These people have survived on their own for many generations. They don't need us. Let them have their little paradise in peace.
Its the true garden of eden
I'm genuinely surprised that they're not incredibly inbred.
After the snake, then, since they kill people.
They are protected by law to be left alone. (And it's not Eden, it's earth)
Oh but we need you so much for your wisdom. Thanks
They aren't bothering anyone and have made it abundantly clear that they want to be left alone.
I don't understand why there would need to be a debate on how the situation should be handled. Oblige their request to be left alone.
'Merica, were usually the equivalent of a kid poking a coiled up snake with a stick. And when strikes back we get upset. I guess we got this from Papa Britain. Just leave others the F**k alone.
They dont known whats good for them
@@hatkid3093 Ones who lack that knowledge even more are the looney tunes who think as you wrote (I think it's sarcasm) and decide to go there.
If there was oil there, the US would have colonised them by now. We need to just leave them alone, and drop an iPad on the island just for shits and giggles lol
Totally agree. I agree with keep watch but keep away.
They take "GET OFF MY LAWN!" to a whole new level
Iconic honestly
Possibly descended from Yorkshire farmers?
“Git orrrf moi laaand”
More like -get off my beach! 🏖️ ya germ ridden raiders!
They have extremely good reasons for wanting nothing to do with foreigners. The laws to protect them and their island are not there for fun. FAFO.
I would say it is more a "MAKE SENTINEL GREAT AGAIN"- policy......
Indian here, Andaman Islands chain has enough naval presence, in other islands. There's a large scale tourism as well, especially near Port Blair and Neil & Ross Islands, with fantastic resorts and 5 star hotels. You can look it up. Radhanagar beach in Andamans is ranked regularly in the best beaches of the world, by Lonely planet & Time Magazine etc. But we the people and government have decided to leave this one island alone , because we know that the Sentinalese do not have any immunity of modern diseases. And any modern human presence there would lead to immediate annihilation of their people caused by Flu , or Small Pox etc.
You are undoubtedly correct about the viral threat to the Sentinelese, though not through smallpox. According to the World Health Organization, that disease has been eradicated in the world; the only known human disease to have done so. Smallpox now only exists on laboratory shelves.
People older than 50 years are the last generation to have been vaccinated against that disease, so if there ever is a *real* "Wuhan," only some older parents and grandparents will have an immunity to it.
I remember the huge push to vaccinate us, all the children in the country and I was one of them. We were vaccinated in school. We all lined up in the gym and got the vaccine via a 4-pronged stamp that we all got in our upper arms. Those vaccines have caused a starburst pattern scars on those of us to have very large scars that last for the rest of one's life. Some have more serious scars than others; it's always in the deltoid muscle of one of the upper arms.
History has already proven otherwise, though.
I think that is the best way. Try to minimise contact with them as much as possible. Both for the high risk of infections but also because it will destroy their culture. As scientists in a situation like this we cannot measure or even observe without altering and changing what we want to study.
And I'm sure they don't call themselves Sentinalese.
@@Maliceah obv.
If you lived on your own little island and your family and neighbors got sick and possibly died any time people came, yeah I don't think you'd trust outsiders either.
IF all the existence you can remember you've been like "Outsiders? FCK tho ppl! All they do is send garbage onto our beaches, ruining them"
...and that'd be understandable

