you see i feel for Gail because she only wants to do whats best for her son, and considering for a while David was close to having a break down she wouldnt want to tell him anything to push him over the edge, or start his temper up and she cared enough about him not finding out because of how he would react. I am thinking even though it was kept quiet with the best of intentions that maybe she could have credited David with a bit of sence, and told him the truth.
I see why she didn't, but speaking as a child growing up into adulthood, if your Mother cant be honest about something so real to you and she handles it with sensitivity and tact then i dont think David would have a problem, that is what id want my Mother to do. When parents keep and sit on important issues that you need to know because David wouldnt have got so close to Shona if he knew, and when finding out it is still a betrayal. He has pushed his Mother down the stairs in the past, i think showing her the door and calming down is David growing up
