The dunning Kruger effect of credit cards is starting off with Chase and thinking it's for beginners, and then getting Amex, and then going back to Chase as a more experience credit card user and realizing that the convenience and the greater point value of Chase makes the trifecta the ideal core credit card setup.
I still think Venture X + Savor duo is the best You are getting paid $30 to have the duo on top of everything the Venture X comes with Yes because you can't transfer to Hyatt the points aren't as valuable as Chase, but it's still REALLY good
If you are spending less than $1,111 per month with 3x freedom unlimited everywhere then you’re better to have the $200 bonus instead. Thats the amount you need to spend to get more than $200 the first year. Unless you do a lot of dining or travel with it.
Additionally, I’ve seen the $200 sign up bonus come with 5% cash back on grocery & gas station purchases for the first year. If most of your purchases fall within these two categories, you are still getting 5% versus 3% (the 1.5% base + 1.5% cash back match). So the $200 sign up bonus might be better in that situation as well.
Let's say I spent on 10k on 1.5% category that will give me 150$ cashback, and 2k on 3% category that will give me 60$ cashback, So cashback becomes 210$ and chase will match it. BUT the thing which is not highlighted is, If we take the other option of chase, where we get 200$ as welcome bonus which is effectively the same. Only if the spending on this card, is more than this is when we can get maybe a bit more, but otherwise its the same. Let me know if otherwise.
Can you speak more on how long to wait in between getting each card? I got the CSP back in September, is it too soon to grab my next card? How long until you apply for the 3rd?
I got all 3 this year. I got the csp first. Then the flex 2 months after. Got denied called the reconsideration line and got approved right away. The unlimited 3 months later. I got denied. Called them twice the next day and got denied both times. Called a third time and finally got approved with a 1k limit. Just make sure you have a good reason as to why you’re applying so often. I told him i just got a new home and wanted to furnish the place. Helps that i have a strong income and a decent credit score.
While it's possible to get all 3 in the same year, it's best to spread your applications out at least a year for each card to maximize each cards sign up bonus

For which purchases is it advantageous to use freedom unlimited over sapphire reserve during the double cash back offer? How about after the year runs up? I wonder too if there’s a down side to completely not using my preferred for a whole year and after the year is up when to use each. Thanks!
So you effectively need to spend $10k so Chase can match it to get the equivalent of the standard $200 sign up bonus? I probably would spend over 10k by making my primary card, but for people not spending 10k in one year would the standard offer be a better deal?
Looking at rewards from Freedom Unlimited and Sapphire Preferred, the point multipliers seem the same for travel and dining but you said Sapphire Preferred has a 25% bonus. How do I transfer Freedom Unlimited points to Sapphire Preferred?
Hi John, I used your link to open the Unlimited card. I wonder if the expenses of my authorized user would be matched as well by the end of the promotion.

I do have some big spending coming up so I can reach the bonus fast on the CIU. I am just weary on the business card as I have Never had one. Any hint on when this offer will be ending? I'm working on the SW Companion at the moment...so, I don't want to put that in 5/24 jeopardy till I get all the needed SW cards.
I am considering over four different credit cards, with two being my primary options and the remaining two serving as backups in case my initial choices are declined. Would you recommend submitting all the applications concurrently for approval, or should I be concerned that applying for all four cards at once might result in four individual hard inquiries on my credit report? I'm worried about my credit score being negatively impacted four times, even though the applications are made within the same 24-hour period.
I've had the CSP for 1 1/2 years, and the CFU since last February. Still don't see the value adding the 3rd card.... Problem I have with Chase is all the Categories overlap.
This trifecta is getting outdated compared to other issuers. Chase really needs 3x gas and 3x groceries to be competitive in this market. Online groceries is worthless to most people.
Depends on your income and your age. If you are 20+ making a large amount of money, or you bank with Chase (checking, savings, etc.) you will likely get approved for the cards without a long credit history. If you’re younger or don’t bank with Chase, or you have a young credit history (under 2 years) you may not get approved. It all depends on your credit score, your credit history, and if you bank with Chase previously. Exceptions obviously apply.
