Blur 2013 #27: Slaying the Titan

  • Last week, I fired up Blur and dropped into a random lobby with just enough time to pick my car without seeing who was in it. About halfway through the first lap, Xcon's name emerged from the retard pack and chased down my mercy start-induced early lead. Fighting cold hand jitters and some bad luck to us both, I swiped the first race and kicked off a marathon lobby in which he went on a tear and Countersel and I fought to steal a race whenever possible.
This session was a pretty big deal to me. I flipped from PS3 to Xbox 360 exactly two years ago, and I've run into him maybe 3 or 4 total times, and usually not for long. I believe this game has always been at its best when chasing someone truly faster and having to adapt to both new strategies and the high pressure of performing without error. Xcon gets a lot of shit (deservingly) for his running pastime of dropping out of messy lobbies to keep his leaderboard statistics tidy, but you're a fool if you don't think he's really as good as those stats would indicate. As the Blur scene enters its twilight (felled by a marquee Rockstar title again, no less), there's plenty of contention and posturing amongst at the top as to who is truly fastest. Dakor and Raptor have the most risk-aggressive lines, Kuru demonstrates superior adaptive tactics, Reality handles every vehicle in the game with adept versatility, and Seamonky innovated many tactics over the years that are commonplace today. But Xcon will go down as the best because of his discipline and consistency, the same skills that made him one of the game's top drivers as it morphed from a strict no-boost beta to the chain drifting era.
I basically raced with 3 goals in mind: Steal a few races, keep him from going x5 (failed) and get better. I had a few opportunities to capitalize with wins and gave them away due to sloppiness, but also took a few via frantic comebacks. This was just a really fun day.
Soundtrack: I felt like putting my collection of deep house to use, so here's 56 minutes of smooth groove to contrast the chaos onscreen.

They were some fun races. Its races like these that still make this game fun.

It looks like you are in good shape again! 23:46 was a strange car reaction.

Nice. I also like to race people that are REALLY faster than me. Mainly because it makes me race better than usual. Haha and also love stealing a race once in 10 tries :)
    I liked all 56 minutes!
