Thanks, Wink. I don't know why this pilot was passed on. I liked the categories and pre-Internet, they seem very challenging. I like how the host had to work up a sweat during the bonus game. The one takeaway: the audience helping out the contestants by inadvertently acknowledging some of the correct answers in advance (I Was A Teenage Werewolf, The Grassroots). I know they were excited, but they should have just keep silent and let the contestants figure out whether any of the answers were right or wrong. However, the host did address that near the end of the game.
Shouldn't have been a surprise Mary knew "A votre sante" since she's from Montreal. I always thought Baklava was a Greek dessert not a Turkish dessert but still a wrong answer for game purposes.

Did a little research on Tony Hernandez (I'm sure it's the same guy) and found an interesting story: he played a commentator in Rocky III, they initially offered him $300 for it, but he'd have to join the screen actor's guild. He found out it would cost him $250 to do that so he turned it down. They bumped the offer up to $600 so he accepted. To this day, he still gets royalty checks for a few bucks calls it "lunch money". 😅

I enjoyed this pilot and would have watched as a series, however it has flaws, the main one of course being the host switching the answers in the bonus round instead of the contestant. This wasted too much time. The other flaws were a prize not revealing when it should have, and the audience shouting answers. I would assume this would have been taken care of had it gone to series, but you don’t leave errors in a pilot. Tony Hernandez was a little stiff at times, but he ran the game well and there were hints of his personality showing through. I think he would have had a chance to loosen up and be a decent host had this sold.

This one was pretty good and honestly the concept is kind of similar to Wipeout, the one Peter Tomarken hosted in the late '80s. In the sense that you have to find the right answers out of a board of answers that are right and wrong.
Three fingers brown was a bit deceiving, there was also a baseball player Mordecai "three finger" Brown: A pitcher from the early 1900s who lost parts of 2 fingers in a farming accident. Twinkle Toes Selkirk incidentally is also a baseball player.
There should have been a better way to move the answers between the two boards. It’s not fair to depend on the host fumbling with the tiles and wasting time.
The other two groups are Stealer's wheel (best known for "stuck in the middle with you") and I think the dolls which was the original name of the New York Dolls. Cold Duck is a wine, Alice B. Toklas was an American writer.
Not bad. I would tweak a few things to make it work. Its a little disorganized and I don't like some aspects of the main game but nothing that can't be fixed before its picked up. The one big issue that has to be changed though is the final round. The host of the show slapping cardboard onto a board as the contestant is yelling at him what she wants on there is ridiculous. Give the contestant control over that. Not the host. I've never seen something more silly and unfair in my life. He was like what? And the cards were falling off the board and the audience was yelling as the host was looking for what she said? That was ridiculous. That would have to have been changed if the show was picked up. Sadly it wasn't but it had potential.
I had the same thoughts. The concept was used in Wipeout, as I think you've seen in other comments by now. Contestants had full control of the bonus game, there was no "toss up" question which was just a weird thing to have in comparison to what Wipeout did, and though the prize board was cool in concept, I think it slowed the game down somewhat, so glad they didn't do that in Wipeout. Didn't hurt that Wipeout had a more than capable host in Peter Tomarken, as well.
The bonus game was a precursor to Wipeout’s bonus game.
The whole show is very similar to Wipeout, with contestants searching for correct answers from a list of possibles.