Could someone provide an answer for my questions. I just ordered an Amazon credit card back in December 1. I want to open maybe one or two more cards right now. Is it okay to open it because I already have a hard inquiry on it? Planning on opening the Capitol one venture X and Amex gold. I'm not sure if the credit card inquiry lasts 14. Hey guys, I opened a Chase freedom unlimited today. I can open another credit card because that would be my fifth card for the last 24 months. I am not sure if I should get Chase Saphire or Southwest since I am not ready to spend 4k in the next three months?
I've had the unlimited for just over a year. I'm thinking I'm going to call and try to get it product changed to an og freedom card and then reapply for another unlimited to get another bonus

A little confused about this. Why is the Freedom Flex needed when it is almost the same as the Unlimited (except the rotating thing)? It sounds to me like this can still be done basically the same way with just the Unlimited and Preferred together
Hey! I’m wondering if after I just opened a checking account/debit card would that affect me trying to get the freedom credit card? & how long should I wait? It’s been a month & my credit score is 760, thank you!
I have the same question. I have the Freedom Unlimited, CSP and now I’m undecided on the Flex because I also have the Amex Blue cash preferred which gives 6% on grocery
@@gaeltovar4047 my first one was capital one quicksilver, which required no credit at all but the credit line was an abysmal $300. I used it regularly for about 5 months and built my credit score from 0 to 680 and applied for flex and got it.
Hi John, your video was very informative. I just got approved for Chase Sapphire Reserve. I also have Chase Freedom Ultimate. My family of 4 is planning in going to Philippines in December 2024. I'll be buying the plane ticket soon as it opens. Since I don't have points yet and the cost estimate is roughly $10k round trip, what's your strategy? I'm new to travel points. Pls advise. Thank you :)
I’m not John, but maybe look into the Chase Business Ink Unlimited (which you don’t need a formal business to apply for or hold). It has a $750 sign on bonus, contingent upon $6k of spend in the first 3 months. And some other nice perks ;)
Can I get the Chase Freedom Unlimited as my first ever credit card with no prior Credit History? I’m about to turn 18 so I’d like to know my options as to what I should sign up for.
Highly unlikely. You’ll need a credit score ideally over 680+. Get a secured or student credit card first. Pay on time and in full always. Then look back at this card in 6-12 months
So I want to get my first travel card for 2024, do you recommend starting with the sapphire preferred to get my points, or should I get one of the Freedom Cards and then get the Preferred in 2025.
Definitely get freedom unlimited right now to take advantage of the bonus. Then in about 6 months time, provided you fall under 5/24..go ahead and get preferred or reserve.
Do you have other cards you in stack? If you have a strong credit profile and understand how to use credit cards I don't see a point in waiting to get the preferred. But if you don't have much experience or other cards I would go Freedom Unlimited first. You can decide between the 2 bonuses (public offer for $200 after $500 spend or elevated unlimited cash back match in first 12 months)
@@johnsfinancetipsYes I have a good background with my credit cards, credit score of 770. I will go with the freedom unlimited to build up those cash back rewards and in some time in 2025 I will apply for the preferred to transfer my points!
$45 is the effective annual fee because the CSP has a $50 hotel credit. So they annual fee for that effectively is $95 - $50 = $5. Hope that makes sense!
I just got the chase unlimited and I’m going for the trifecta. My fiancé does not have a credit card, where should she start? Our goal is to have a diverse credit portfolio
Does she have a credit score or any credit history? If not, I would recommend the discover it secured card. If she is a student in school however I would apply for Chase freedom rise card.
@@austinbailey5322 if she doesn't qualify for Chase, you can use the discover pre-approval tool and the capital one pre-approval tool. If she's pre-approved it basically gives a 99% chance that her application would be approved. It just takes maybe 6-12 months with the first card to build a better history and higher score and then she'll be ready to start applying for better cards
Start with the Chase Rise card or Discover IT card. Chase Rise will introduce her to the Chase ecosystem that is relatively easy to be approved for, and the Discover IT card is VERY easy to acquire for any beginners.
