    It’s not about preserving anything, they just don’t want poor people right around the corner when they pay tens of thousands of dollars in property taxes. Also, don’t want your children infiltrating and benefitting from said resources too.

      @@eyebitez You don't deserve so much security for any kind of investment.
      You don't get to dictate where others can live, if they have the resources to live somewhere they should be able to. That's the free market.
      You already don't pay the property taxes that you should actually pay for your house, you probably can't afford to live here if you did. You should move. (not you, homeowners in general in this area).
      This causes increased rents and indirectly the price of goods in your area.
      You look like a donkey to everyone outside of your elite little club of homeowners that struck gold for buying a house in the right area of the country, no skill, just stupid luck.

    I live here, but rent, and I love the neighborhood. But this is 1000% a NIMBY move to keep all us poors out.
    For anyone not familiar with this specific neighborhood btw, the starting price for these houses is 2M, most sell for more.

      @@nz6241in what fantasy world do you live in where this is considered okay? Most of that stock is (maybe) renovated 1940's housing that was never intended to last this long in the first place.
      Besides, 1.5M with the rates these days requires 300k as a 20% down payment, then basically another 8k A MONTH for your mortgage, NOT including property taxes, insurance, and (likely) an HOA. That's likely double the cost it is to rent something comparable in the same area(s).
      Again, how is that okay?

    I used to rent an apartment just around the corner from this neighborhood, and it was part of my regular bike route for years. It’s an old lady who is afraid of change. There is nothing in that neighborhood that is historically that important. Fine let the city make only her individual house historic and let everyone else enjoy all the great changes that come around since her house was built. Her house can become an historic home for people to tour and be a comparison how Wilma flinstone chose to live compared to the Rubbles and all her other neighbors who embraced progress & change.

    these segregated neighborhoods are the reason for high price of housing and lack of housing. for a 100 years they ve keep it segregated ad now want to make it official. san mateo county got as many people as sf but is about 10 times bigger. build in san mateo and marin. dont let them continue with the legacy of segregation. have the state go in.

      ??? It looks like every other 1960s-era subdivision in the whole country. Show me the historic church or mission. Show me the historic town square. There isn't one.
      The reality is that this neighborhood is a 10 minute walk to a Caltrain station, so it makes perfect sense to allow more housing there.

    as a bay area native i hate to see beautiful old neighborhoods like this be destroyed in the name of increasing housing units - its bs.
    allowing property owners to subdivide and build up to 4 residential units on their limited lots will decimate the character of this place with not only quadruple the number of residents but also the number of vehicles parked on its streets. this is no way to create housing density. i applaud the effort to preserve it. the greed lies with homeowners who favor being allowed to build additional units
    they can sell for megabucks . didnt they choose to buy in baywood because of its charm and character ? then why do they now want to destroy it ? smh

      So what you are really saying is that only a shoddily built 100 year old Spanish house is good architecture? Virtually every architect in the world will disagree with you. These homes were simply the cookie cutter designs from a hundred years ago. There is nothing valuable about them.

    I live just outside Baywood and see both sides. Being nearby its good for us no matter how they decide. These people and their grandparents built this neighborhood so its fine to take a stand. But nobody likes being told what they can't do with their property. The city will have the last word Im sure.

    I grew up in Los Altos. Between 1987 and now Every home where I lived has been torn down.... near the high school Our home cost $37,000 in 1966. last year it sold as a knock down for $4.3 MILLION. It's happening all over the place and now instead of having homes like you see in this story they are all modern looking crap

    I totally agree with preserving it, I live here and recently we had some people buy homes and changed them to something so ghastly, I understand that it could be more expensive to keep the character, but a few
    Of us a ready to pitch in to do that

    Baywood is a beautiful neighborhood and wish I could live there too. Honestly what is wrong with people wanting to preserve the character of their neighborhood. We Americans travel to Europe to see exactly that…historic buildings.

    Leave the neighborhood alone it's beautiful! Bring in high density housing will destroy it! That's what the city of Fremont did years ago! Now that's all Fremont is! Not to mention the old nieborhoods that were pretty nice old nieborhoods. And the city allowed home owners to build hugh homes along with the older homes? Looks like hell! That's Fremont for u? Hope the folks in San Mateo get their way and don't let what happened to Fremont happened to them!
