Jesus… your channel is absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for the work you put out here on RUclips. Every video I’ve watched of yours so far has provided me a very unique insight that I haven’t found in any other channel on RUclips
Thanks, you just turned a light on for me. I am 77 years old and started my jazz journey during covid. I love the standards like Misty in Eb. My frustration is that my playing sounds "clunky" and unconnected and now I know why. It's like if I visited Italy and tried to communicate with the locals using a phrase book without understanding the language. You're right I do play around 6 or 8 tunes but generally can only remember the last couple. Now I fear that it's too late in life for me to reach a standard of fluent playing incorporating some improvisation.
Omg! You always keeps it a honest and real! Everyone with wisdom and knowledge isn't necessarily a good teacher. You are an Excellent teacher! TOP NOTCH!! I appreciate you sir! #respect!
This is great - understand the flow as Barry says be a mover not a hitter. I am incredibly guilty of aiming too high and be dissatisfied. I shall change my approach.
Great video Shan. As a player in the read and remember group, this is very applicable. I find I need to keep refreshing songs I've learned to retain them, otherwise they're gone. I've got a few I'll probably never forget, because I've played them for years, but the new ones I learn don't stick around.
Thank you Shan, you expressed & formalized exactly what we are confusedly feeling when trying to learn Jazz. I will focus more on progressions & degrees! Thanks for the renewed motivation.
HI Shan, I have been learning jazz piano for about 2 years, slowly moving from copying tunes to learning about how music works. I've decided to work my way through your fluency course to see if joining your site is a good fit for me. My first jazz teacher on zoom during restrictions introduced me to Barry Harris videos, which is why I found you. I have already purchased so many resources--books and online subscriptions that would give me about 5 years worth of material, but I just can't seem to stick with any of them for long. It gets super frustrating. This is the third of your videos that I have watched in full now, and I am finding some encouragement again. Thank you.
Hi Jennifer. Welcome! What we do on Jazz Skills is completely different to the books that sit on your shelf and the videos that didn't take you anywhere. Keep in touch if you need me. Shan
I write my charts using numbers both for chords and melody, maybe to a fault as I can call out the numbers way quicker than the actual chord "letters". This has been incredibly useful for me to understand the relationship between the chords and its progression, and the reason why the chord is there. Also very useful when you have to transpose. To me, memorising numeric pattern like 1 6- 4 5 is much easier than memorising F# Ebm B C#.
Great video, could number six (or one of the first five be) to internalize the melody, making sure to recognize it by scale degree? thank you again for a great video!
Thanks so much, Shan. Recently discovered your channel and enjoying your excellent instruction-so very clear and thoughtful! Well done and much appreciated.
Sean, I really want to get you course… I’m an Italian guy living in China, and it’s a bit hard for me to make the payment, because I cannot use PayPal anymore in here, and your website doesn’t accept the Chinese circuit “union pay”… what can I do to make payments? Keep going your great job, you are really good teacher
You don't need to use Paypal. We have a standard credit card payment but those are the only 2 we have. Have you tried both? Get in touch through the site in case we can help.
I'm stepping into the jazz relm and I want to be able to give my students a solid foundation. To that end I really appreciated this video mate keep them coming!
Grandioso 😄.
Hello! I cannot express sufficiently how grateful I am for your teaching & your style! I have watched thousands of videos teaching music but YOU are the only one who has expressed the need of understanding and recognizing what's happening in a song & recognizing it in other songs. Most teachers say "do this then this," etc. I am thrilled abt learning Jazz the correct way. I am the musician for my church, (I read notes & by ear - gospel) but I do the same thing over & over & don't know (actually I can't "hear") what to change. I have some terrible habits as well which is very difficult to stop doing. So I hope to improve. One other thing - I have tried & tried over my many years of playing (even though I have done hand independence exercises accurately) - I CANNOT TALK AND PLAY at the same time - I hate it. Can you help? Take care!
Sounds like you despise many of 'those people'. Joke's on you, I'm fluent in music theory including while playing, and I'm still rubbish at jazz!! I like the last tip though.
Great video🎉 I’d like to know how can I learn jazz piano by my self. I would like to learn with some teacher but it i cant afford this in dollars, its ridiculous expensive, so I have my piano and my determination but I need a guide. Videos like yours really add things in my mindset to be better, thanks
You explained me to the tee. I learn these nice jazz standards but are can only play 2 or 3 but still not understanding what is really going on. I do know the major scales in all 12 keys harmonically because I forced my self to play them daily. Just signed up today. Thanks!
I just got back into piano a couple years ago. I have a good teacher and I also enjoy these videos. I practice certain voicings over and over. Just trying to get familiar with the chord tones and then trying to break out of them in a way that sounds good. I practice the triads of each scale, but not the sevenths regularly and I like how you said to know where you are as you are going up and down. I'm going to integrate that. Any other advice on particular practice exercises? I didn't see anything specific in your playlist selection. New subscriber, thanks!
Hi. I have a question about Misty. Why did you add a VI (six) after the Eflat Major 7 ? You said maybe a six...why is that? What about the six fits in there? i understand it sounds good but what about the chord makes it right? is it just because a common progression is I-VI? what are you trying to achieve when you add the six after Eb major 7 right at the start?
For me, it just provides a bass movement before the Bb. There's no particular progression in play. It shares to many notes with the I that it does'n't change much harmonically but provides a good join.
And notice the flat keys: Eb, Ab and Bb “MAJOR” all correspond to the most popular natural MAJOR keys as well, by moving back a minor 3rd from: Eb, Ab, Bb you you come up with: C, F, G. In my opinion the next most popular key after those previously mentioned would probably be: Db! Then Gb, That covers ALL the flat keys. Then all you’re left with is: D, E, A, B. 🙏
It's not a key change for me as it's a progression to land on a chord in the key. Classical music does similar things but the language is not generally taught until higher levels (if at all).
@@JazzSkills This does keep it interesting as you can use the circle of 5ths and circle of 4ths to take chords from other keys to accomplish this instead of staying in the same boring key. Im a guitar player, but Its quite the same logic.
Hello sir this is great Am a gospel pianist been watching your leisure since this past week and you have bring such a great impact my life I want to say thank you do you have instagram so I can listen to you play live sir
What are the first ten jazz tune you would recommend to a level 2&3 player?

I believe your approach to jazz improvization is the best to be found anywhere.
Thank you so much and I hope that your improv continues to improve and that you enjoy the work.

That's a good point Eric. Keep going back to those older tunes. You'll get there!

Hi Shan. Thanks for posting these tips. They are definitely helpful in keeping us beginners’ feet on the ground when learning jazz. 😎👍

which keys are most used by pianists?
For white scales: C F G, for black scales Eb Ab Bb
@@JazzSkills same for minor tonalities?
