Yosemite is a vast area. Full of animals that will pick clean and scatter any remains or clothes left. Also, there are many areas that aren't visited often. Easy to go undiscovered.
I think its electromagnetic anomalies. Granite mountains next to raging rivers, then add atmospheric disturbances, and you have the makings of a portal. I HAVE seen them as a child in the 50’s, 60’s, and early 70’s. I never saw any cryptids, witches’ covens, UFO’s, or bizarre phenomena. The closest would be to a feeling that a few residents of the cliff dwellings’ spirits were present, not in a malevolent way, but as just keeping an eye out that the tourists realized real people had lived there and they should show proper respect. Some of them were children and I wished they could come back for a day of fun.

When you see it glide over head with long, slow flaps, I can see it being mistaken for something else, for a moment anyway.
