BOOK: "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green: How to Mix the Color You Really Want- Every Time" by Michael Wilcox
You're the best, Lisa! I just ordered the book. I love mixing colors, but I would love to learn more about the best way to mix colors that I want. THANK YOU so much for sharing this with me!!
@@BettyFranksArt it's a HUGE asset! I used to sell prepress films and printing after 40 years in advertising and artists are amazed how little of their colors they can get through the 4-color printing process so understanding what turns to MUD and WHY is huge, understanding what happens when you add milk to a glass of water helps when you want to lighten a color WITHOUT WHITE, Things like toning down a color with a little of it's complimentary color...science things like how SHADOWS are formulated by more of the color, complimentary color and blue is such a "GOD thing". Like anatomy, It's the crucial tool to make good art no matter how boring it is. One day we will be in heaven and realize that our human eye could not see ALL THE SPECTRUMS of colors there in light while here on earth. MORE COLORS!
Great info, Lisa Vento, thank you!
@@lisavento7474 Thanks, Lisa! I know I have so much more to learn!
I discovered how I had been critical and doubting of my own free mark making watching you develop your work. Thank you , I really feel like a door has been stepped through. I just over think way too much.
You have great advice and I really appreciate your points of view. Always wonderful to listen to ❤️
Thank you so much, Michelle! That really means a lot to me!
Stunning as usual Betty. Love your narrative. Enjoy your trip.
Many thanks! I'm on my trip now and loving it!
Really enjoyed this video. I've taken your course and always painted fairly small. This has inspired me to go bigger!
Awesome! I hope you have fun!
Been watching you for a few years now. Absolutely love your work! I'm a watercolour hat but like you, love flowers and nature so my paintings reflect that too. Never tire of your work !
You are super kind, Denise! I so appreciate you following my art adventures all these years!
Fabulous encouragement, Betty. 💕
So glad you liked it. Thank you for watching, Peggy!
Ps your paintings are All So BEAUTIFUL 😍
You are super kind! Thanks!
It's gorgeous! Great. I always follow you with great pleasure.
I so appreciate that, Piera! Thank you!
Betty, Betty, Betty, you've done it again!!! Just love watching the layers build and then seeing the 'always surprising' end result. LOL I've started using my Betty's Bundle in a journal and it's been inspiring and fun, slow going but fun. The Nova paint pigments are creamy and beautiful and I love the texture. My 4ml plastic roll is waiting to be assigned to a wall but I am not in a hurry. You're so right about the neutrals making the brights come alive. Works every time. Thank you for your videos ... I am still binge watching (or should I say investing in me!!!).
Yay! Sounds like you're having fun and making plans for more fun! Thanks so much for watching and for buying my bundle!
May finally have a favorite of all your wonderful works - I think this is it :)
Oh so cool! Love that! Thanks, Yope!
I've never seen a Betty Franks Painting that I didn't (Totally Love). Amazing work !!!💙👍 You should have at least one color that (you've created W/ Nova) you've been using them for quite awhile.....amazing as usual.
Awe...that makes me super happy to hear! Thank you!!

Wohoo! Love it!! Thanks so much, Wendy!
Its always a great pleasure to watch you painting Betty. 😍❤
I’m glad I just found your videos. Love your mark making. I use small brushes too. But now I am at home with a broken wrist, I am using oil pastels and I’m really liking them. Thanks!
I'm sorry to hear about your broken wrist, Lori. I hope you heal quickly. In the meantime, it's great that you found a medium to try while recovering!

Thanks for all the great information you've shared on your thought processes and ideas. So very helpful with the Art Journey we are on. Covid dose not help at all. Best Wishes Betty you are Amazeing. Love all your Paintings.
🥰❤
You are so welcome, Wendy! Yes, covid doesn't make things easier, right?! Thanks so much for watching!
I also ALWAYS forget what this scraper thingie is called, haha. Catalyst! Thanks Betty. This is so great again!
Yes! That "thingy"!!! 😜 I always forget that name!!
It's a pleasure to see your process. Beautifully done.
Thank you very much, Fernanda! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
You were saying that sometimes you like the calming effect that neutrals impart to your painting - I so agree! For me, using too many bright colors is confusing to my eye, and I find that neutrals used in the right places add a lot of perspective, especially near the top, where usually you want things to look further away. Although it's abstract and perspective is perhaps less important, my eye is trained to recognize distance and wants it to be there anyway. My eyes like to travel INTO a painting, as well as around it. Currently learning just how to go about that, waiting for that "lightbulb!" moment of discovery....
I love how you want depth in your painting through visual distance. I often (subconsciously) aim for that, too. Thanks for sharing, Yope!
I have been using my bundle that I purchased, I love them. I just went back a couple of days ago to purchase more colors, I got the mid century and pearl bundles. I love how well the paints mix I did some painterly gel prints last night with your colors, and wow they turned out beautiful. Thank you for your channel and sharing.
Oh! That sounds like so much fun! Thanks for buying my bundle!
I love your suggestion just to make 50 paintings to improve because I definitely have some imposter syndrome. Thank you so much Betty!
Glad it was helpful! Have fun creating, Lindy!
Unique , You are really going for it . Great work .
Many thanks, Peter! I appreciate you watching!
Love the advice about comparing oneself to one's own personal progress. It's such an easy trap to get stuck in, especially in the beginning. I like that it can be reframed to I just need to practice more to find and improve MY style! True about the tribe as well.
Yes to everything you said, Debbie! Thanks so much for sharing that with me!
Betty, I love your work. Thank you so much for sharing how you do what you do! ❤️❤️
You are most welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks as always for sharing your process! I bought the Betty's Bundle and am having fun with all the colors! Thank you!!! Have a wonderful time in Croatia!

