  • Algae growth is the secret to a Sea-Monkey tank's success. In this video I give my 4 best tips for promoting the growth of phytoplankton and give a tutorial on how to do it. I use an Ocean Volcano brine shrimp tank and also talk about why culturing microalgae to feed them separately is beneficial.

    Hatch rate is good, using a heatmat with 24h AC, aerating every day, feeding them the right amount once a week and gets indirect sunlight, is there anything else I can do to keep them alive?

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +4

      Are you using distilled water? In my experience using an airline in the tank makes a huge difference in those first few weeks. One of the greatest enemies for Sea-Monkeys is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a gas which all animals naturally produce but is more important to underwater animals than to land animals. In water, some of the carbon dioxide forms a compound called carbonic acid. This is a very weak acid but it is strong enough to kill Brine Shrimp. If there is too much carbonic acid present in your tank, Sea-Monkeys cannot make use of the oxygen that is available to them. As a result, they suffocate. So for the best results (and as a precautionary measure), put an airline into the tank as soon as the first babies hatch

    i got a 200 gal fish tank with 4 goldfish in it, there was 3 and they had baby, guess they finally got old enough? a month or 2 ago, a little black fish appeared and is growing slowly into a more golden carp, they are currently kinda silvery
    if i ever successfully start a sea monkey or other type of shrimp colony i can literally just scrape a strip of algae off the glass and transplant it like a rug! the 1 time i ever got sea monkeys to even hatch, my mom added salt to the water because she didnt think i did already and oversalted them and they died :(

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад

      Ah that might not work because the algae in a freshwater fish tank may not survive in the salty Sea-Monkey tank. You could always give it a try though!

    Do you know the kind of algae that grows in their little tanks naturally? I have decided to start a algae food source before another attempt at a sea monkey tank. Having this food source ready may give the new tank a better chance. However, I need a culture. You can get some online. I thought it was spirulina, but it doesn’t look at all like what yours looks like. I thought of just making the salt water mixture and throwing in the algae growth food and just…waiting.

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  Год назад +1

      The algae species that grows in the tanks will differ a little for everyone. I’m not sure what species mine is, but my guess is that it’s most likely Nannochloropsis Oculata. Nanno is a great algae as it’s VERY small and easy for the babies & adults to eat. Dunaliella Salina is a great option too

    • @pico-cosmos
