I have just taken your advice and started looking at music differently. Tracking the chords. Mindful of Barry's remarks about Bach - I am a beginner - I chose Prelude in C. Here it is I ii V I vi ii V 1. My entire view of Jazz Harmony is altered for ever. No More hitting movement is the way to go. Thank you
Those substitutions are something I did not already know even if it is something that makes sense. Really neat stuff I'm gonna figure out some economical positions on the fretboard for.
@@JazzSkills Specifically the II-V to the III but resolving to I. I have been teaching myself with youtube and mostly do solo recording so I miss out on a lot of basics that probably seem so second nature it would be weird to mention. I appreciate your teaching style, thanks for all the tips!
Thank you!! Use the 3 a lot but never thought about the 2-5 of it. Great !!! Always learning!! And then using the 2-5 of 3 to 1 instead. Really nice!!!
The 3 I refer to is the 3rd chord in the diatonic scale. Eg. In the key of C major, the 3 chord is Em which can be used as a substitute for C which is the 1 chord. Also the 6 chord (Am ) is a sub for C. I should have used Roman numerals to be more correct. Sorry. I II iii IV V vi vii
This blew my mind. I went to music school, and I have been watching RUclips‘s for years, & for some reason never came across the concept in level 3.

Thanks Bruce. Like you, I'm always learning. That's the wonderful thing about jazz! I wish you well with your playing.
What's a 3?

Hope you understand me now, jojo?
Good video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you.
Hi Shan. Do we join your Jazz lesion by joining RUclips
Thank you, do you have another video on the functions of all chords?
I have lessons on here about important progressions but look out for my I VI II V substitutions lesson coming next week. I think you'll like that!
What do you mean by "function"?
What software are you using that you transposed so quickly?