Betty! As always I am loving your art and also your teaching and everything about your videos. I find them almost therapeutical. A big thank you ☺️💖
Super happy to hear that, Silvia! Thanks so much for sharing!
I always shied away from abstract art but I’ve recently realised it’s a wonderful thing to look at and a joy to try so I’ve turned my thinking around. I’ve just enrolled in your accordion art course…I’m excited to be embracing something new😊
Wonderful! I felt the same way many years ago, Theresa. It's like all of a sudden I was loving abstract art. I realized that before that I wasn't seeing abstract art that spoke to my heart. I think you're going to love the course! Thank so much for signing up!
This one is a Wow. I love it.

I just ordered your bundle because those colors make my heart sing 🎶 ❤
Yay! Glad to hear that the videos are helping you loosen up! Love Zentagles! So fun!
I dont clean my brushes sometimes and love the texture I get from the dried paint the next time I use them.
I love that!! I especially love that you're not afraid to ruin a brush for the sake to trying something different.

So relaxing, just watching your process! The colors so lovely.👌🏼
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching, Vivian!
I always love your work, Betty. I just had a thought though about the paints in the open jars. Do you ever have a problem with them drying up overtime?
Yes and no. It usually takes a while for them to dry out, but most of the time I use it up before it dries up. I try to keep on the lids on. However, I get a bit lazy and grab paint directly out of the jar when I need it. Thanks so much for watching, Sarah!
Excellent mentoring advice!!!❤❤
Thanks so much for watching the video to the end, Angela!

Speaking of what colors you use.... at the 5:30 min mark when you are talking about Nova there are 3 pints on the left of your table. I believe it's Indian Yellow and Hot Pink. Please tell me the 3rd color that is in the middle. I can't identify it on Nova's site. Thanks so much!! ❤️
Hi Tina! I believe they are Indian Yellow, Pyrrole Red, and Quinacridone Red. Thanks for watching! www.bettyfranksart.com/favorite-nova-color-paints
Hey Betty, just discovered you and subscribed. Great sharing on this video, painting is brilliant. I've got a corporate America background, as well, and fully understand that "too much going on in your head" feeling when a major event looms large, like a big trip or finishing a class semester with an exhibition. Under paintings still amaze me. They seem to add vibrant energy somehow, even when they're not readily apparent. I'm returning to my art career after several years, and yes, imposter syndrome has been a battle. But I'm diving in anyway.
Hi Belinda! We have similar backgrounds (including having imposter syndrome!). I think you're on the right track. Keep on creating!!
Enjoying the video
Many thanks, Cathy!

so much good stuff on here apart from the actual pic. Yes practice is all. i have been doing a personal 365 collages mission this year and i am sure better now than when i started. you also mention courses such as your own and they can be light bulb moments. thanks to you. you lightened a sleepless night in uk where like much of the world life has begun to seem a rather frightening grind. best R
Hi Robert! That is so cool that you've been doing a collage project! And, I bet you have learned so much throughout the year about techniques and about yourself. Love that!
Love watching your process! Curious about the one ear bud. I also noticed that you have Merch through Pixels, is this new? Can you talk about this in a future blog?
Hi Janet! I often wear one ear bud so that I can switch to the other one when the one I'm wearing runs out of juice. Plus, I like being able to hear other things going on (like if someone comes to my door).
I have been with Fine Art America/Pixels for about 3+ years. I don't talk about it much (maybe I should!). I like having my art available on products. They're a good price point and fun for folks who already have their walls filled with art.
Thanks for the idea of talking about it on a vlog in the future. I'll add that to my list!