If the end goal is to build a diverse portfolio, then you can have her apply for the capital one ecosystem. Data points as well as several videos suggest that capital one loves sub prime customers. If hesitant on whether she will be accepted or not, there is a pre-qualification tool for their cards. I would opt for capital one platinum, quicksilver or savor one.
Also, I just got the freedom unlimited and it is showing the public offer in my chase account. Is there a way to get the limited time offer even though I have already received the card? I have not hit the public offer yet
Just got approved through the affiliate link yesterday. Where do you see the offer in your account? I can't seem to see if the double cash-back offer has been applied
I signed up under the new promotion using the link provided and have been using the CFU card like crazy. However, it has not shown any doubling whatsoever. Does ajyone know of this will be applied at the end of one year? Or should i be calling customer service to find out why my categories arent being doubled?
*John* (or anyone else), do you think the freedom unlimited card would be worth it for me if I only spend $400-600 per month on my credit card? I think getting the $200 default bonus would just be better in that case.
Because at least, I would be spending $400 per month, which is $4,800 a year. That would only give me back $144 in cash back if every purchase was 3% back.
While on the positive side, spending $600 a month, which is $7,200 in a year, if always at 5% cash back, I can make $360 cash back. But I highly doubt I will hit that number.
When I applied (a month ago), the sign up bonus included $200 bonus & 5% cash back on grocery and gas for a year. So if most of your spendings fall in those two categories, that offer will be a better deal for sure!
Question, I got approved for the CFU in November 2023. I may have missed it during the video but I see transactions only get 1.5% everywhere. Is this 3% going to be applied from 2024 or as soon as I start using?
Great question. So this takes all the points earned over the first 12 months and gives it to you at the end. Assuming you applied with a link that was giving the unlimited cash back match offer
Is there a way to take advantage of the sign up bonus if I already have the freedom unlimited for over a year? I am also hesitant on opening the other two credit cards because I plan on buying a house soon so I dont want my credit score to drop below 800
Applying for a card only lowers your score by 5 points max. In addition, anything above 750 is considered amazing credit so you don't need to worry at all for your house purchase.
I admire your yearning to stay at or above 800, but there isn’t really a big difference between 750 and 850 to banks when applying for loans. You’ll get the same rates at an 800 score as those for someone with 850, for example. Of course, you should only get credit cards you’re comfortable acquiring and can naturally acquire value from them, but the benefit of this combo is very strong.
You can apply for another Freedom Unlimited bonus 24 months after having your first one. As for homes I believe any over 760 or 780 is qualifying you for tier A rates. I agree on being cautious in the months leading up to getting a loan app out
How do I know that I got the affiliate link bonus? I applied with the link, was denied, but then called the reconsideration hotline and got approved, so I’m wondering if I still got the bonus!
@@lasoota555 Think about it, Vegas offers perks, points, and prizes if you gamble. Credit cards do the same song and dance albeit by different means. They make money, when you spend money. @@lasoota555 Let’s break this down: both Vegas and credit card companies are masters at luring people in. They entice you with sign-up bonuses, giving you a taste of the rewards to come. But here's the catch-these "prizes" only accumulate if you spend more. The rules? They’re often confusing, even vague, designed to prey on human weaknesses. Sure, you can become an expert and try to game the system, but in the end, the house always wins. The reality is, we’re paying for these so-called "points." Vendors factor the cost into their prices, and credit card companies take an additional cut by offering you "rewards." Just look at the numbers: Visa made $33.35 billion, and Las Vegas casinos raked in $9 billion last year. They’re not making that money because they’re losing. So, let me ask you-who really is? Can I get the Chase Freedom Unlimited as my first ever credit card with no prior Credit History? I’m about to turn 18 so I’d like to know my options as to what I should sign up for.
did you figure it out? i just turned 18.
Highly unlikely. You’ll need a credit score ideally over 680+. Get a secured or student credit card first. Pay on time and in full always. Then look back at this card in 6-12 months
@@johnsfinancetipsAny secured credit cards you recommend?
So I want to get my first travel card for 2024, do you recommend starting with the sapphire preferred to get my points, or should I get one of the Freedom Cards and then get the Preferred in 2025.
