The tone is spot on. Mikes distorted tone from TB to around 1985 was an incredible, aggressive and beautifully soulful tone. Few other players had this unique voice in their playing.
Thank you and yes that is a great way to describe Mike's lead guitar sound up until Pictures in the Dark. The elegant choice of notes stood out too among the usual sea of blues scale.
I was fifteen or so when I listened for the first time this piece and it completely mesmerised me. And still today. It seems music from another level of reality. Bravo.
Remember walking down to Through Slad and hearing this amazing piece of music part of the Collaborations album on the Boxed set - it was incredible experience!!
Andrew - wow, tell us more! I was 13 and just remember the crazy summer heatwave/drought, I always imagine this being recorded on a very hot. still night, with the windows of the barn wide open...would love to hear some anecdotes
@@PriaboniaMusic HI PriaboniaMusic - I have written a full account of that wonderful summer in 1976 -when i journey to Hergest Ridge and the Beacon then to Through Slad -the story is in the Dark Star magazine -Mike Oldfield s fan club- under the title First Excursion! Hope this helps!
Wonderful. It is just incredible how you've managed to emulate the sound of the guitar. And a very good and felt rendering too. This was Mike non-album at its best. And David Bedford too, of course. In fact, the world is divided between those who appreciate and shiver at this piece and those who don't. Ha! ;-) It has such a haunting atmosphere. Congratulations.
Thank you, Manu, it is flattering to receive your compliment when I am an admirer of your own very inspiring work, particularly enjoy your excellent Tubular Bells 2003 cover, really great. I have updated the video description with more information about the guitar sound, hope it helps.
Extremely brilliant, one hundred congratulations. My favourite work of Oldfield. Every note accurate, rhythm impeccable. Feedback insanely brilliant, only need more overdrive with compressor for much longer sustain of actual note (before feedback) and that will also make it sound more legato, and better with more often just parallel (violinist) vibrato, but it hardly matters as what you achieved in your own way was just incredible.
Amazing guitar playing and the choice to accompany it with piano sounding keyboards instead of church organ sounding keyboards is key to a heightened enjoyment
Thank you. It is direct injected into the DAW and using some digital amp simulation, delay and mild compression. It was two EQs that had the biggest impact boosting the mids and a simulation of tape harmonics helps to give it some warmth.

What do you use to get that tone?

@@matslarsson5988 It is amp and cabinet simulations, starting with Blue Cat's Destructor. I have described it in more detail in the description.
