Books: Mona Lisas by Mary Rose Storey (2:32) Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch (3:29) Death Styles by Joyelle McSweeney (4:59) Skeletons by Deborah Landau (6:34) Natural Burial Ground by Will Burns (7:36) Sharks in the Rivers by Ada Limón (9:32) Catholicism for Dummies by John Trigilio & Kenneth Brighenti (11:11) Films: The Joker dir. Todd Phillips (12:55) The Wicker Man dir. Robin Hardy (14:10) The Holy Mountain dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky (14:59) Alice dir. Jan Švankmajer (16:07) The Capsule dir. Athina Rachel Tsangari (17:15) Friends and Strangers dir. James Vaughan (18:40) Paddington & Paddington 2 dir. Paul King (20:17) Notting Hill dir. Roger Michell (22:24) The Witch dir. Robert Eggers (23:53) also if you haven’t seen it yet Dakota I think you might enjoy House (1977) it’s a horror comedy that’s very weird and surreal and dreamlike
''and he is also a kid, but has enemies... like Hugh Grant'' made me laugh out loud hahah I had also never seen Paddington as a kid and discovering it as an adult was truly wonderful ❤
I actually liked Joker 2! I get why people said the musical aspect was weird but for me it showed the jokers dissociation perfectly. This movie was made against all those people idolizing and loving the joker as a crazy killing machine but forget that there is an actual human beneath it all (struggling with his past & mental illness). It shows us as a society failing to see people for who they are instead of fixating on wrongly portrayed forms of violence (for example also true crime, which many people love but forget the realness of it all in the process). It is against the superhero / villian idolizing fan culture which is exactly why the majority didn’t like it who wanted to see a crazy dude murder some more people for the fun of it.
My recommendation is "The Pashas concubine" by Ivo Andric (1926.), a story about Catholic young women and her life during the delicate period in Bosnia (1878.). Story about catholicism and islam, bosnian Catholic culture, and the position of women, and it's based on historic facts. Many of the characters really existed.
I’m quite certain you will have read Lapvona, from Ottessa Moshfegh, but what do I know? As to folk horror, I think you would love a sickly beautiful film called You Won’t Be Alone, directed by Goran Stolevski. If you don’t like it, then I owe you a Coke.
Nosferatu with a live orchestra sounds so stellar! I got to see a trio of musicians perform the score for Meshes of the Afternoon at a local art exhibit appreciating surrealism earlier this year. That certainly was a surreal event, for other reasons tho
I watched 53 things in October, including _m a n y_ short films, so I'm sticking to listing the standouts and favorites from October. Rewatches: Repulsion, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Coraline, and ParaNorman. First time watches: Coco, Soul, Le Pupille, and The Girl on the Broomstick.
Or maybe you went a little sane this month? Svankmajer's Alice. Absolutely. I used to love watching people at my local public library in small town Alaska take out the Alice DVD for their kids. And they would get the creeps, and their kids loved it. Right now I'm reading Machiavelli's History of Florence (very old copy) as I prepare to spend two weeks there in January. He tells this one story about the Lombard tribes, where Rosamund's father killed by the prince Alboin. He then marries her. To make sure she remians loyal to him, he forces her drink winne from her father's cleaned out skull, which had been turned into a cup. It doesn't go well for hm later. Makes the Game of Thrones seem ready for the Disney channel. Thanks Dakota... from Tbiiisi Georgia. Keep seeking and you will find.
I was sat reading Penpal whilst watching your video 😊 always lovely to see a new video pop up from you!! I love The Wickerman, I think of it as the creepiest musical I've ever seen!! The weirdest Australian film...folk horror film!?! Ive seen has to be Picnic at Hanging Rock, I only really watched it for the scenery, but loved it..... I need to rewatch it!! Paddington 1 & 2 are great films, I'm hoping the 3rd one will be good!!! Im excited for Nosferatu, the original scared me so hoping this does the same!! Have a lovely week!!
I wasn't going to see Joker 2 because the music in the first one bothered me. So many people said it was horrible that it changed my mind! Most people can't possibly be right. Right? But it was in and out of theaters within a couple weeks. ... so I still haven't seen Joker 2
"as a girl who's full of love [the joker] didn't resonate with me as much" REAL
you look like you could actually be a storybook character? literally precious!
i was going to say the same thing.. she looks like a character from the secret history

While I'm SO excited for Nosferatu, there is another remake of it that is definitely worth a watch, directed by Werner Herzog 😊
oh thank god
Fantastic blouse. So perfect on you !
Joyelle McSweeney is great, her novel Flet is a fun read.
Also if you haven't already seen it, Werner Herzog's Nosferatu is amazing as well.
For Australian cinema, have you seen The Last Wave? I remember being blown away by it when I first saw it decades ago.
you need to read ‘Vexations’ by Annelyse Gelman, beautiful, strange, culty and erotic 70pg poem
I will definitely be watching The Capsule
beautiful
Have you watches daisies?
Now that's good parenting right there: suggestions as to which books to read during one's formative years. And look how you turned out Dakota. Hmm☑
❤
Thanks
I love when you address me too
Yes the new joker film is TeRrIbLe !!!
first comment?
If you haven't seen Cries and Whispers, I expect you'll love the look of it.
Girl, your videos are always so good that I can't watch a full video of any other creator, it just doesn't hit the same as you❤️🩹
I wasn't going to see Joker 2 because the music in the first one bothered me. So many people said it was horrible that it changed my mind! Most people can't possibly be right. Right? But it was in and out of theaters within a couple weeks.
... so I still haven't seen Joker 2
Don't watch the joker trust me 🫀