Definitely get freedom unlimited right now to take advantage of the bonus. Then in about 6 months time, provided you fall under 5/24..go ahead and get preferred or reserve.
Question does the spend $500 get $200 back in cash back count as the end of the year match?
@@vincentcolon7216
Can I buy an hour of your time for help ?!
any kind of bonus for us that already have the Freedom Unlimited?
No you can cancel and reapply every 2 years if you want the bonus again
If I already have the unlimited card can I open another and get the bonus still?
Not sure, but you can try the product change route.
Would using the link give me an instant decision? Good video btw and thanks for the heads up on this offer
Yes, it does. I applied for the card yesterday and as soon as I submitted my application, I got approved.
John would you do this Chase Trio instaed of getting the capital one quicksilver and the AMEX Gold??
Thank you.
Got my card!
Do you still get the $200 cash back with this offer? I don't see it stated anywhere on the affliate link
The $200 is a public offer. If you want that over the double cash back offer, just go to the site normally without the affiliate link.
Is the offer over ?
Hi John! How can I get all 3 cards for 45$ annual fee instead of 95$? Thank you!
$45 is the effective annual fee because the CSP has a $50 hotel credit. So they annual fee for that effectively is $95 - $50 = $5. Hope that makes sense!
Is the cash back match paid back each month or after 12 months
12 months
12 months
The 12 months
I just got the chase unlimited and I’m going for the trifecta. My fiancé does not have a credit card, where should she start? Our goal is to have a diverse credit portfolio
Does she have a credit score or any credit history? If not, I would recommend the discover it secured card. If she is a student in school however I would apply for Chase freedom rise card.
@@Khaja94 she has a 680 and out of school. Her score comes from a car and loan payment
You could try calling customer service
Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to swap out offers. But it never hurts to ask
@@johnsfinancetips Update: I contacted customer service and they will not match welcome offers
Just got approved through the affiliate link yesterday. Where do you see the offer in your account? I can't seem to see if the double cash-back offer has been applied
Potatoes and tomatoes 😃
I signed up under the new promotion using the link provided and have been using the CFU card like crazy. However, it has not shown any doubling whatsoever. Does ajyone know of this will be applied at the end of one year? Or should i be calling customer service to find out why my categories arent being doubled?
They do it at the end of the year
*John* (or anyone else), do you think the freedom unlimited card would be worth it for me if I only spend $400-600 per month on my credit card? I think getting the $200 default bonus would just be better in that case.
Because at least, I would be spending $400 per month, which is $4,800 a year. That would only give me back $144 in cash back if every purchase was 3% back.
While on the positive side, spending $600 a month, which is $7,200 in a year, if always at 5% cash back, I can make $360 cash back. But I highly doubt I will hit that number.
Chase is matching your cashback earned at the end of the 12 months, which means your 144 in cashback would become 288 at the end of the year.
@mickjay933 points add up man. It takes time, but what you can do to get a decent jump is get the sapphire preferred to boost your total
When I applied (a month ago), the sign up bonus included $200 bonus & 5% cash back on grocery and gas for a year. So if most of your spendings fall in those two categories, that offer will be a better deal for sure!
That thumbnail something serious…
Question, I got approved for the CFU in November 2023. I may have missed it during the video but I see transactions only get 1.5% everywhere. Is this 3% going to be applied from 2024 or as soon as I start using?
Great question. So this takes all the points earned over the first 12 months and gives it to you at the end. Assuming you applied with a link that was giving the unlimited cash back match offer
Thank you for the info. I applied it in person so should I assume I did not get it?
I wish Chase offered 2-4x on gas.
New to credit cards and that’s only thing holding me back from chase. No gas rewards
Is this still working now ?
This sounds like Vegas, ways to separate you from your money. But yeah, I'm in it.
What a dumb analogy 😭😭😭
@@lasoota555 Think about it, Vegas offers perks, points, and prizes if you gamble. Credit cards do the same song and dance albeit by different means. They make money, when you spend money. They make you play these no-so-straight-forward games designed for you not to fully understand or wear you down as to not participate. You can maximize your odds, but like Vegas the house never loses. You might THINK it's a dumb analogy, but what's your take?
Maybe not so dumb after all.
