This video really underscores the fact that I have become an old man! I started my karate journey in 1963 in southern California in LA at the California Karate Association dojo shared by Tsutomu Oshima and Hidetaka Nishiyama. I was obsessed with karate; I was 15 years old. I trained/practiced evenings in the dojo; when there was no class in the dojo, I practiced in the asphalted parking lot behind the apartment where I lived with my mother and siblings. On Saturdays, I rode the public transportation buses from the San Fernando Valley to downtown LA to the main dojo and practiced with the others who had shown up to practice. No classes were ever scheduled; it was just free practice. I loved it. I finally was awarded shodan at the fall 1965 dan grading, a special occasion because Masatoshi Nakayama happened to be visiting then, so the exam was co-proctored by the two senseis, Nishiyama and Nakayama. The results weren’t posted until the following week, but I passed.

Or maybe people should get it when they are ready, not an arbitrary amount of time/money spent.

mmmm things have changed ... took mine in 70s under enoeda sensei ... it was a CLOSED grading no cameras .. no rest breaks & from what i can see very much harder .. i saw canidates fail just for not bowing correctly.. this would have been classed as 4th kyu back then... out of 200 candidates ...12 passed back then including nidans .. like i say things change.. not always for the best tho ..oss

I would concur as I did 3 to 1 kyu & Shodan in 1990-92 & the gradings were tougher as I had an orthodox Japanese sensei where training was not half-hearted, it was for real & tough, doing Ippon or Jyu Kumite with him always left me bruised.
And when training with M. Tanaka of the JKA, a genuine hard-ass where training was also beyond tough, after one weekend session, I could barely walk for about a week.
Both sensei's believed Karate was not a game & their teaching reflected that

Bassai was average, going forward, apply your tanden when necessary as your center barely moved. Also imagine you are in a real fight & do the kata like that.
Going forward, work on your kumite as here it was also just getting by, as you progress in the future, you will run into senior karateka who trained in the old days when it was way tougher than displayed here.
My grading report would be average technique & no spirit.