That was my thought. The first time, "Maybe these guys were dicks and others will be nice?" A couple visits later, "Nope! Fuck all of those outsiders! They visit, and suddenly, we have sickness and death that's never happened to us. No more of this shit!"
I have aggressively swallowed up every scrap of information available on the Sentalese and I find them fascinating. They are as close to a snap shot of a thousand plus years ago as we have. Also I give all accolades to the Indian government for their ",hands off policy" in a world where we all too often destroy such things even through good intentions.
Don't you mean 10,000 years ago? A thousand years ago was the Middle Ages where the Holy Roman Empire was the most powerful state, paper money was invented, cathedrals and castles were lived in, and the Islamic caliphates were experiencing their Golden Age.
Theyre a bunch of tribal cannibals. What's interesting?
That's one way to see it.
Another is that these are people who have been surviving as long as we all have, evolving as long as we all have, and yet they've made due with the technology they wield.
They're not just a snapshot of neolithic life, they're also just as culturally developed and involved as any other human. What we miss out on in insight by closely studying them we gain by their purity. They're an example of indigenous life that was never colonized. Where else?
It's interesting to think, though, that if one surveyor managed to find phosphate rock or some other mineral asset, things would have gone much differently for these people. They've done right by fragging every dude that comes ashore.
Australian aboriginals are more primitive and it's a closely guarded secret by the Australian govt.
If im correct these are the people that dismantled a ship that had landed and the next time they were observed they had metal tipped weapons and make shift metal gear. Im not sure if that was an uncontacted in the amazon im thinking of but honestly one of the best ways we could help these people is dropping a few supply drops of different types of metals so they can retain the same lifestyle but have more lethality for personal/protective purposes. One could also argue the best way to help would be to not think about how to help but to just appreciate and respect the existence of them in their current state.
Missionaries, man. Can’t stop bothering people.
Yeah, religious freedom - as long as its their religion and their freedom to try to force it on the rest of us.
I have a friend that has gone on a few missionary trips, I'm pagan BTW. I asked her what they did when they went. She said they sang them songs. I was confused. They spent all that money for flights, hotels and food to sing to orphans in orphanages. Wouldn't it have been better to send them the money they spent on the trip? They could've used that for things they needed. But I guess they wouldn't have that nice trip.
@@willowthistle3648 you're totally right but they live in a delusion
The money used on all the trips to go there and "help" locals is literally better used to give resources so the locals and become more self sufficient
@@willowthistle3648Their objective isn't to help people, it's to save souls.

You can guarantee that the "leave them alone" policy wouldnt apply if (a) this island was a good naval base, or (b) oil/minerals were discovered there
There are naval bases on surrounding islands..
It is actually a good location for a naval base, but the Indian government is not taking it over until there is a threat in that area..
They would have already taken over it if the island was near the other side at lakshdweep as there is a foe Pakistan
Does it have oil? I can hear the songs of my people loading up on warships if it does.

Exactly, he knew he wasn’t welcome.
And who else would be more deserving than a damned missionary, right? Set out to ruin their culture with religious horse shit, ended up getting what he deserved. No sympathy.
if you haven't seen it, there's a documentary on the missionary guy by National Geographic (so I think its on Disney +) that was really good. really shows how both obsessed and insanely naïve he was.
There's a really good documentary about the missionary who tried to visit the island and his death. His father doesn't blame the North Sentinelese in the slightest. Which is a long winded way of saying, everyone who has a choice and knows the options does in fact seem to prefer living with modern medicine and electricity over wondering where their next meal is coming from, and watching their parents die young, their wives die in childbirth, and most their children die before adulthood.
@@matthewfarrell1763 how arrogant of you. Those people are perfectly fine without our “modern medicine.” They are not stupid like you’re insinuating them to be because they don’t know these things “exist.” They might not be aware to what extent how the modern world differs from their traditional world, but I’m sure they’ve realized from the few interactions that they’ve had with us they realize we have certain things that might be beneficial based on the gifts they’ve received. Yet, they have decided the harm of integrating into our culture is far more harmful than simply hunting for their food. And I agree with them. Sure, we might have modern medicine, but we also have war/abuse/racism/classism/sexism/r@pe/global warming/homelessness/@ids etc. The list goes on.
Our modern world isn’t as great as you think it is. They are happy with the food that they have and their natural medicines. They do not want to be like us. It’s pretty simple to comprehend 🙄

What’s remarkable is that there are fewer inhabitants on the island than the number of channels Simon has.

There are many hunter-gatherer isolated tribes in the Amazonian rainforest that have never made contact with the outside world, these are groups of a few hundred people, some may not even reach 100. Many of these isolated groups could have been wiped out by illegal miners and loggers over the decades, and we would never know.
Probably still happening
The Sentinelese have made it abundantly clear they don’t want anything to do with outsiders. I’m curious too, but we need to leave them alone.

The Sentinelese have told us, repeatedly, to leave them alone. The modern world could force it's way in and subjugate the islanders, but it hasn't. That's the best way to eventually earn their trust, but not forcing contact. Since their society is obviously constantly evolving, perhaps they will get to a point where they want to learn about the rest of the world.
They’ve had hundreds of years to try to explore the constantly changing world and they’ve made it more than clear they have no interest in such changes. Just pretend they literally do not exist.
Their society is not 'constantly evolving' at all. They've been there 50 000 years. They're hard-stuck stone age, like all blacks.
Not sure they have evolved much if they don't know how to make paddles or create fire tbh lol
@@poip202 youre just using our known baseline as the standard for evolution. they have evolved at a pace that suits their environment
Exactly - they are well aware that there are other humans out there, living a different way to them. If and when they want to make contact, the door will be open.
The Sentinelese are basically me when anyone rings my doorbell. If you’re on my porch and you don’t have a pizza you can buzz right off
May they never run out of arrows.
Imagine if the developed world destroys itself in some nuclear war and these people had no idea about it. Crazy to think about
They are happy and in no danger other than from outsiders, so leave them alone. I don't know who got the idea in their head that we as a society have the right to conquer, control and understand everything on this planet. We don't, especially if by doing so causes much more harm than good.
One of the most profound things Anthropologists always say is to leave them alone if they want to left alone ! The Sentinelese actually accepted contact sometime in the 90s but I think that contact led to some people falling sick or dying. And they suddenly turned hostile again in the early 90s, after about 12 contacts. Since we don’t speak their language we don’t know what exactly may have happened. But then, they have been perfectly happy and have lived on those islands for 60000 years. They don’t need us.
This situation is a perfect example of the need for a Prime Directive to forbid cultural contamination and a general quarantine to protect the uncontacted from outside disease.
I love this new channel!
Leave them alone guys they’ve been pretty clear on that one. we’ve got to get it right once in history
This was a very informative video. Thank you.
This was a very informative video, well done.
Indent this story, very fascinating that this civilization has been able to stave off modern society and people from interacting with them by making sure anyone who sets foot on the island doesn’t live to tell the tale.
Of course there are other isolated tribes in the Amazon that have also resisted and killed anyone who intrudes into their territory, but they are not as well known because of how difficult it is to get to them.
This is not a civilization. This is a primitive society. Civilizations have characteristics like agriculture, monetary systems, writing systems and educational institutions. All civilizations are societies but not all societies are civilizations.
It took 300 years, repeated wars, acts of aggression and violence and poor to no contact. It took only 1 woman with familiarity of local languages and gifts of food to make contact with the Sentinelese😂
That's awesome!🎉
Their land, their way of life, who are we to determine otherwise?

Absolutely hands-off approach in my opinion. Let them be, they obviously don't need us and don't want us on their island. And don't even get me started on the idea of bringing our beliefs and religions to them....
Hands off...people can be too curious for their own good. They clearly don't want to be bothered.
Hands off, if it isn't broke don't fix it. They aren't asking for help. They have their best life style. They don't need our problems introduced to them.
Honestly the only reason I see to establish a decent relation with them instead of leaving them alone is the fact that people keep accidentally ending up there. It’s within everyone’s best interest if we can communicate enough to say “we’re not here to hurt you, we’re just stuck until someone comes and gets us”. Other than that we really ought to let them be.

Simon doesn’t work for Geographics anymore (turns out he didn’t own it even tho like everyone thought he did lol) so this is his equivalent which he owns now instead (don’t know about the ownership of his many other channels but i’d assume he owns at least some of them too)
I feel like the Prime Directive should apply here. these people do not want us there, us going there will cause them great harm even with the best intentions. There is no reason why we should push our cultures and values on them. There is not even an argument about resources or strategic value, the island as said is worthless. This is actually a proving ground for the future of space travel. all of these things will be important considering factors if we actually find intelegent life especially if that life is less socially and technologically developed.
Yes, although we should definitely get some cameras and recording devices onto the island. Sanitize them and sneak in at night to put them up. Studying them in that way would be unprecedented, since every other tribe has been studied by a human interacting with them. Being able to observe them and decode the language without interaction would be pretty revolutionary
@@pauld.b7129jesus christ, they’re people not animals in a blue planet documentary. Doubt you would like it if someone hid cameras in your house to watch you without your knowledge
@@pauld.b7129isn’t this why we have drones?
I think it’s a lot more likely we may encounter life that is more advanced than we are, in which case, we had better hope they are more developped in terms of empathy and ethics, in addition to tech. If not, we are gonna be so fucked
@@pauld.b7129this has to be satire. You really don’t see them as people huh?
Leave those people alone. Living their best lives out there in paradise, they don't need no one.
I got to sail right past north sentinel on a surf trip to the Andaman islands. I saw smoke from their fires rising.
We should let them be as they want as long as they don't harm people outside of their realm. The existence of this tribe is fascinating!
